Believe these pied tamarins will be from Colchester.

Are Colchester going out of pied tamarins? With the Geoffroys already gone on one side of the enclosure if the pied tamarins depart the other side it will be quite a loss of lovely small primates in that area that showcases them so well - just the coppery tit monkey remaining (along with the tamandua and sloth).

Looking at the website after I wrote the above they appear to have exited the pied and now have goeldis and white lipped / red bellied tamarin.

I missed the tamarin swap.

Zoo opened late today, at 11am. Banham Zoo's facebook account said this was because they were having issues loading the camels for a move to their new home.

Anyone know anything about this move? Is it to another zoo or elsewhere in the zoo, and what is planned for the camel enclosure?

According to the Facebook thread they are moving to Hobbledown Epsom who appear to already have some domestic Bactrian so assume they will be mixed in there. Shame to see them go.

The eastern daily press have said that water buffalo will join from watutunga wildlife preserve
I believe Watatunga only got theirs(two females) back from their 'winter home'- presumably living with a herd somewhere, quite recently. Surprised to hear they are moving them again.

Had an enjoyable morning at Banham today. Weather was very warm and the car park surprisingly busy but the zoo didn't seem crowded. The weather brought the animals out which was lucky.

Quite a few changes around the place to accommodate already reported new arrivals and a few departures.

In the small primate / bird walkway:
  • The White faced saki family have moved to the enclosure at the entrance that is on the side of the Tropical House and has it's indoor accommodation inside the house
  • A couple of aviaries in the area there were empty
  • Emperor Tamarins have moved into the enclosure previously occupied by the Sambirano bamboo lemur
  • The Golden headed lion tamarin enclosure was signed empty - I couldn't see a new location for them
  • A pair of Geoffroys marmosets were visible in their new space just before the golden lion tamarins - fun to watch
  • A good collection of small primates in that one area now with Goeldi monkeys, pygmy marmosets, white faced saki, golden lion tamarin, emperor tamarin and cotton top tamarins all in quick succession (as well as the pied tamarins and coppery titi monkeys elsewhere).
  • The remains of the old aviaries / small primate enclosures have been removed in the row opposite the penguins with new planters installed making the area look more tidy
  • The Sambirano lemur is now in the former white faced saki monkey enclosure, with ring tailed lemurs and red bellied lemurs occupying the other two enclosures in that square.

  • Opposite them, the black and white ruffed lemur is in the enclosure previously occupied by the gibbons

  • The pied tamarins have both sides of the island area and they were outside playing in the sun. When the howlers started up the tamarins took to the tops of their bushes and trees to call out which was interesting to watch. Super to see them having enjoyed them so much at Colchester and they have a new space as good if not better than their old one
  • The coppery titi monkey family now have the space previously occupied by the ring tailed lemurs next to the genets in the discovery area
  • The new female margay (Tepin) was in one of the enclosures previously occupied by a Pallas's cat. Both of the other enclosures for Pallas's still had cats visible. The male margay was also out in his enclosure which was nice to see.
In the bird area there were a few more departures since my last visit, these were birds who were prominent members of the flying displays before so hopefully they get to fly in their new homes. The zoo signed where they had gone though the aviaries remain empty
  • Candy and Floss the galahs left for Kirkleatham Owl centre on 9/4
  • Sid the Kookaburra left for Suffolk Owl sanctuary on 13/3
Was nice to see all three young spider monkeys playing in the sun with the adults and was surprised and pleased to find the tigers out and about early on offering good views.

The new red panda female looked at home and the two pandas seemed friendly with each other. She's a pretty young panda. The new otter seems to have settled in well too with the pair noisy and active.

Was also great to see a juvenile African spoonbill in the mixed aviary opposite the former camel enclosure. Super to see a youngster and looked lovely, quite a treat.
