Mr Gharial's species research

I think GreatArgus is referring to the fact that most fish (And many, if not most of the other) species in captivity are raised/kept in the same way octopus are. It is much easier to source them from the wild than raise them in captivity.
That doesn't work when literally the only reason the majority of those species listed continue to be present due to collection from the wild.

Oh yeah, it's absolutely me being big stupid. I was just explaining my thought process. This list is based on what animals are available in zoos so I compare it to Zootierliste to see how many zoos have this species, completely forgetting that said zoos are also getting their animals from the wild. Octopuses and eels were the only animals that I knew for certain are being taken from the wild (but it's beneficial for the eels so it doesn't count)

As I mentioned before, I'm only working with the information that I have and it'll lack some nuance

This list is based on what animals are available in zoos so I compare it to Zootierliste to see how many zoos have this species,

I would like to note that ZTL is likely not an effective source for smaller fishes - I've widely heard it is quite inaccurate for fish in general. A wide range of species are available through wholesalers and the private trade but are rare or overlooked in zoos, yet readily obtainable. If one zoo has the species it can be considered obtainable for most species (exceptions being things like molas). Same is true for aquatic invertebrates.

Octopuses and eels were the only animals that I knew for certain are being taken from the wild (but it's beneficial for the eels so it doesn't count)

The vast majority of marine fish and invertebrates will all be wild caught, with some exceptions. Some of the freshwater fish as well, such as some catfishes, knifefishes, the reedfish, and other oddballs. Quite a number of freshwater species are still significantly exported as wild stock even if there are captive bred ones.
The sea turtles too are rehabs or youngsters being headstarted.

As I mentioned before, I'm only working with the information that I have and it'll lack some nuance

Rather, you've nuanced it considerably - it's based on European collections only, you've excluded entire species groups based on personal opinions, and you're basing the list nearly exclusively off of the presumed accuracy of a single website, with a bit of ZC and your personal experience thrown in.
That said, any such list will have some nuances depending on creator's region and knowledge, and for the most part you're doing it the most effective way possible for Europe. However, I can't say I agree with excluding whole groups (especially prominent ones like octopi) simply off personal opinion when the purpose of the thread is to showcase what is available.

Some marine fish are bred in captivity (clownfishes, seahorses, cardinalfishes, damselfishes...), a few zoos like Océanopolis manage the breeding of many other marine fish species (various examples on this thread).
I know at least one collection (Marineland d'Antibes, in Southern France) that managed the breeding of Loggerhead turtles, there may be other places abroad.

Well you're always free to make your own "species research" thread

I could, but I am not interested in doing so. As one currently working on a speculative project, there is far more to be gained by digging into your own research instead of picking random species off a list someone creates. Looking into populations and ranges can be extremely interesting, seeing how things have changed over time. It also allows for the whole picture to be seen, instead of being partially limited by the list creator's potential biases. A list can be a starting point, but there's something to be said for doing one's own work.

An increasing number of species are, but in general public aquariums are late to the game. The increased interest comes in recent years to provide better sustainability.

a few zoos like Océanopolis manage the breeding of many other marine fish species (various examples on this thread).

Indeed, and it is good to see they are actively making good progress, even if all the species mentioned on the thread there are old news as far as marine fish breeding is concerned.

I know at least one collection (Marineland d'Antibes, in Southern France) that managed the breeding of Loggerhead turtles, there may be other places abroad.

It can be done, but is generally not by zoos and aquariums as there are typically plenty of rehab turtles to go around.

Anyway, I'll bow out of the thread for now and leave you to it.

Alright. I'm now very close to finishing "phase 1", with only the frogs and toads to go.

Phase 2 will be the fish. There are a huge amount of fish available in captivity that will take quite a while to sort through. And since there is no real separation between freshwater and marine species, I can't take any shortcuts this time around.

Phase 3 will be invertebrates. Again, these are the most difficult to research and I can't do it from home. I've already visited a few large-scale pet shops to take note of their invertebrate collections. Phase 3 will take a LOT longer than the first two, as I have to go there physically and take notes.

This will also mean that there will be more species "discovered" that should've been included in phase 1 and 2. With fish, reptiles and amphibians that either aren't listed or don't have enough holders on ZTL for me to include, but are present readily in the pet trade. The Siamese fighting fish, for example, doesn't have enough holders for me to include according to Zootierliste, but they're extremely common in the pet trade and should be included, of course.

So, please, if you have invertebrate pets, live near a pet shop or happen to be going to a large pet shop or expo (preferably ones in Europe, since that's what the rest of the thread is based off), OR, of course, see invertebrate species in a zoo during your visit, PLEASE take notes and send a private message so I can put them on the list for phase 3. This should hopefully make phase 3 much more accurate and include more species.

Another way that you can help: If you happen to know of a species that is rare in captivity, but you see them in very large numbers in that one zoo that does them, send me a PM. A lot of ZTL listings don't include how many individual animals a zoo has of that species, and that's why they aren't being included. For example, if the Thicklip grey mullet was rare in zoos (it isn't, so this is kind of a bad example), I may not have included it, if it wasn't for my recent visit to Ecomare where they have well over 100 of these guys.

