Hi!

Nice to everyone here. My name is Toki, and I'm a Japanese businessman currently working in Malaysia. I've been passionate about zoos and aquariums since childhood and make it a point to visit them every weekend. I'm excited to join this community to learn more about zoos around the world and to share my own experiences.

I understand that some Asian facilities may not be as animal-friendly as those in Western countries, and I just want to share the reality here, so please understand that.

Looking forward to engaging with all of you!

Thank you.

Welcome!

But some asian-facilities also do some incredible work and their standards easily equal those facilities. Not to mention that asian facilities hold populations of some endangered species that aren't found in zoos elsewhere so they have a crucial role to play!

Welcome Toki, I would appreciate people that live in-country and can give more perspective on developments, new species and exhibits in Malaysia's zoos. I assume you live in Kuala Lumpur so the lovely Zoo Negara is nearby.

Quite a few people here are more open to the Asian perspective on zoos and that sometimes developments in zoos do not happen as fast as we want ..., but quite a few zoos in Asia are evolving quite nicely or are at the forefront like Singapore, Taipeh, Khao Kheow, Saigon and I a good few others. And not even naming zoos in PR China nor Japan!!!

Looking forward to your contributions.

Welcome. Nice to have another Zoo chatter from Asia. Do share your views on zoos there and I would echo the thoughts of others and say some Asian facilities are on par in terms of quality with western zoos, from what I have seen from reviews that includes the major Malaysian and Japanese zoos amongst others.

Just noticed you live and work in Taiping. So, your closest zoo park is the Zoo Taiping and Night Safari. I really would welcome that you might update the zoo news from Zoo Taiping regularly.

I am not sure how frequently you get to travel to Kuala Lumpur or Melaka to visit the 2 other major zoos.

What other zoos are there in Malaysia?

Thanks! Yes, I can see that the environment that surrounds zoos are improving in the past years, and some zoos are starting to have high standards to protect local species.

Thanks! Yes, I belive I have a very different point of view compared to members from other parts of the world, so I'd like to share them here.

Yes, the closest zoo to my home will be Zoo Taiping. I go there 2-3 times a month, and enjoy the place very much. I'll make updates on the information of the zoo, since it seems to be changing in the past months.

I also drive to areas near KL t go to zoos. Here are the major zoos in Malaysia that I went in the past few months:
- Zoo Taiping
- Penang Bird Park
- The Lost World of Tambun
- Zoo Negara
- KL Bird Park
- Zoo Melaka
- A'Famosa Safari Wonderland

There are a few more big zoos in peninsular Malaysia, so I'm planning to visit them soon too.

Welcome to ZC @Toki! Always lovely to have another ASEAN zc member. I remember going to Melaka zoo but that was a decade ago and things might have changed there. Heard that Taiping Zoo is pretty good so would love to go there someday

Which other Asian zoos would you say are on par with western zoos aside from Singapore, Taipei and Zoorasia in Yokohama?
