CERZA News from CERZA

According to a member of the french forum "Les zoos dans le monde", there is a banner in the park saying that the actual white tiger exhibit (3 hectares) will turn into a south-american area for : lowland tapirs, scarlet ibis, macaws, lion tamarins, maned wolves and giant otters. The wolves are a returning species and the otters a new ones.

According to the forum website you provided, this project will be done in 2-3 years.

And I missed a lion tailed macaque birth !

Another news regarding the future new area. The white tigers are now in the previous geladas' enclosure. This will allow the start of the construction of the new south america area.
I would hope that they will eventually phase out the white tigers and change to Sumatera tigers.

But they have already Sumatran tigers in another exhibit ;)

But I agree with the phasing out of the white ones for more interesting and endangered animals.
Cher Antoine, perhaps clouded Leopards then ..., the population is ageing and in need of new holders....!!!

Small news from my visit last week-end :
- Albrecht, male greater one-horned rhino born in 1999 in Nuremberg died last winter. He had dental problems that affected his ability to feed. In view of the worsening of his health, the zoo decided to euthanize him. With female Winona they had 1.3 calves. The last calf, a female, will stay there and the plan is to bring a new male to form a new breeding pair (Winona is now old and has health problems).
- one of the male polar bear died a fed months ago. The zoo has now 1.2 animals.
- the striped hyena male died last year and a new male replaced him. The zoo hopes to start to breed again soon.
- the babirusa pigglet is on show with mum in one of the enclosure. The male, the other female and the pigglet born last year (they were twins but the second ones died) were in the second enclosure.
- regarding the future new south american area, a long walkway footbridge has been built in the former white tigers enclosure and I read (in the zoo's history book published recently) that there will be a 8.000 square meters aviary for parrots, ibisses...
