Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

And only two weeks after I visited as well. I wasn't planning on visiting Edinburgh again in 2025, but seeing as they now have a Moo-Deng I may have to arrange something.
When does a Pygmy Hippo calf become a Moo-Deng, and when doesn't it ? Depends on the vagaries of social media I suspect.

They certainly only mention the names of three females and the male on the website now, indicating she has died (or at least been removed from display). I am sure the male and two younger females from Port Lympne will breed in due course, probably soon.
I know the male is actually from Banham, and wrote this rather badly.

Iknow Quabid the Indian rhino will be moving very soon, but another opportunity for an enclosure refresh and incomers. (It may also give me an opportunity for another holiday- we went to see Sanjay in Berlin after his depature. I like to think his ear twitches were at least him recognising an Edinburgh accent when we spoke to him )
Edinburgh will receive 2 new young rhino bulls next year after he leaves.

Sad news from the zoo today:

"We are sad to share the loss of Snowflake, our leucistic penguin. At 28 years old, he was our oldest male gentoo and a standout character in the colony. He was put to sleep this morning after ongoing age-related health issues.

Snowflake fathered 10 chicks while here at the zoo and also fostered others.

He was a much loved favourite among staff and visitors, and he will be sadly missed."

I visited on the 2nd of November and I thought I saw Nora. Is she a bit rounder than the others?

No ice rink this year? I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I also really liked those giant lantern shows they used to put on, shame they don’t really seem to do them anymore.

There has been some terrible news, Roxie the baby red panda has passed away. It is believed it was a reaction to bonfire night fireworks. It has not been a good year for EZ.

The quicker a legislation regarding the sale and use of fireworks, the better !!!

seams she chocked on her own vomit i live close by and the fireworks where really loud felt like the windows would cave in should charge the gits that let them off all my animals where shaking when there usally ok with the bangs
This is absolutely awful to hear, I unfortunately didn't get to see Roxie on my last visit, but from what I've seen she was such a lovely little baby and it upsets me that she died so early and in such an awful way.
I hear a lot of stories like this every November about people's pets dying of fright because of the fireworks. While I do think there should be some tighter legislation on the sale and use of them, fireworks are still a centuries old tradition that brings communities together, so I don't see the public taking any increased restrictions on them very well, and there definitely would be fierce push-back if it happens.
Whenever I see a post on Facebook about how fireworks affect animals or a post about someone's pet being scared to death, there's always one person in the comments who's like "UM WELL ACTUALLY YOU'RE WRONG" and "Just let people enjoy things you bloody Karens!"

Apparently they do have areas in Edinburgh where fireworks are banned (new for this year) however, bizarrely the area by the Zoo was not included in these areas.

I agree whereby fireworks night is a centuries old tradition and brings communities together, particularly in the dark/cold evenings, but proximity to a Zoo should be a no go area for fireworks.

It always amazes me when zoos themselves have firework displays - it would be hard to enforce near zoos if all zoos didn’t follow this.
