ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval news 2024

The official inauguration ceremony of the Panda sculpture (that represents YUAN MENG, the first Panda to be born in Beauval and in France) ordered by Beauval to the sculptor Michel BASSOMPIERRE is scheduled on Mar. 22nd 2024.

Beauval has also recorded its first births of Scorpions, without more precision about the species (maybe Pandinus imperator).
There's a short news story about this event.
Quand les pullus pullulent ! - Beauval Actus

Arrival of new species : Black-necked Swans in the former Flamingo lake, and Rhinoceros Ratsnakes (Gonyosoma boulengeri ?) in the main Vivarium.
2 Steppe Eagles have been transferred in the former Fishing Cat enclosure (this species is already present for many years in the Bird Show).
(reported by JoJo on Howtank forum/chat)

Two other new bird species (reported by Anthony and Antoine on Howtank forum/chat) : Ruddy Shelduck (at least 1 individual in the former Flamingo lake) and Ochre-marked Parakeets (at least 2 individuals in the Sloth enclosure).

I was in Beauval yesterday, many news may be worth to notice, among them :
  • a new reptile species, the Mangrove Monitor Varanus indicus, is present in the main reptile house ;
  • in the same place there's 1 Common Collared Lizard Crotaphytus collaris in the Chuckwalla and Beaded Lizard exhibit. The species is back on show after several years of absence ;
  • the new small primate enclosure near the Orangutan island is nearly finished ;
  • the medium-sized aquarium in the Australian House is now filled with water (but without any fish for now) ;
  • there seems to have been a second Douc Langur birth, but unfortunately stillborn (there is some signage placed about this) ; meanwhile the first baby looks still healthy (I managed to see it) ;
  • there are at least 2 Ruddy Shelducks in the former Flamingo lake ;
  • I've seen at least 1 Ruff in free-flight in the Bird House ;
  • there was a pair of Red-legged Seriemas in the row of aviaries behind the Bird Nursery ;
  • 0.1 Lesser Kudu is born on Feb. 27th 2024.

Many other births reported between mid-February and mid-March in Beauval : 15 Phantasmal Poison Frogs Epipedobates tricolor, 1.1 Patagonian Maras, 2 Sitatungas, 1 Giant Asian Pond Turtle, 1 Bearded Vulture, 1 Somali Wild Ass and 1 Chital.
The (living) baby Douc is son/daughter of the female MAÏ LY.

The South American Coatis have finally been removed from the South American aviary and placed off-show, because they began to be aggressive against waterfowl and other birds.
It's unclear if, when and where they will be back on show.

Some other news from Beauval :

- the newly hatched Bearded Vulture chick (who hatched on Feb. 20th 2024) will be transferred to Goldau Zoo (Switzerland) when fledged, then eventually rewilded in the Swiss Alps.
Très belle nouvelle au ZooParc : naissance d’un poussin gypaète barbu ! - Beauval Actus

- the female White Tiger ASHA has been placed in backstage, as she didn't do well with the other female (the younger SUSHI, born in Beauval in 2018) who shared her former enclosure.

The young female Caribbean Manatee UNAÏ has just been transferred to the Parc zoologique de Paris.
© MNHN - S. Pagani #ZooDeParis #lamantin #manatee #manatees #manateeappreciationday @eaza_official"

Due to intense rains last night, the lowest part of the zoo (around the primate islands) has been flooded.
Nonetheless the zoo has been opened at 10:30 AM, except this part that has remained closed (the water levels are decreasing since this morning).
No animal death nor injury has been reported, as the primate pavilions and other night shelters are above the water levels.

I only saw 1.1 + 2 Youngs of different ages
In late March I've seen 4 adult or teenage animals, plus the living baby.
As there has been 2 births (including one unsuccessful) within a few days, there must be 2 adult females.

I thought they had had several births, have they lost some of them?
Yes they had mixed success with this species, with stillborns and 2 juvenile deaths (at least one of them was caused by a falling, if not both). One juvenile has survived till now (a young male born in early 2021) and is still present in Beauval, plus the infant. I hope they will survive till they reach the adult age and eventually breed (that implies imports, probably from Asia).

Thankyou. It sounds very similar to what happened to previous other groups in Europe. They bred but there's considerable mortality too, the group survives a while but doesn't expand much then they gradually die off.

According to "Antoine" from the Howtank forum/chat platform, there are interesting news from Beauval : the birth of a Red River Hog, new Alpagas in the petting farm and new signage about Binturongs (probably the arrival of the animals too) in front of the former Coati exhibit.

The official arrival of the Binturong pair (HUBERT and SHELLY) has been officially announced !
Une nouvelle espèce au ZooParc ! - Beauval Actus

I was in Beauval last Sunday and I've noticed many news :
  • there were at least 2 Asian Small-clawed Otters in the Binturong enclosure, so this exhibit will host both species (I was able to get a glance on the Binturongs too, but I saw only furry shadows in their night quarters) ;
  • there's a new reptile species in the main vivarium, the New Caledonian Giant Gecko Rhacodactylus leachianus ;
  • the White-naped Pheasant Pigeon signage has been removed in front of the Oceanian aviary, I hadn't the time to see the birds in this aviary ;
  • there were Red Shovelers Spatula platalea in the Duck River near the historical entrance ;
  • the primate aviary near the Orang-Utan island is now completed, it hosts White-faced Sakis and Golden-handed Tamarins ;
  • the "new" lizard in the North American desert terrarium isn't actually a Collared Lizard as I stated but a Rough-scaled Lizard Sceloporus serrifer (this species was also displayed in Beauval in the past) ;
  • a minor change in the vivarium : the Green Python is now in a terrarium that hosted Amazon Tree Boa in the recent past (and much more species before).
