As a continuation to @Leaf Productions 's challenge, this challenge will see what member can see the most Planet Zoo species in zoological facilities during 2025. This challenge will be global so all Zoochat members can participate.

Linked here is a spreadsheet of all eligible species, note that unless the species has an alternative, you can't switch it out, ie. replacing a Tamworth pig with a pot-bellied pig.

This means that there are a total amount of 195 animals you can get but it's unlikely that someone will get them all due to a lot of rare animals (ie. Brown-Throated Sloth is only in Dallas World Aquarium other than it's native range). A shoutout to @Shorts who started these games.

The Rules
  1. You have to see the animal, even if just for a second. You don't score if you visit a collection but don't see the animal
  2. Photographic proof is not required; your word is your bond.
  3. All entries must be in a numbered list and include the following: the species you’re counting, the day you saw it and the zoo you saw it at. Include Latin BINOMIALS in the list (just use your search browser to find them out) and if there are any replacements, note which animal you are replacing.
  4. You have to see the animal via normal public access during normal public opening hours in public zoological collections, aquariums, museums, public park displays, etc. so not in the wild, expos, farms, pet stories, private facilities, etc.
  5. You must post your updates within 4 months of your visit so I can see your updated progress. If you post several months of visits in the last days of December, it won't count
  6. Violating the rules or participating in unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for disqualification from this year’s competition
  7. Controversial entries due to splits will be discussed on a case-by-case basis
  8. Any issues with any of the above rules are open to discussion but the rules are set and any decisions made are final
  9. The winner will be whoever sees the most Planet Zoo species between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
  10. There is no official deadline to join; however, anyone who joins the game after May 31 can only count eligible species from their two most recent zoo visits.
And with that, the challenge officially begins tomorrow for me but starts first in Christmas Island today. Good luck with this challenge!

For Christmas Island, I mean the Kiribati island also known as Kiritimati island, not the Australian territory
 
This is ridiculous. We now have three global challenges?

I am aware that ZooBinh, who was in charge of the global challenge in 2024 (having been passed the role by Thylo) has his own plans to be posted today. I think it’s a bit presumptuous to just announce your own games like this.

For Indian Elephants, they’re common in enough in captivity that you have to count them specifically if you seen the subspecies. You didn't see any Pallas' Cat and dik-dik or are they not there anymore? They got added last year to Planet Zoo. The tiger, cuvier's Dwarf caiman and yellow anaconda also count but I don't know if you saw them. Now, you have 33 animals (due to the elephant and Forest Buffalo)

I know of the Pallas' cat, tiger and caiman in Blijdorp, it is my home zoo. I just didn't see them this time.

I am quite sure that Blijdorp doesn't have dik-dik nor yellow anaconda, so I cannot count them...

As far as I know, the subspecies status of the Asian elephants in Blijdorp is not known, so I guess I cannot count them already.

And as the buffalo does count, I think I am at 33 species indeed.

Like I mentioned to @Hugo28 , if there isn't any evidence that the Asian elephants are Indian elephants, they shouldn't be counted. So you have 36 animals so far! I'm excited to see how many animals everyone will see. In the warmer months, I'm going to visit most of the zoos @Leaf Productions Visited (due to both of us being in New England), hopefully visiting Roger Williams and Franklin Park during the long weekend for me.

I went to New England Aquarium today (January 29, 2025) with mostly aquatic animals so this visit wasn't that successful.

To explain the Ramat Gan thing, so on my way to the Jerusalem zoo, my bus drove next one of the Safari's walls and I managed to see only those 3 species

  • Is For the Wildlife a nature center as I could only find information that they are an animal hospital so I don't know yet if they could be considered an eligible facility
  • Wild animals don't count
  • The donkey and the animals from Raman Gat don't count as you didn't see the animals during Zoo hours within the Zoo
  • Where did you see the Emu?
  • I couldn't really find any information about Gan Hai, do you have any sources for it? I found out that it was a Zoo but I couldn't find anything else
  • Right now, you have 31 animals but that is subject to change
