Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2024

That doesn't surprise me..they do tend to give up on species rather than persevere. It was only a few years ago they formed this group and not so long after that, were publicising the first Diana birth at the zoo for many years, now just going out of them...I also guess this last male may go abroad or is it too much to hope another UK zoo is establishing a group.
Probably testament to the mind set the zoo management is now in. It don't make no sense as the species is tied to several high profile conservation projects in West Africa. For goodness sake, TWZ make something out of it and publicly communicate the darn thing!!!!

I think this all stems from the fact that the two females are now post breeding age. Unfortunately when they first got them(two sisters from Newquay zoo) they were already well advanced in years, around 17-19 age group. Paired with a younger male born at Paignton. I presume the formation of this group was initiated during Sharon Redrobe's 'expansion'tenure as CEO. A species they kept formerly but not for a long time .One female produced 4 male youngsters(1dns) and the other, none. So you can see how they soon reached a dead end with them when the 2 females,or at least the one that bred, became too old for more breeding and with no females born into the group to continue. But it's sad to now see them jettison such a visually attractive group, after the effort of establishing them in the first place.

I suppose they could have send 1-2 younger females to replace the non-reproductive female that was left (after Mrs. Redrobe departed the management console)?!

It would mean importing some new ones....seems they don't want the hassle, easier to just disband the group.
Estimado @Pertinax, a more switched on mammal / animal collection curator and general zoo management would have made the effort to import (despite all the Brexit hassle that is screwing up international animal exchange Continent-UK-way as well as vice versa).

Since, Messrs. Redrobe is out of the way new developments and dynamic has changed and not always for the better (notwithstanding the fact the then CEO had her own "faults").

Like another post mentioned the L’Hoests and De Brazza’s Monkeys are still present within the collection. The zoo keeps a breeding troop of both.

The zoo keeps 2.3 L’Hoests and 2.4 De Brazza’s. The plan is to send a male L’Hoests ‘Kanye’ to a new zoo now he has reached maturity and keep the family group which consists of the two parents and their daughters. The father ‘Gimini’ may leave in the future to allow the young daughters to breed.

The De Brazza’s are split into two troops. The main troop consists of 3 females and a male who arrived from Blackpool in 2022 called ‘Marcus’ and the other troop consists of mother and son who’s future is not certain at the zoo and may leave in the future.

From my understanding the plan is to keep all 3 species of Guenon within the collection. I’ll get more information within the next couple of days and post it here.
We’re are the pair of de’brazzas?
also can anyone tell me how many of the following species there are :
Leopards, howler monkeys, bonobos, orangutans, bush dogs, zebra, brown spider monkeys and black spider monkeys, chimps,
Vicuña,
Also any names of any animals at the zoo would be appreciated

The mother and son pair of De Brazza’s Monkeys are the closest to the Gibbon Forest and next door to the Howler Monkeys.

The zoo has:
Amur Leopard (1.0)
Snow Leopard (1.1)
Black Howler Monkey (1.1 siblings)
Bonobos (6.8)
Bornean Orangutans (2.1)
Bush Dogs (0?)
Chapmans Zebra (4.0 siblings)
Brown Spider Monkeys (0)
Black Spider Monkeys (4.2.1)
Chimpanzees (5.4)
Vicuñas (1.1.1 Unsure of juveniles sex)

I’ve got the names of most species at the zoo but I don’t want to overboard this forum with them. I’ll send you a PM later with the information your after.

Thankyou so much

Miss Redrobe deserves a lot more credit then she currently gets for the work she’s done at Twycross. I don’t think we would be seeing the zoo how it is today without her and her teams work. From developing new exhibits and areas for the zoo to bringing in new species to help educate the public and for the wider view of conservation and breeding programs. I’ve met her a few times walking around Twycross and she was certainly a lovely lady. She had to take the zoo through the coronavirus as well which could have seen the zoo closing its doors for ever. She’s done wonders for Twycross and should be proud of what she has achieved.

I always thought Redrobe was excellent for TZ. It transformed when she took over.

Just like the previous ex vet in charge Ms Boardman, how was also brilliant for Twycross. Both have done things that can be viewed as good, but dig deeper and you realise that both left the zoo with huge problems that will take a long time to sort out, but I realise that I will probably shouted down for saying this but Sharon wasn't the Saint people on here think she was and wasn't good for the zoo.

Agreed!!

Right we clearly disagree, but answer me this if she was doing such a good job why did she leave, if she was doing such a good job and had done nothing wrong it just doesn't make any sense to me, to leave just when the ground was about to be broken on something that could be viewed as there crowning achievement, unless there was a conflict of interest found.

I don’t need to answer anything thanks. I am happy to agree to disagree. Have a great evening :)
