Prague Zoo Praha Prague Zoo News 2024

June list of arrivals and births is online:

- female fossa from Duisburg
- male southern pig-tailed macaque from Arnhem
- 1.2 spot-billed pelicans from Zlin

Selection of more interesting births:
- 3 chicks of Egyptian vulture, palm cockatoo, yellow-hooded blackbird, rufous-cheeked laughingthrush, crested oropendola, 2x Visayan tarictic hornbills, several African open-bills and greater flamingo chicks, magpie geese, nominate song trush, Edwards's fig parrot, 2 jaguarundi cubs, female white-lipped deer, black-and-rufous sengi, smooth snakes, giant Asian pond turtle.

The zoo´s also published pics of a blue crane chick that got adopted by red-crowned crane pair, but this chick is missing on their list, it had to hatch only in July.

Is there another chick with another red-crowned pair then? I got this (fairly terrible) photo during a visit on the 20th June:

If not it's a little odd it's not on the list. The fossa likely arrived after this as well.

Have a couple of questions as I'll be visiting soon enough now:
Are the black and rufous sengi back on-show? And are the majority of the laughingthrushes listed on ZTL on-show, and if so, predominantly where? I'd imagine Sichuan and the South-East Asian birds bit right?

cerperal,
your pic shows a blue crane chick (red-crowned crane chick at that age would have reddish-mottled body color). Thus, yes, it is missing from published birth list.

amur leopard,
I can´t help with sengis. But re laughtingtrushes, almost all species from ZTL are on-show. 3 species are in SE-Asian bird aviaries, 2 species are inside aviary in front of Sichuan and the remaining ones are inside Sichuan house.

They will replace Javan Leopard and Clouded leopard in the carnivore house

And yes it is a new species
That really is too bad. Both Javan and clouded leopard reserve far more attention from zoos in the EAZA region and the populations are both not developping satisfactorily.

Hey there!

I've visited Prague Zoo for the first time two months ago, and I'll be back there with a friend in two weeks. I wanted to know something about some species I didn't see last time (if they're still at the zoo, where can we find them and what are the best hours to see them), here's the list:

BEST TIME TO SEE THEM
  • Garnett's galago
  • Geoffroy's cat
ARE THEY STILL AT THE ZOO/WHERE CAN WE FIND THEM
  • Goodman's mouse lemur
  • Bush thick-knee
  • Ashy woodpigeon
  • Little bittern
  • Striated heron
  • Boat-billed heron
  • White-throated piping guan
  • Peruvian thick-knee
  • Crested oropendola
  • Blacksmith lapwing
  • Red-winged starling
  • Oriental bay owl
  • Buffy fish-owl
  • Wonga pigeon
  • Blue-faced honeyeater
  • Bateleur eagle
Also I've just found out about the fossa taking over the javan/clouded leopards exhibits. Very interesting, dp you know if the fossa will be put on show by the end of July?

Thanks in advance to whoever will answer to these questions :)
