Australasian Cheetah Population

0.1 Kuishi (b. 2018) at Monarto Safari Park has given birth to her first litter. Four cubs were born on 5th April and follows the three cubs born among 0.1 Quailee and 0.1 Quella and two cubs earlier last year to 0.1 Kesho all at Monarto - reported on their FB page.

0.1 Quailee's cubs at Monarto Safari Park have been confirmed as 1.2 following a recent examination - reported on social media.

Just a note that only two of these cubs are Quailee’s (the male and one of the females). The third cub (female) was the one born to Quella a week prior, that was cross-fostered into this Quailee’s litter.

For your records, DOB’s are as follows:

0.1 Unnamed (05/03/2023) born to Quella
1.0 Unnamed (12/03/2023) born to Quailee
0.1 Unnamed (12/03/2023) born to Quailee

They’re now hoping for males in the litter of four born in April (currently unsexed) to integrate as adolescents with the male cub born in March.

All seven of Monarto's cheetah cubs have been named - females Tish, Zawadi, Nyota and Mrembo and males Moyo, Mwindaji and Balozi - reported on their FB page.

As Monarto celebrates Tish's first birthday this week (the Instagram stories were posted today, 06/03/2024, although that may be a day late), it has been confirmed that she is the cub born to Quella who was cross-fostered (if that wasn't already known). Great to see her thriving alongside her adopted siblings/cousins!

That’s good to know. We only knew the DOB’s and genders, but not names matched to specific cubs.

The other two in that foster litter are Moyo and Mrembo:

0.1 Tish (05/03/2023) born to Quella
1.0 Moyo (12/03/2023) born to Quailee
0.1 Mrembo (12/03/2023) born to Quailee

Also from Monarto’s page:

In April 2023 Kuishi gave birth to four cubs, two males names Balozi (meaning ambassador) and Mwindaji (meaning hunter) and two females named Zawadi (meaning gift) and Nyota (meaning star).

So that’s all seven cubs accounted for.

A few deaths to report:
  • 0.1 Gemma (b. 2006 at Cango), 0.1 Mazza (b. 2009 at Orana), 1.0 Kanzi (b. 2014 at Orana), 0.1 Nia (b. 2014 at Orana) and 1.0 Quake (b. 2015 at Cango) have all died over the years at Orana due to age-related issues. Thanks to @Zoofan15 for the information on the news thread.
  • Two of the cubs at the Wild Cat Conservation Centre have died - Exton and Dottie. The two remaining cubs Ezra and Darcie are still being handreared.

0.2 Halla and Kyan have both died at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in the last couple years. These king cheetah sisters contributed several litters to the region but never produced any that had their striking patterns. They were the only king cheetah in Australasia - confirmed via email.

It's a shame we don't have more king cheetah. They are such a strikingly beautiful animal.

They were stunning cats. Their numerous offspring were sired by normally spotted males, so assuming these males weren’t carrying the king cheetah gene, it’s no surprise the resulting offspring lacked the king markings.

If the region imports either king cheetah or cheetah carrying the king cheetah gene; and mates them to either the offspring of Halla or Kyan, then that’s our best chance of seeing king cheetah cubs born in Australasia again.

The region doesn’t breed for the king cheetah phenotype, but isn’t adverse to producing them either.

That would be a good way to do it, the gene is wide spread enough through the population for it to happen. Especially given the current state of the cheetah gene pool. With how cheap gene sequencing is, this species is a prime example of how all captive cheetahs should be sequenced and subsequent matches made on actual genetics and not those done on paper.

From Taronga’s TV show – 0.1 Liberty (originally imported from South Africa by Australia Zoo, then moved to Wild Cat Conservation Centre, now at Dubbo) has had a few pseudo pregnancies and miscarriage at Dubbo. They are focussing efforts as their main breeding female with 1.0 Innis who was recently transferred from Monarto.
