"Moo Deng" The Viral Baby Hippo

Kinda sad the zoo had to take these measures. People should sorta already know not to harass animals, but it appears that isn't the case in this situation. What a shame.
Moo Deng is now almost under surveillance 24 hours a day, so anyone who harms her will not only be punished socially but also legally.

Funny that a zoo known for bad treatment of animals is now put up in the media as taking measures for the well-being of an animal.

From what I've seen from videos, if the enclosure was designed properly the problem visitors wouldn't have been able to harass her in the first place. It's a shame really, as many better zoos all over the world have Moo Dengs of their own that never caught the public's eye.

It both amazes and annoys he how some “basic” animals seem to be just forgotten or be unknown to normies who probably stopped thinking about animals probably once they start thinking that they are too old to look an an animal encyclopedia or something.

Over the past week, I'm sure many of you have seen baby hippos appearing in the media. I wonder if in the past we've had animals that were popular and featured in the media all over the world.

Peanut the Squirrel probably ranks pretty high!

Great channel on YouTube that is collecting these stories, including Moo Deng:

Something interesting I've noted recently related to the popularity of Moo Deng - this hippo has become so popular that the images are accidentally appearing in places!

Over the last several days, auto-generated videos have been appearing on music artists' pages on YouTube. This is nothing unusual - the videos are simply ripping the audio of artists' songs from Spotify or similar platforms and uploading them to YouTube, this is normal part of a YouTube music channel.

But for some reason, the images on these many of videos (which is supposed to be album art) has (seemingly not on purpose) changed to various images of Moo Deng instead. I don't know why, and I haven't been able to find any explanation as for why, either. But it is pretty funny and does show what a reach Moo Deng has had.

It's not entirely unsurprising to see that Moo Deng is so famous, considering that most common zoogoers will mistake an adult Pygmy Hippo for a baby Common Hippo anyway. She's certianly drawing attention to her species, which is a nice plus!

1) The post you are responding was posted before the confiscation of Peanut/P’nut.

2) Peanut/P’nut is irrelevant after the elections unless your algorithm leans towards politics, even then that squirrel is yesterday’s news now.

3) I just don’t think a squirrel whose death is exploited for political grift during the now-finished US elections is in the same league as Moo Deng who has been famous for months now.

Let's be honest, Peanut the Squirrel was never relevant, at least not in the same way Moo Deng was. Moo Deng has been all over the internet for months while Peanut was pretty much confined to TikTok. I didn't even hear about the squirrel until the story of it getting euthanized.

moo deng has sass.. thats why. just like pesto.

Does Mooh Deng have more sass then other pygmy hippo calves? And what does pesto have to do with this?

Is this a serious reply? Do you know the definition of sass?

Watch Moo Deng videos, then compare the calmness of the other calves.
PESTO, also has sass.
I am replying to the OP because the OP said : " It's a shame really, as many better zoos all over the world have Moo Dengs of their own that never caught the public's eye." - so I included PESTO the penguin as another animal who has caught the public eye.

Who the hell is Pesto the Penguin? Obviously this animal has not reached the public eye anywhere near as much as Moo Deng has.

I think you may be experiencing a bit of an echo chamber effect lol, Pesto has gone super viral too. He’s the first king penguin chick hatched at Sea Life Melbourne. He’s even been talked about here on a couple of different occasions, mostly on the Sea Life Melbourne/Australia threads.

Seriously, why are people praising this hippo and penguin as much as Fiona the hippo, or even more? To me there are many way more interesting births this year that show at least some more unique animals, the baby emperor penguin at SWC, baby pangolin at prauge, baby tree too at Bronx and many others from obscure places (Detroit included) which should be recovering WAY more attention.

It's possible, but Mood Deng is pretty much unavoidable on the internet right now. Few individual animals have ever reached such a status. There are many animals that are probably fairly well-known among certain communities, but it takes a lot to reach what Moo Deng has done here.

Cute memable hippo go brrrr

As Fiona the hippo’s number 1 hater this is even worse! At least Fiona had a backstory, this one is just a baby Pygmy hippo that a few workers sprayed water on to start a mega craze. Now don’t even get me started on that penguin. Next is Brookfield Zoo’s very own moo deng is moving to blank.
