Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildife Park news 2024

Nice Gelada hill but I guess they will pick it clean again in a short time once they have access. Gelada are the worst of the baboons for this as they are natural grass/grain feeders. Do you know the approx size of their group?
Yes they will certainly destroy it again! But gives them something to do on the way.

There are two groups with two breeding males. There were 15 when this article was written at the end of 2022 but they’ve had more youngsters since then.

The first ever Gelada Monkey baby has been born at award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park

They are super active when both groups are out and both males were still there when I visited before Xmas (so unless someone can correct me I’m assuming both groups are intact) though only a couple of the group were out in the rain yesterday.

Hope that turf grows out a bit. Looks like a lawn and I suspect it won't last long!

Well they haven’t got mucb choice but to turf it, seeding it wouldn’t last even as long as that! They’ll enjoy pulling it up by the roots and throwing it at each other (great fun watching them do that). One of the younger ones had managed to get a bit of a new plant through the temporary fence yesterday and was hurling it at the others and they were playing chase for it.

Geladas do make a great display with the long-coated males and all that funny grunting they do as contact- calling, the lip-flapping etc. I really enjoy them. Its a bit unfortunate they are so hard on their enclosures, they strip them in a way few other primate species do- even other baboon species( or should I just say 'baboon species', not other as they aren't really baboons I believe.)

Confirmation from YWP Facebook

Two of our female Painted Dogs have officially joined the Zoo de La Palmyre family, following a recommendation from the European Breeding ProgrammeWe’re thrilled to hear that they're settling in well to their new home, where they have joined two 7-year-old males, forming a breeding group

❤️We still have 3 Painted Dogs in our woodland trail area!

According to one of the "fans of" Faceboook pages - the 2 female polar bears (Flocke and Tala) have been moved. No confirmation of where they are going to yet. Rumours also abound that the anticipated Ukrainian rescue lions have arrived as Lion Country has been closed all day....

Update to the rumour above - now confirmed the Ukranian lions have arrived

Well at least the article mentions that they were rescued from a war zone and moved to Poznan in Poland, so the Yorkshire staff were never at risk of being killed unlike the brave Polish and Ukrainian Keepers that moved them in the first place, but I suppose its good pr for ywp to claim rescuing them from Ukraine

Can you link the articles / features where they claimed to have rescued them directly from Ukraine and where YWP Staff were in danger of being killed? I've only read ones that mention / credit the fact the zoo rescued them in Poland, entirely done by the Polish team before being taken subsequently by YWP, so good to see examples of these other misleading ones.

I have criticised YWP a bit in the past, but referring to the rehoming of these lions as a PR stunt feels really harsh to me. So what if they milk it for publicity - they've done a good deed, they've given some animals a better life than they would have had otherwise, and it keeps a popular species at the park. I think its fantastic and deserves massive credit!

Have you seen anything that says that they rescued them from Poland, everything that I've seen says rescued from Ukraine and then hidden in the small print it says that they came from Poland, its hiding the true facts yet again just like they did with the Japanese bears and the Romanian lions, which could have stayed where they came from, but neither of those options gave ywp publicity for free.