After that, there will be small additions every now and then, as more species come to light either by me visiting more zoos or paying closer attention to unsigned species, or by you guys sending PMs with more species or animals that I wrongfully didn't include.

I'll get back to you pretty soon with our first lists for North America

Species list Northern Eurasia:
Eight regions:
Europe regions.png
1: Central Europe
2: Iberia
3: Southern Europe
4: Alps and Pyrenees
5: The Balkans
6: Scandinavia
7: Eastern Europe
8: Siberia

Northern Eurasia will be the first region to also include the "region-wide" system. For the Americas I decided to put them into the others because there weren't that many animals to divide over the regions. I should warn: Animals that occur "region-wide" don't always occur in all areas, just in the majority.

Example: The Stone marten does not occur in Siberia or Scandinavia, but it still occurs in 6 out of 8 regions, so I included it in the "Region-wide" list.
Stone marten map.png
Similarly, the West European hedgehog does not occur in the Balkans or Siberia, etc. Most of the animals included here do occur everywhere though. Still, take caution and double-check distributions before including it in a specific area.

* = Heck cattle, Heck horse, European mouflon, and the Scottish highland are all technically domesticated animals. But occur as wild animals in areas of Europe.
* The Heck cattle and Heck horse are reconstructions of the extinct Aurochs and Tarpan, the wild cattle and wild horse that used to roam Europe.
* The Scottish highland is a domesticated cattle breed that occurs in wildlife reserves in the Netherlands. Multiple zoos showcase these animals as Dutch wildlife.
* The European mouflon is technically a subspecies of the Domesticated sheep (Ovis Aries), which originated from the Mouflon (Ovis orientalis), which occurs in West Asia. However, the European mouflon (Ovis aries musimon) now occurs in large areas of Europe as wildlife, including multiple Dutch wildlife reserves.

** = The Ring-necked pheasant originally occurs in Asia, but has naturalized in Europe.

*** = These animals occur here on a technicality, as Iceland is included in central Europe

Welp, there's a horrible horrible glitch in my powerpoint that means my Autosave hasn't been working properly. I don't know when these issues started so I don't know how far back I have to go...
I've sent an issue report to microsoft so hopefully this will be resolved soon.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to scream into the void for a while

What source(s) did you use to designated these seven regions, or what did you based the separations of these regions on?

I'm considering a South American mega speculative zoo project as a final mega project to close out this part of the hobby for myself, and I think your lists and regions could come in quite handy, if I can use them.

I'm considering a South American mega speculative zoo project as a final mega project to close out this part of the hobby for myself, and I think your lists and regions could come in quite handy, if I can use them.

It's based on a mix of things.

The Amazon/Guianan highland, West Coast//Andes, and the Tierra del Fuego/Falklands are all pretty self-explanatory. These are clearly separate biomes, which is mirrored by a lot of the inhabitant's distribution maps (for example, the Magellanic steamerduck, the Inca tern or the
Spangled cotinga).

The Northern Andes are separated from the Andes and the Amazon. As it's much more humid and forested than the rest of the Andes. But separated from the rest of the Amazon by the mountains, which can be seen in a lot of the distribution maps.

The Gran Chaco/Pampas/Patagonia, the Pantanal and the Caatinga/Cerrado/Mata Atlantica together are the combined grasslands of South America, but I've taken them separately. The three Northern grasslands are the highlands, and the three Southern grasslands are in the lowlands. There is quite some overlap in terms of animal distribution, but also some separations. I've mostly separated them because zoos tend to only focus on the Southern grasslands.
I've also separated the Pantanal because it's a very small but interesting biome that also has a lot of overlap between the other biomes, but is usually taken separately by zoo designers.
Note: The Mata Atlantica is also definitely separate from the rest of the grasslands, but the lion tamarins are really the only animals that occur here exclusively.

Alright then, I took a quick break on this project to work on some zoo design. Now I'm refreshed and ready to continue. It appears the issue has been fixed now.

One small issue though. I recently (re)discovered a website that has better distribution maps for reptiles, since the IUCN website doesn't list a lot of them (especially turtles). And now I've also realised quite a few turtles are listed in the wrong region. Now, luckily this mostly applies to Sub-saharan Africa and Asia, so we haven't seen most of them. But I'm still going to re-do them.

If I notice any mistakes in the species lists already posted, I'll make a post with corrections.

I also have to restart the fish list, which is extremely annoying since I was well over halfway and there's just... so... many...

Anyways, turtle corrections coming soon, and after that we'll continue the lists for the continents.

Sub-Saharan Africa coming soon

Species list Sub-Saharan Africa:
Ten regions:
Sub-Saharan Africa regions.png

Africa once again includes a region-wide list. Just like in Northern Eurasia, this does not automatically mean they occur in all regions, just in the large majority of them. Madagascar and the islands are not included in the region-wide list, so animals like the African spoonbill and Hamerkop are included in Madagascar and the Region-wide list.

Also: a new region type only included in Africa are the combined grasslands. This is a smaller version of the region-wide list, this time being composed of North Africa, the Ethiopian highland, East Africa and Upper South Africa, which is a common distribution that you can see in, for example, the African bush elephant, Hooded vulture and Spotted hyena.
