Probably not for the time being. Maybe down the road in a few years they will get a new bull hippo, but not for now.Is the San Diego Zoo planning to bring in a male Nile Hippo now that the exhibit is spruced up?

It does not seem to be the same as before as it seems they are expanding into where the takin were.Does anyone know if the new panda habitat will be expanded or if it will remain the same as it was before?
Are the takins going to be on another exhibit or are they going to be held of-exhibit?It does not seem to be the same as before as it seems they are expanding into where the takin were.
I know that some of the exhibits for large animals, like the giraffe or the rhino, aren't big enough for today standards, but the SDZ will do anything for pandas, even if that means taking the space of another animal exhibit (in this case, the takin).I wonder why they want to expand the panda habitat. The "old one" did fit for the needs of the pandas, they had offspring and for a species that doesn't move that much, it was big enough as well. I think there are other exhibits that should be expanded instead.
Here's my POV on it. Pandas are an animal that everyone has their eyes on. So, if your panda exhibit it mid, that'll say a lot to people
The DC zoo has incredible panda exhibits. My opinion is that the old panda habitat form the SDZ was a little bit outdated for my taste and I'm very happy that they are improving them to give them a better home.No renovation will match DC Zoo outdoor yards. Best out there
It was one of the newer requirements for pandas to return from my understanding. Without the improvements, they would have been declined the chance for pandas again.I wonder why they want to expand the panda habitat. It is my understanding that due to Funani's age, the Zoo does not have an interest in bringing in any additional hippos until after she passes. Is the San Diego Zoo planning to bring in a male Nile Hippo now that the exhibit is spruced up?
It will be interesting to see if this pans out. At 39 she could still have over a decade of life ahead of her and with the push for bloats of larger numbers the sooner we can get Amahle breeding the better. Also, AFAIK the SSP still considers Funani genetically valuable and has recommended she be bred again. It is my understanding that due to Funani's age, the Zoo does not have an interest in bringing in any additional hippos until after she passes.
Amahle is still only 4 years old, and female hippos don't typically start breeding until they are about 7 years old, so she still has another few years to go. Also, I can confirm that there are no plans to move her elsewhere for the time being, as that would leave her mother alone. However, she is a very genetically valuable animal as her dad was wild-born, so hopefully she can get a mate and have calves in the future. It will be interesting to see if this pans out. Little For Sure. Sandiego exhibits always felt small and garden like backyard in cityIt was one of the newer requirements for pandas to return from my understanding. Without the improvements, they would have been declined the chance for pandas again.
I can't say all of the exhibits in SDZ are great, but some are prety huge, like the elephant. Also some exhibits for small mammals are prety good.Little For Sure. Sandiego exhibits always felt small and garden like backyard in city
I know what you mean and I share your opinion in a way. However: Quality wise it was not that bad, a lot of natural substrate, good vegetation, climbing structures, always shady areas. And again: It is not as the pandas were "gallop" all the time thru their exhibit.Little For Sure. Sandiego exhibits always felt small and garden like backyard in city
Have you ever been to the zoo before? Sure, some of the zoo's exhibits may not be the greatest but all and all, nearly all of the exhibits are actually quite decent, except for maybe the giraffes. The Safari Park has a few world class animal exhibits for some animal species if that is what you were basing it off of.Little For Sure. Yes, 2015, 2017, 2019 & 2023. Have family in Fallbrook and visit. Carnivore exhibits are very smol for ocupant size. Cats specially. At least leopards can rotate in asia and africa. Bears are nothing special to today standid. Polar Bear is nothing like Colmbus or Detroit. Elephant exhibit isn’t the biggest for what it could have been. Piggy bank can only hold so many coins. Safari park and Zoo are not the same. I don’t see the connection other than same organization? Space wise for species the zoo has habitats aren’t that big or world class. I appreciate animals in larger spaces, that is all. Smol campus, varied terrain, only so much can be done. I understand.Have you ever been to the zoo before? I definitely wouldn't consider 100 acres to be "small" for a zoo. There are many major zoos in the world that are smaller than 100 acres, such as Cincinnati (75), Berlin (86.5), Dublin (70), and Singapore (69).Smol campus, varied terrain, only so much can be done.
Does anyone has information about this? Are the takins going to be on another exhibit or are they going to be held of-exhibit?
