Asian Small-clawed Otter Update

Squid has arrived from Gorge via Melbourne Zoo. Her intended mate is Saati, who’s recently arrived from Taronga Zoo.

1.0 Saati (2018) Ketut x Pia
0.1 Squid (2020) Odie x Paula

Perth Zoo’s four young males are transferring to Gorge Wildlife Park shortly:

1.0 Sawatdi (2019) Cerdik x Paddy
1.0 Amir (2020) Cerdik x Paddy
1.0 Tom (2020) Cerdik x Paddy
1.0 Ulani (2020) Cerdik x Paddy

It appears their father, Cerdik, is now deceased.

A female Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo joey has begun to emerge from mum Kaluli's pouch.

The father is Huli, and excitedly this little joey is Perth's first ever female joey in their history.

A female is particularly good news and brings the regional population to 14.10 Goodfellow’s tree kangaroos.

There’s currently a shortage of young females, with the second and third youngest born 2013 and 2021; and bearing in mind this species typically only lives until it’s mid-teens.

Asian small-clawed otter update:

The bachelor group have now transferred to Gorge: Otters on the move

Cerdik is alive and well and joined his four sons (Sawatdi, Amir, Tom and Ulani) in making the move.

The otter exhibit will be cleaned ahead of the new pair (Saati and Squid) moving in from their behind the scenes exhibit.

Elephants leaving May 2025:

Major milestone in Asian Elephant build at Monarto Safari Park

Putra Mas and Permai will depart Perth Zoo in May 2025.

Interestingly, the zoo’s first elephant arrived in May 1922, 103 years prior to the anticipated phase out.

Perth’s first elephant (a bull) only stayed at the zoo for six days; with the zoo then holding elephants from 1923-1961; and then 1963 to present.

It will be a day filled with nostalgia when Perth Zoo sends away its last two elephants and ends a significant era for the establishment. Has Perth Zoo consistently kept elephants for more than a century, or was there ever a period of time when there were zero elephants at the zoo?

It will certainly be the end of an era; also for Auckland and Melbourne, who will phase out elephants this year after 101 and 141 years respectively.

There were two periods since the first elephant arrived in May 1922 that Perth Zoo has been without elephants (1922-1923) and (1961-1963):

1922-1922
1923-1961
1963-2025

Brief History of Perth Zoo’s Elephants

The first elephant was an Asian bull named Jumburoo (15 years of age). He was noted to be aggressive and since Perth were unable to manage him, he was sold to a circus six days after his arrival. Perth stated they would only hold females from that point on.

Perth was without elephants until 1923 when Ranee arrived. She remained at Perth Zoo until her death in 1961. Five additional elephants (all female) came and went (died/transferred out) within that time frame.

Perth was without elephants until 1963 when two females arrived. Tricia and Tanya arrived together. Tanya was transferred out in 1971; Tricia died in 2022. A third female arrived sometime in 1963 and was sold to a circus in 1965.

An additional three elephants arrived during Tricia’s time - a male named Putra Mas and two females named Permai and Teduh. Teduh died in 2007; but Putra Mas and Permai remain, which means Perth Zoo have therefore held elephants continuously since Tricia’s arrival in 1963.

Thanks very much @Zoofan15 for the information. It's amazing that Perth Zoo has continually maintained elephants for over a century, other than a couple of very brief periods of time. That's fascinating!

You’re welcome. Auckland Zoo’s 101 years (1923 to present) and Melbourne Zoo’s 141 years (1883 to present) are uninterrupted; so along with Perth’s phase out, it represents a monumental end of an era for the zoos involved, following in the footsteps of city zoos around the world like Wellington Zoo (1985), Adelaide Zoo (1991) and London Zoo (2001). It’d be no surprise to see Taronga Zoo follow suit before the decade’s out.

The death of Tricia proved what high esteem the public hold Perth’s elephants in; but it’s 100% the right move and one I applaud them for taking.

Had a friend who saw Permai today. Said she looks absolutely miserable in her enclosure. She is STILL swaying side to side, and still got another year before moving. I hope she doesn't die of depression before her move to Monarto.

It’s not an ideal situation, but elephants are resilient animals. Auckland Zoo has never held more than two elephants at a time in their 101 year history of keeping the species. Inevitably, elephants were left alone for a period of time following the death of a companion and were able to adjust. Kashin reportedly grieved heavily for the juvenile Koru and then lived alone for a further seven years until Burma arrived. Burma in turn waited for six years until Anjalee arrived.

I’m sure Perth’s keepers are doing the best they can for her in the meantime. I understand their support, while incomparable to that of her species, has been of great benefit to Permai as she adjusts to life without Tricia.

Tree-kangaroo joey named:

The joey has been named ‘Muku’ after the village in Papua New Guinea.

@Luke899

Yeah poor Permai :(, like ZooFan15 said, her resilience will hopefully remain strong and in just over a year she will be in a much bigger place and hopefully find happiness again. I know her keepers would be doting expertly on her still, its a shame Putra Mas and her cant socialise more but its tough generally with male Elephants in the solitary mentality such a striking opposite of the female social bonds being imperative to psychological wellbeing,
