Sadly male Nepalese red panda (Ailurus fulgens) Kenzo (*22.06.2010) passed away last month, he suffered from a gastric torsion. He was born in Tierpark Görlitz and had been living in Gelsenkirchen since 14.07.2011.

In June 3 Harlequin quails (Coturnix delegorguei) hatched, is this a zoo first breeding for Gelsenkirchen?

Recently a pair of McCord's snake-necked turtles (Chelodina mccordi) arrived from Nordens Ark where they hatched in 2007. This is a new species for Gelsenkirchen and they can be found in ELE Tropenparadies.

On the 10th of June a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) was born to 9-year old female Franzi, this is her first young.

Recently a male and 2 female Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) (*2023) arrived at the zoo. This is a new species for the zoo.


Recently 2 female Common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) named Jacky and Kaja arrived from Krakow zoo, currently they left quarantine but have not yet been introducted to the rest of the group. This move means that Krakow has no chimpanzees anymore.

Around a week ago 2 female Striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) arrived from Zoo Braunschweig.

Last week male California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) Teun returned from Zoo Wuppertal.

In May I visted Zoom Gelsekirchen. The zoo is wonderful and the habitats are so natural and the enrichments are good. The animals also look balaced and healthy.
They have 3 type of bears. Polar bears: male Bill, female Lara and a special lady Antonia who is a dwarf Polar bear. It is always very exciting to visit these bears.
They also have European brown bears and Kamchatka brown bears. It is so interesting to see the two subspecies next to each other. The Europeans are Frieda, Alma and Smilla and the Kamchatka bears Juri and Kolja.
The zoo has a big group of Sumatran orangutans in the Jungle Hall. The leader is the 50+ years old Schubbi, the future breeding male Dobi and females Farida, Ogan, Djamuna and Najla. From them only Najla allowed to breed. Schubbi's son Awang moved to Zoo Zürich few months ago to be there the new breeding male. There is another orangutan in this zoo. Her name is Kasih, she is a hybrid orangutan and she is the oldest in zoos with her 60+ years.
The zoo also have a big group of West African chimpanzees. There are 2 adult males, the brothers Tai and Yamou. There are 6 adult females: Jacky, Xandra, Lady, Alexandra, Jahaga and Kaja. The group also countains 4 offsprings: a female Yumma and 3 males Dayo, Kojo and Lisoko.
This zoo doesn't keep elephants.
