Zoochat Challenge North America 2025

Franklin Park Zoo - January 18th 2024
My second Zoo visit was successful as my local Zoo has a decent amount of social mammals, and I was very successful seeing animals that I haven't even seen before.

Primates:
1) Western Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla)
2) Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta)
3) Cotton-headed Tamarin (Saguinus oedipus)
4) De Brazza's Monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus)
Ungulates:
5) African Wild Ass (Equus africanus)
6) Red River Hog (Potamochoerus porcus)
Bats:
7) Long-haired Rousette (Stenonycteris lanosus)
Rodents:
8) Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus)
Carnivores:
9) African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus)
10) Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta)
I forgot to mention that I saw lions and wallabies my last visit as I forgot they counted
Marsupials:
11) Bennett's Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus)
Carnivores:
12) Lion (Panthera leo)

Stone Zoo - January 26th 2024
Due to the cold, I missed out on seeing animals like the bush dogs which were behind-the-scenes :(

Primates:

13) Mantled Guereza (Colobus guereza)
Ungulates:
14) Markhor (Capra falconeri)
Bats:
15) Seba's Short-tailed Bat (Carollia perspicillata)
Carnivores:
16) Grey Wolf (Canis lupus)

will have to think about whether to count animals from SDZSP's Asian safari area
I am fine with whichever way you decide :)

Thanks for your flexibility. I've decided to allow them: as they are visible through safaris that the park offers to anyone on a daily basis, I don't think they qualify as being "limited access" or "behind the scenes" even if easy viewing access to them is not included under the standard general admission.

An important note for others: since my decision qualifies them as "on display", seeing Asian safari animals from publicly accessible vantage points in the park (i.e. without paying for the safari tour) is an equally valid way of counting them.

Follow up question for further clarification on Mouflon, are we counting that as a typical Mouflon subspecies (ie Ovis gmelini) or as the domestic sheep (ie Ovis aries). In the end, it likely doesn't matter as I am not aware of any actual Mouflon in North America, but figured I'd ask just in case.

For now I'll say separate species (Ovis aries) since that is also how I chose to handle Dingo/NGSD.

Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) – Alameda Park Zoo 1/23

As they are all domestics, camels do not count - therefore you are at 8.

I saw a zoo animal yesterday from outside the zoo on a public walking path outside of zoo opening hours. Does this count?

It does not.

10-4, the Bactrian camel is scrubbed from my record. Thank you

Okay, finally time to start participating! January has been a historically rough month for a multitude of reasons, so no zoo trips happened. Hopefully this isn’t an omen for the rest of this year.

Prior to today’s visit, I counted 21 eligible species at Riverbanks Zoo, and I managed to see 19 of them. Not a bad haul. Red ruffed lemurs were off exhibit, but no idea where the harbor seal was.

I just got back from the North Carolina Zoo, which was the first facility I visited this year to have species eligible for this challenge, and I managed to see 20 of the 22 eligible species that they have. I missed two of their antelope (the Kudu and Bongo), and those are usually hard to see without a Zoofari tour.

As per usual, happy to correct any mistakes you might see - apologies if I have missed any from before. Just a reminder that I am doing this in all good fun, I am not hoping to add anything I might have forgotten about in efforts of malice, simply ignorance if it arises.

Clarifications:

Coyote, does that count? Often times are solitary but I understand they do move in packs often.
White Tailed Deer, I had though that would count? They are a congregational species after all.
I want to +1 Birdsandbats's request for seeing an animal from outside of the zoo. Only a true gamer knows how to see a species without paying the admission fee. We should be saving money in this economy.

Coyote should count since the rules state that all Canis species are eligible (Coyotes are flexible when it comes to social structures and they can and do form packs). White-tailed Deer should also be eligible per the rules, since the exclusions for ungulates wouldn't apply to them (and they do form small herds, speaking from personal experience).

Although that's ultimately up to @Coelacanth18 to judge, but the rules seem pretty unambiguous in these cases.

Coyotes and White-tailed Deer do indeed count.

I want to +1 Birdsandbats's request for seeing an animal from outside of the zoo. Only a true gamer knows how to see a species without paying the admission fee. We should be saving money in this economy.

Well see, that's exactly why I don't want that to be permissible; the intention with this game is for people to actually *visit* zoos, not come up with ways of getting around paying an admission fee.

I guess it's not particularly clear from the wording here, but FWIW my interpretation of:
4. All animals must be seen [...] in a public zoological collection [...] via normal public access
is that you also need be present *at* (i.e. not outside) the zoo you are counting the animal from.

(In case anyone asks: yes, sometimes zoos have animals intentionally on-display outside the entrance, and yes I consider that to be a different situation.)

Let's be real too, skipping a zoo admission fee is not a big money saver in this economy :p most zoo tickets are in the same price range as a single takeout meal from a decent restaurant - speaking as someone who orders takeout more often than they should!

Today I landed in Santa Barbara, California to begin what will be a week and half of going to zoos and aquariums from Monterey/Fresno down to San Diego/Palm Springs. Today after arriving, I hit the Santa Barbara Zoo and Santa Barbara Natural History Museum Sea Center.

Before getting into my list, I quickly need to note that my phone is being a serious pain in the a** right now and not allowing me to access my pictures from today no matter what I do. Because of that I am listing these species off memory while referencing the zoo's website and old species lists here (luckily the zoo is not that big and hasn't changed a ton so this isn't all that difficult). That being said, I may have an addition or two later on when my phone decides to work (this may not be until I'm back home and have the tools to access my SD card though). Everything below is what I can remember/confirm with 100% certainty.

Two more zoo visits today to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo and California Living Museum (CALM). Unfortunately, I struck out on seeing two species for this challenge that can likely only be seen at CALM (Nelson's Antelope Squirrel and Mexican Free-tailed Bat) despite spending a good 30+ minutes at those exhibits throughout my visit.

Marsupials: kangaroos and wallabies

Just to confirm, Common Wallaroo (Osphranter robustus) does not count, correct?

Anyways, my total is now at 82.

Just to confirm, Common Wallaroo (Osphranter robustus) does not count, correct?

"Kangaroos and wallabies" = Macropodidae = also wallaroos.

Also fun fact, Osphranter is the same genus Red Kangaroo is in - so a Common Wallaroo *is* a kangaroo :p

Unfortunately, I struck out on seeing two species for this challenge that can likely only be seen at CALM (Nelson's Antelope Squirrel and Mexican Free-tailed Bat) despite spending a good 30+ minutes at those exhibits throughout my visit.

Wish I'd know you were going, I could have saved you some time ;) I've visited CALM several times and I've only seen the bat once, when I happened to be there during its feeding time. The squirrel is hit or miss.

@Leaf Productions I also just realized that I already had you down for White-tailed Deer but was missing one of your other species - so you are at 39.

Gotcha, for some reason I thought you had said it was discounted lol. I'll add them on the next go-around once I add a new facility <3
