Czech zoo trip planning advice

I am planning on making a Czech zoo trip later this year, probably in September.

My plan is to be based in Prague for about ten days and to make day trips to other zoos using only public transport.

Which zoos would people suggest are best to include under these circumstances? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in chameleons, Zoo Zajezd is a must - easily reached from central Prague via a tram and then a bus - the journey takes a shade over an hour.

Plzen is also probably a must - incredible species diversity and packed full of rarities. It is easily reachable by train from Prague, then a short walk from the station to the zoo. Plzen is also a very pretty city in its own right.

All larger Czech zoos are doable as day trips by public transport from Prague - in theory. You will have to plan correctly, you might spend long hours on travel and dont have as long time at some zoo as you would like, but it´s possible.

You might consider to divide your trip in two parts. And move your "base" to Olomouc (or Brno) for a few days. Olomouc is ideal central starting point for collections in east part of the country (Zlin + Ostrava).

When you plan, look also a little over the teller. For example Dresden zoo is very nice place and just 2 hours by direct train from Prague. Or Vienna zoo - just 1,5 hour from Brno, and considered in TOP3 best zoos in Europe.

To assess potential collection on their "attractivity", check ZTL and maybe also their attendance figures.

(BTW The best Czech zoos are Prague, Zlin, Dvur Kralove, Ostrava and Plzen.)

Plzen for sure, and Dvur Kralove as well if you can. I visited Brno and Decin as well a few months ago: Decin is small but not too far from Prague by train; I stayed in Brno so can't comment on how long it takes to get to from Prague but it is on the eastern side of the country.

Also, make at least 2 visits to Prague Zoo if you can - it's huge and hilly.

I recommend Plzen. When I went, it had many XYZ animals, some of which are not found in any other zoo. There are also large ABC animals, but some of these seem to be in cramped enclosures.

Thank you for these responses. I spent some time looking at maps and the zoo locations this afternoon and think I will have to either focus just on Prague and the nearer zoos or do as @Jana suggests and split my time between Prague and Brno or Olomouc.

I have already been to Dresden and Vienna so I think I’ll keep to Czechia on this trip.

Děčín and Ústí nad Labem combination is doable in one day quite easily, Děčín opens at 8:00 so I would recommend going there first.

That’s good to know, I was wondering if that might be a possibility.

From Plzen's train station it's 3 km walk, that is not really short :D Also why would you walk when there is a tram+tram or tram+bus public transport option.

It's a very pretty walk, plus I had wild siskin, green woodpecker, coypu etc when I walked from the station to the zoo earlier this year! I'd say walk and enjoy seeing a new city!

oh ok.
I tried to access the webpage using my phone and the PC via google as well as the link you kindly provided. With both I still get an error message saying my request is blocked.

The only way I can see the webpage is using the Wayback machine internet archives.

I'm guessing it has something to do with your location as it works fine for me in the UK.

Hopefully this gets attention so I don't have to create a new thread...

Hello everyone, I will (finally) be in Czech Republic during this fall and winter until the new year and beyond, I won't disclose here how much time I'll stay, but I'll say it is a VERY generous amount of time and I'll most likely visit neighbouring countries as well during the holidays, with particular interest in Germany, Poland, Austria and perhaps even Slovakia.

I have therefore made a list of institutions and collections that I intend to visit and another list on which I have doubts or questions and I'd like Your help with those.
Any other tip or suggestion is very much welcome.

I will say that I intend to visit the bigger zoos on multiple days, going even more than 2 days if necessary, as this will be my first time I visit without pesky companions who rush me to the end because there wouldn't be any second day at the zoo:rolleyes:.

I'm also very much open to meetups and group visits, but I won't promise I won't squeal like a rodent for the excitement as it's been more than 3 years since my last zoo visit, have visited very few zoos in my life and I'll probably go on zoo overdose:D:confused:.

With these disclaimers and info-dump, here's the lists I've made of collections I intend to visit:

EAZA-accredited zoos:
Praha Zoo
Zoological and Botanical garden Plzen
(including AkvaTerra)
Zlín Zoo
Druv Kralovre Safari Park
Zoo Ustì nad Labem
Zoopark Chomutov
Zoo Decin
Zoo Liberec
Zoo Ostrava
Zoo Hodonin
Zoo Brno
Zoo Jilhava
Zoo Hluboka
Zoo Oloumuc

Other collections:
Botanical Garden Liberec
Prague National Museum

Crocodile Zoo Prague and Protivin: I've seen photos of these 2 collections and they don't seem to be good, but I'd be willing to spend a lengthy evening to never set foot in these.

Morsky svet zoo: this seems like one of the few places in the whole Country to have an extensive (and its only draw) collection of saltwater fish and other fish taxa, but from the gallery it seems an overstacked live fish store, though of course my judgement only comes through the lenses of others, so any dismissal of my thought with a reassuring comment would be most appreciated.

Terarium Praha: this place has a rather intriguing history but also kind of sketchy to me, without mentioning that it's probably closed or moved, so any updates on this collection would be highly valuable.

Chleby Zoo: besides from a rare subspecies of Asiatic black bear and the rare red-shanked douc langur I don't think I'll spend more than an evening here looking for these 2 taxa, as much as giving money to these kind of facilities doesn't make me enthusiastic, but given my possibilities of going to either Vietnam or Beauval are slim, I'll make this one sacrifice.

Zoo Dvorec: this zoo looks like it could be a low EAZA level, but I'm most likely missing something, so any comments are welcome.

Zoo Sedlec Faunapark, Zoopark Na Hrádečku, paraZOO Vlašim, Papouščí Zoo Bošovice: they all seem like nice collections and one is even a facility for impaired animals, thoughts?

Zoopark Zájezd: seems like this collection is extensive and has quite a few rare (at least for me) birds and reptiles, unless I'm mistaken I'll most likely pay a visit.

University of South Bohemia: thanks to Jakub for bringing their mole-rat collection to my attention (rhyme not intended), I'll 100% pay a visit.

I'm mainly interested in rare and exotic species so If any of You know any other private or not collections that fit this criteria (and are not too shady) do let me know! Any and all help is appreciated, thank You all in advance.

Closed several years ago, It was a questionable place with hand reared ´´rescued´´ cubs of big cats and so on.

Zoo Dvorec: this zoo looks like it could be a low EAZA level, but I'm most likely missing something, so any comments are welcome.
Dvorec has impressive collection of cobras and also three species of rarely kept genets, so I would at least check their website for the species list and decide if it is worth it for you, cause the zoo is not very good in general.

Zoo Sedlec Faunapark, Zoopark Na Hrádečku, paraZOO Vlašim, Papouščí Zoo Bošovice: they all seem like nice collections and one is even a facility for impaired animals, thoughts?
Na Hrádečku is a small size and very pleasant zoo. It has a very nice snake collection, but the terrarium is currently under reconstruction and idk if it will be finished when you arrive. (Most of the snake species were kept off show, but the zoo promised that the on show part of the terra house will grow extensively during the reconstruction.

I forgot to mention I'd also like to visit behind the scenes when possible, does anyone know if any of these facilities allows for visits behind the scenes, even by paying?
I am aware Plzen doesn't do these anymore
