Helsinki Zoo Korkeasaari Zoo, Helsinki

Korkeasaari has for the first time in Finland managed to help a Northern Gennet found from the nature.

The bird was set back to nature at last friday. Giving it a second chance.

Unfortunately this second chance did not last long as the bird got eaten by a white-tailed eagle.
Still the gennet gave more experience and knowledge to help them in furure.

Yesterday evening male snow leopard Lux was sent to Ähtäri zoo to join tehot female snow leopard Juma, in hopes of producing some breeding results in the future. This actually leaves Korkeasaari with out any snow leopards at the moment, but I hope they can acquire another individual at some point.

I did not know that the Korkeasaari Zoo that for decades has operated the Snow leopard ISB and European breeding program is without its iconic species. Any indication they are working on it???

I don’t know if there’s any plans to re-acquire this iconic species, but maybe you could ask @aeemeli as he might have some more insight on the matter.

Does someone know where and when Lux was born? In Atharai is a female, I read in the Instagram post. Is this Yuma born in 2017 in Krefeld?

Lux was born in Mulhouse zoo in 2017 (but Lux wasn't his name there, I can't remember the original name that was given to him at birth), his father was actually born in Korkeasaari and moved to Mulhouse in 2016.

The species will be making a comeback very soon after the enclosure has been renovated a bit, but can't tell the details yet ;)

I understood that Lux will eventually return to Korkeasaari and he is only borrowed to Ähtäri temporarily.
Am I completely wrong?
I understood this was about Snow Leopards, in the end ... but it took a while to get it (by back tracking the thread).

It would help sometimes to yet include the species when chatting about individual names of animals. It will improve reading the. thread as not everyone is in the know who is who.

Nope, he will stay in Ähtäri if everything goes well. It is not common for zoo animals to move temporarily for breeding purposes - though sometimes it can happen (for example Tallinn Zoo's Amur tiger Pootsman that is now in Ljubljana to breed, and will return to Tallinn after they finish their new tiger enclosure).

A 10 year old male Asiatic lion has arrived at Korkeasaari, probably sometime last week. He comes from a Spanish zoo, though the exact zoo isn’t specified. It’s been a while since there’s been a male lion at the zoo and I’m excited to see one finally return!

In Korkeasaari press release at their pages they also said that he was born in Budapest zoo.

His fathers father used to live in Korkeasaari. He has no previous offsprings so it would be amazing to have cubs from him!

Are the tiger cubs still at the zoo and are they all visible at the same time? (mother and cubs still together? at what time of day are we most likely to see them, also if they are maybe alternating their outdoor time with the father)
And exploring the option of taking the ferry to the zoo, from the market square, looks like it should be running in june. Can you park your car at the ferry dock?

The cubs (that are already almost adult-sized) are still at the zoo, and visible most times. They alternate enclosures with the father, but all are visible as the zoo has two tiger enclosures. Father Tamur is usually in the first enclosure when you enter Cat Valley, mom Sibiri and the cubs in the next one (and ofter also they have access to the tiger bridge and another enclosure on the opposite side).
There's very limited parking space near the dock, plus as it's in city center the parking there is super expensive. If you visit by car, maybe the best option is to drive to Mustikkamaa and enter the zoo via bridge.
