Taman Safari II - Prigen Taman Safari Prigen news

Taman Safari Prigen has built a new petting zoo called "Pets and Wild Interaction". Judging by the name, I'm guessing that this exhibit is somewhat inspired by those "Children's Zoo" attraction seen in US zoos.

In this exhibit, it's possible for visitors to see and interact with tortoises, rabbits, merino sheeps, Shetland ponies, and also Javan rusa deers, to name a few.

Apparently, there's even a southern cassowary in there, definitely not the kind of bird you want to get close to, let alone pet. Not a fan of this addition and I honestly have no idea what's in their mind to add a cassowary into a petting zoo, though there's possibility that it could be temporary.

#tamansafariindonesia #liburanseru #feeding #pets"

Hopefully the cassowary is replaced with a rhea. This is the same "idiotic" decision as the free-roaming lesser adjutants in Taman Burung pre-revitalization.

I'm genuinely shocked that Indonesian zoos are this lax with their cassowaries. I remember Eco-Green Park also having their birds very close to visitors. In Solo Safari you can stand right above one with only a meter of space between you and the cassowary, not helped by the fact that keepers are placing the food trays close to the fences so they usually stick around near the visitors.

I'm always having to warn kids about touching the "ostrich". An accident is bound to happen in one of these facilities.

Taman Safari Prigen has added capybara to its collection. I'm not sure on where they're exhibited, either in the Baby Zoo or in the America-Europe zone (Taking the formerly maned wolf exhibit).

There's seemed to be a rising trend of Indonesian zoos acquiring capybaras to its collection; from Lembang, Gembira Loka, Jakarta Aquarium, Suraloka, to lately Surabaya. The surge of capybara memes on the internet and their popularity might fueled these trend.

Life goals: jadi capybara, no stress, all chill.” #DiscoverMagicalJungle #TamanSafariPrigen #TheGrandTamanSafariPrigen #LetsGoSafari"

I won't be surprised if Aviary Park Bintaro or Faunaland Ancol acquire capybaras in the future. Heck there's this place near BSD called Jasmine Park that also keeps capybaras.

Several updates has also took place in the Australiana zone. Several dusky pademelons has been moved to the walk-through section of the zone from their separate exhibit (Which was intended to house the park's future koala, whatever happened to that plan).

Around five different species have now occupied the walk-through section and its possible for guests to interact with them closely, those species include red and eastern grey kangaroo, agile wallaby, dusky pademelon, and a couple of black swans.

The park has also added sugar glider into this zone, formerly put off-display. Not sure where its exhibited or if they're intended to be used for photos and interactions.

Anyone have any idea what's with the koala plan? They announced it way back in 2015 and there had been no more update ever since.

Several updates since my visit in 14/08/2024:
The Tarsier house no longer houses tarsiers and now instead have
  • 2 Slow lorises (signed as Nycticebus coucang, though even the zookeepers are unsure of the exact species)
  • 2 Small-toothed palm civets
  • 1 Asian palm civets
The Australiana walkthrough now has several Red-necked Wallabies.
The Australiana area also has a cave that houses a few exhibits, unfortunately all unsigned when I arrived:
  • 1 Hedgehog
  • Sugar Gliders
  • 2 unsigned monitors
  • 1 Carpet Python
  • A Mainland Common Wombat
  • Several Malayan Flying Foxes
  • And 3 Raffray's Bandicoots
The former Bornean Clouded Leopard exhibit is now used as a Striped Hyena enclosure. The clouded leopards are nowhere to be seen.

The former caracal exhibit now houses a pair of servals.

Unrelated question, do you know if they still have the armadillo or if you see them? Or just where its exhibit within the zoo?

On another note, it's very interesting that they decide to display their bandicoots. I'm guessing they're in the same exhibit with the flying foxes? They're used to be some Malayan porcupines in the flying fox exhibit, so I guess having ground-dwelling species in the exhibit aren't new.

The red-necked wallabies also aren't new as I'm aware, they arrived alongside the wombats from Australia Zoo in 2018 I believe. Any idea what monitor lizards species are those?

I would guess that this particular exhibit will eventually turned into the park's small mammal house, sad to see it repurposed into something else. I know native small mammal house are rare in Indonesian zoos, but even more so a tarsier/slow loris house!

Another species that I'm sad to see go, only two zoos that I'm aware of in Java that display Sunda clouded leopards. I'm hoping that the individual was just off-display, though again we're still not really sure about its current status.

I'm planning a Surabaya-Prigen-Batu trip (Not simultaneously) later this year, so I really hope that I'll have a chance to saw and document most of those (sub)species that you and @Sicarius saw! Especially the bandicoots, wombat, and hyena you mentioned.

Unfortunately no, we did not see any armadillos during our visit.

The bandicoots were in a separate exhibit and a keeper told us they had just arrived 2 weeks prior.

The monitors, I unfortunately didn't photograph and I'm not well versed enough to identify them.

It is sad to see the lone tarsier go, but until a proper nocturnal house is built like the one in Batu, I agree with their decision to swap them out with the larger and (slightly) more active civets.

What other members of the cat family are there in the zoo now?

I deplore that Prigen TSI II seems to haphazardly put on display and take off display of iconic animal species. The list is quite large .... and I would wish the zoo to more steadfastly focus on local native and endangered fauna and not develop as you please and not so attraction incentive based ...-wise. I do hope curatorial management and zoo husbandry will take precedence sooner than later.

I agree with your general sentiment, but I feel you might be missing some nuance here.

Firstly, it might not be haphazard. The clouded leopards were very old individuals as I recall, they might have been deceased within the past few years. The tarsier is still alive, but with how relatively bright the current mammal house is and it being a lone individual, I don't think many visitors would easily see them.

Besides, the Small-toothed palm civets and Rafray's Bandicoots are great native additions, the latter of which are not found in any zoo, Indonesian and otherwise.

Secondly, Taman Safari does dedicate itself to preservation of rare and endemic species in the nearby PCBA (Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark). It's a lovely facility that me and a few here have visited that has successfully kept and bred various endangered birds, mammals and fish, some of which are now functionally extinct in the wild, such as the Maratua Shama.

I don't think I would be wrong in saying that, without the success of Taman Safari as an entertainment facility, PCBA would not have been able to preserve as much as it does now.

Taman Safari Prigen apparently have tufted capuchin in their collection, which they haven't announced until now in a video celebrating this year's primate day.

The capuchin and the cotton-top tamarin seen in the video are presumebly housed in the same exhibit complex as each other.

That's odd, I don't think I've seen capuchins in the park during my last visit, so it could be new. The cotton tops can be seen in a small enclosure in the caféteria

Do you have any information on numbers and age / sex of the Carnivora population in the current TS Prigen?
No idea, I think there's a pair of Sumatran tiger put on display in the Baby Zoo area, though there's could be more off-display. There was an African leopard born in 2015 named Thaba. Though aside from Thaba and his parents, I'm not aware of their full number in Prigen.

For other carnivoras, like Moosman Joe said there's a pair of serval and I think a pair of striped hyenas atleast on-display.

Post from Taman Safari Prigen's Instagram seems to have hinted that the American beaver are no longer on display in the Aquatic Land, with only the Humboldt penguin and harbor seal being shown as the area's inhabitant.

This might simply be a case of a zoo simply showcasing their more popular roster instead, though I doubt that beavers aren't that popular already in the internet. Still, there's no public confirmation from Prigen if they still have the beavers on-display or not.

I feel this has been true for a while, they weren't there when I visited last month, 2 years ago and even back in 2015. Do you know during what period were they on display?
