Target Species: Brahminy Kite, Spix's Guan, South Asian Box Turtle.

I arrived at the zoo at about 11:15 today, And Headed Straight to the Reptile House in Search of My first target Species: South Asian Box Turtle. When I reached their exhibit, they were surprisingly active and were pleasantly mixed with tokay gecko who managed to evade me until my third visit around the house. All other species were seen in the reptile house. In the surrounding area was siamangs, Cape porcupines, meerkats, weavers, a gift shop, a walkthrough waterfowl aviary, wallabies and Emus. I walked past the parrot aviary, nothing really special in there. I then made my past the tortoise and lemurs into wings of wonder for my next target Species: Brahminy kites. Just about saw them behind the shelter. I saw the spix's Guan in their aviary, My Dad was quite impressed by the Stellers Sea Eagles, south America section and Elephant Eden Which Is 20 Acres in size!! Apart from that there is not much else that I have to say!

Sounds like a lovely visit! Did you manage to see the anteater in the South American section? He seems very shy and has so far evaded me
 
Glad to hear you had a good time. A collection that has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10-15 years.

Were the tapirs shut inside, or was it too hot? A zoo knit pick of mine is tapirs in open paddocks with no cover.

Thank you, The Tapirs were just choosing to stay inside they weren't shut in and it probably too hot for them.

There's a difference between heat with shade (a la a rainforest) and heat with no shade though - and the West Country sun is deceptively incendiary. The tapirs do have a pool in their exhibit, but it's not huge and quite far from their house - I don't blame them for staying inside

But as you say - it is a bit odd that for a species that live in perpetual heat and humidity they seem to hate being out in it. Seems to be a common theme in most zoos that hold them

With the tapirs it is more likely the brightness than the heat itself. I have read that tapirs kept in enclosures with insufficient shade have a tendency to eye problems, they are forest animals after all. I wonder if an awning or similar over their enclosure might help?

This exactly. Also not nearly as humid as it would be in South America. I can’t remember where it was but I seem to remember seeing keepers applying sun cream to their tapirs before who had a very exposed paddock.

Correct. Every Malayan Tapir kept in Australia (at least recently) has gone blind.

Visited for the first time today, really pleasantly surprised!

Had been warned by friends that it was ‘a few hours max’, but we were there from opening to close and loved it!

Great mix of ‘traditional family farm’ and big game animals, with some lovely parks thrown in for the kids.

The entire elephant set up was mind blowing.

On September 18th, the zoo announced they named the capybaras Chestnut, Conker, and Acorn.

On October 10th, it was announced that the zoo transferred (0.2) plains zebras named Azizi and Suzan to Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park in Suffolk.

On October 28th, the zoo announced they acquired a (1.0) white-headed vulture named Arthur which is now on exhibit.

I had a short visit to the zoo farm today. Not much to report other than the fact there are a couple of waterfowl in the collection that don't appear to be on ZTL. Namely a Barnacle goose and a 3 individuals of a species of spot-billed duck either A. poecilorhyncha or A. zonorhyncha. It was good to see the Spix's Guan and given the cold temperatures everything was surprisingly sprightly. I attended one of the bird-of-prey flightshows, which was great, but not the other, so I may have missed out on seeing the Aplomado falcon. Does anyone know if this bird is still in the collection, as it hasn't been marked as seen of ZTL since 2019?

Edit: after comparing some pictures the species is definitely Anas poecilorhyncha
