Global Captive Orca Population

Here’s a summarized update regarding Wikie and Keijo from a webinar by the Whale Sanctuary Project (WSP)…

The French Government is to decide their fate in the coming weeks. That decision will be made public by the government. Due to the spirit behind the legislation banning cetacean captivity in France and public outcry relating to the proposed Japan transfer, the government opened a period of time in the month of April for relevant parties to submit “expressions of interest” in regards to the future of Wikie and Keijo.

The webinar describes three of the proposed plans. From the way it’s worded in the webinar, it sounds like these are the three with the most momentum. However, in a news letter WSP released today, it’s stated that transfer to Lori Parque or a facility in Asia is also still on the table. I’ll summarize the three discussed proposals below in no particular order.

Proposal 1- Wikie and Keijo remain at Marineland Antibes on the condition that their current facilities are updated and improved.

Proposal 2- A sanctuary is built in the waters of Northern France. Much is unknown about the feasibility of such a sanctuary as no testing or site location research has been done. WSP states they notified the government that if this is the chosen path, WSP would be happy to assist in whatever capacity is needed.

Proposal 3- The orcas are transported to WSP’s sanctuary in Canada on an “accelerated plan” while the sanctuary is still being built. The whales would be moved to a “bay pen” which seems to be an updated version of what Keiko lived in upon first arriving to his cove in Iceland. The bay pen would be 10 times the size of their current facility in Antibes, divided into several pools, and feature a slide out, scale, and much of the other husbandry equipment at current land based captive orca facilities. The whales would remain in this pen while the entire sanctuary is completed. They make a point of noting this pen though already seemingly quite large, is just a fraction of the size of what the entire sanctuary will be. In the future this bay pen will be used to acclimate other newly arriving whales to the sanctuary. After months of preparation in Antibes, the whales would be transferred to Nova Scotia in Spring to Summer of 2025. It sounds like the bay pen is already in the process of being built regardless of the government’s decision with Wikie and Keijo.

The French Government has informed the WSP as well as other interested organizations that Marineland Antibes has agreed to abide by whatever decision the government makes. The government also said they would spend the month of May reviewing the proposals and release their decision in June.

Regarding the three proposals, I did not intend to show any bias towards one or the other. The reason three is so much longer than the other two is that they simply spent a lot more time talking about it as it is their own proposal.
I’d be happy to put my personal opinion in another post, but wanted to leave it out of this update.

I've seen several people online say that the killer whale skeleton on display at Kobe is Bingo.

It's not. It's a historical whaling specimen from the 1950's and has been on exhibit at the aquarium ever since. It used to hang from the ceiling but during the renovation it was re-articulated and is now a standing model. There used to be a page about it on Kobe's old website.
Ty for saying this I too have seen this information and have wondered about if this is really true.thanks for clearing it up!:)

Jades calf is a male and has been named Jingxi
which means surprise in Chinese. This addition now means that there are now 14 orcas at chimelong spaceship(11 males, 5 females). He was born on October 6th 2023 and moved to the spaceship on the 22nd of May 2024

This account is claiming that both the Sun Asia whales died a while ago. I don't know what their source is and I can't ask as I don't have an Insta account. I can't find the info anywhere else to verify.

Makes sense, as they haven't been seen or mentioned since their arrival circa 2017. Sun Asia seemed to have long moved on from their planned 'orca project' - financial issues were brought up but if there's no orcas to build a complex for, there would be no need for further investments. You would also assume that if there were orcas still present they would've been at least 'seen' like the Wuxi orcas.

I think that they must have passed away granted no new info/plans from Sun Asia like Wuxi(Does anyone know what’s happening with the Wuxi orcas and when their orca facility will open?) Also interesting to note is that they also say that Wuxi and Sun Asia exchanged a male and female

Wuxi currently have two orcas; there was photo proof of them from May of last year, still in the holding facility. Unsure if they are a male and female. Due to funding issues, there have been multiple barriers surrounding construction over the years. Wuxi's permit expired last October, so they would've had to reapply for a permit to continue holding them or move the orcas elsewhere.

Earlier this year it was announced the Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park plans to build a killer whale stadium. They share the same ownership as Shanghai Haichang, but their two surplus males will be going to Zhengzhou later this year. With that in mind, I'm wondering if Wuxi will end up sending their pair here; probably alongside some of Chimelong's orcas too.

This person is known for her dubious claims and mistery sources, i'd take information from her account with a grain of salt ^^" Unfortunately there's no way to verify the information, and there's not much known about the whale sin China in general. We barely had any information about the Chimelong whales either, until they were put on display, so I imagine we'll have to wait and see which individduals are going to be seen at the facilities that are still under construction

I wouldn't be surprised if they have passed away as surely there should have been pictures/videos leaked of them somewhere by now (case in point the photos of the whales at Wuxi from last year and the multiple photos of the Chimelong whales that popped up online over the years) if they are still alive. Info has been trickling out of China for a few years about the Chimelong whales as well as the other Chinese whales it just rarely gets picked up by the wider media. I do agree that the account in question rarely cites sources and often provides false/incorrect information though.

Apparently, Zenghzou orca exhibit is due to be finished in July, whether it will open then is unclear though as surely they will need to give whichever animals they do transfer time to acclimate. Could be they send one of the females given that they are both proven breeders now although neither are successful mothers as they both rejected their calves which is to be expected.

Also interesting to note on the sun aisa orcas is that they announced in 2021 that they will have a killer whale museum and show in their phase 2 here’s the link 临沂极地海洋世界要建虎鲸馆,还有水下表演,持续提升才能赢青睐_百科TA说
This has since stagnated though; the Killer Whale 'building's construction has stopped. I believe a photo from last year showed the building still without it's roof whereas other similar buildings had had their roofs installed.

Definitely, they were due to open in 2019, quite surprised construction is ongoing, a lot of these places just seem to be endless money pits. Can't remember if it was china orca news that thought they might have been holding 2 females somewhere?

This means that if the orcas are dead they must have died between 2021-2023? considering that it was announced in 2021. However they might have been sold to another park such as Hatching?

This would make sense as to why she was chosen to move to Suma. Hopefully this pregnancy pans out. If so, this will be the first successful calf in Japan in more than a decade and will surely help draw crowds to Suma.
I really hope it pans out to so sad what happened to Lovey’s calf…:(

An update to this. A taxonomy committee, who are members of the Society for Marine Mammalogy, have rejected the proposal to make Bigg’s and resident orcas into separate species. Although a majority of the committee did vote in favor, it wasn’t the required 2/3rds.

They did agree to make them subspecies, so now there are the subspecies O. orca ater (residents), O. orca rectipinnus (Bigg’s), and O. orca orca (the nominate subspecies).
