I have been researching Maned Wolf for a couple of years now and managed to find info on seven of the eight holders fairly quickly. Altina is the only holder I don't have a list for, and as they are the main holder, the list has come to a standstill. I will post what I know as it could still be of interest, and any corrections/additions would be appreciated.

Maned Wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) have been kept in Australia since 1982. By 2008 the population had dwindled and by 2009 all remaining individuals had gone to Altina Wildlife Park:

0.1 Esquivo (Chaco x Liz) 10/07/2002 at Dubbo
0.1 Luchador (Boroche x Ytamby) 30/06/2005 at Dubbo
1.0 Senna (Rocha x Liz) 13/07/2005 at Dubbo
0.1 Arapey (Rocha x Liz) 13/07/2005 at Dubbo
1

Altina subsequently imported three individuals:

0.1 Olinta (unk x unk) 00/00/0000 Imported 2009 from Riga Zoo, Latvia
1.0 Pepe (unk x unk) 00/00/0000 Imported 2013 from Nordens Ark, Sweden
0.1 Tepin (unk x unk) 00/00/2013 Imported 2015 from Pueblo Zoo, USA

In 2016 two-year-old male, Cruz, was destined for Altina from Abilene Zoo, USA but died of a heart attack before the import could take place.

Two female pups born at Altina in 2011 to Senna and Olinta were the first Maned Wolf to be born in Australia in six years:

0.1 Chiquita (Senna x Olinta) 00/00/2011
0.1 unk (Senna x Olinta) 00/00/2011

In 2012 Senna and Olinta produced a second litter:

1.0 Atreo (Senna x Olinta) 01/08/2012
1.0 unk (Senna x Olinta) 01/08/2012
0.1 Ninka (Senna x Olinta) 01/08/2012 (now at Adelaide)
0.1 Luana (Senna x Olinta) 01/08/2012

In 2013 Senna and Olinta produced a third litter:

1.0 Pacho (Senna x Olinta) 00/08/2013 (now at Crocodylus Park)
1.0 Rio (Senna x Olinta) 00/08/2013 (now at Crocodylus Park)
1.0 Chiko (Senna x Olinta) 00/08/2013 (now at Shoalhaven Zoo)
1.0 Lobo (Senna x Olinta) 00/08/2013

A second litter was born at Altina in 2013:

1.0 Sol (Pepe x Chiquita) 00/11/2013 (has left Hunter Valley for 'another zoo')
0.1 Bly (Pepe x Chiquita) 00/11/2013 (went to DDZ. Deceased.)
1 unk (Pepe x Chiquita) 00/11/2013 (deceased)

In 2013, Rocha, Luana and Ninka went to Hunter Valley Zoo. This group did not breed.

In 2014, Altina produced two litters:

1.0 Alpha (Pepe x Arapey) 06/06/2014 (deceased)
1.0 Iago (Pepe x Arapey) 06/06/2014
1.0 Juanito (Pepe x Arapey) 06/06/2014 (now at Adelaide)
0.1 Adora (Pepe x Arapey) 06/06/2014

1.0 Pepito (Pepe x Olinta) 00/00/2014
0.1 Lupa (Pepe x Olinta) 00/00/2014 (now at Darling Downs Zoo)

In 2014, Pacho and Rio went to Crocodylus Park.

In December 2015, Alpha and Juanito went to the National Zoo, ACT. Some time later, Alpha died and Juanito was returned to Altina.

In July 2016, Atreo and Chiko went to Shoalhaven Zoo.

In September 2016, Senna went to Adelaide Zoo, making them the sixth holder in the region. (Altina, Hunter Valley, Crocodylus, National Zoo, Shoalhaven, Adelaide)

In July 2017, Adora produced a litter at Altina:

1.0 Fane (unk x Adora) 00/07/2017 (now at Darling Downs Zoo)
0.1 Dahlia (unk x Adora) 00/07/2017
0.1 Eartha (unk x Adora) 00/07/2017 (now at Wildlife HQ)

In 2017 Tepin at Altina had a caesarean, delivering one male pup Estano, whose name was chosen because he born silver rather than the usual black. (Possibly due to fever coat, caused by high temperatures in the womb.)

1.0 Estano (unk x Tepin) 15/09/2017

In 2017, Ninka went from Altina to Adelaide.

In 2018, Olinta produced a litter at Altina:

0.1 Hija (unk x Olinta) 00/00/2018
(I'm not sure if there were others in this litter.)

In 2018, Dahlia and Eartha went from Altina to Wildlife HQ. (Eartha is still there, I'm not sure whether Dahlia died or was returned to Altina, but she is not at Wildlife HQ anymore.)

In 2018, Juanito went from Altina to Adelaide.

In 2019, a litter of four was born at Altina:

0.1 Delta (unk x unk) 00/08/2019 (now at Mansfield Zoo)
0.1 Quinta (unk x unk) 00/08/2019 (now at Mansfield Zoo)
1 Katja (unk x unk) 00/08/2019
1.0 Cisco (unk x unk) 00/08/2019

In 2020, Hija went to Hunter Valley and they produced their first litter:

1.0 Gomez (Sol x Hija) 11/07/2020 (deceased at five months of age)
0.1 Flora (Sol x Hija) 11/07/2020 (now at Altina)

In 2020, one pup was born at Altina:

0.1 Raina (unk x unk) 00/09/2020

In 2021, Flora went from Hunter Valley to Altina.

In 2021, Delta and Quinta went to Mansfield Zoo.

In 2021, Darling Downs Zoo produced their first litter:

1.0 (Fane x Bly) 03/07/2021
0.1 (Fane x Bly) 03/07/2021

Bly died from a snake bite in October 2021 and was replaced by Lupa from Altina. Both Bly's pups went to Altina.

In April 2022, Altina held 11 Maned Wolf.

In mid 2022, Altina produced a litter:

1.0 Eberado (Pepe x Tepin) 00/00/2022
1.0 Raul (Pepe x Tepin) 00/00/2022
0.1 Renata (Pepe x Tepin) 00/00/2022

In 2022, Darling Downs Zoo produced a second litter:

0.1 Solana (Fane/Lupa) 10/07/2022
0.1 Chica (Fane/Lupa) 10/07/2022

This timeline is not complete, but it's everything I have been able to gather.

This is a list of the current population, excluding Altina's animals as I don't have confirmation on which wolves are still there.

Great work @akasha.

Just a note that Adora’s 1.2 pups would have been born June 2017. There’s a photo of the triplets dated July 6 that shows all three with their eyes open (their eyes open around nine days old). From their size/development, I’d estimate they’re around 14 days old in the photo.

This is very interesting, thank you! I don't have any more info to add unfortunately, although Senna was transferred to Altina sometime after April 2010 - I recall seeing him at Dubbo then. I believe he was the last wolf at TWPZ and, as you've mentioned, went on to become a successful breeding male at Altina.

Maned wolf breeding season has begun:

A post on Altina’s socials mentions one of their breeding pairs is Pablo and Tepin.

As mentioned above, Tepin was born 2013 and imported from the US in 2015; I don’t know anything about Pablo’s origins.

Peak breeding season runs from April to July, with pups born June to September.

On the Altina tour I did on 21.09.2023, I was told Altina currently hold 13 wolves.

We’re just coming to the end of birthing season (June to September); and with birth announcements typically delayed a couple of months, we’ll hopefully hear some good news from Altina’s pairings this year. They’ve had phenomenal success with this species in the past.

Thanks to @steveroberts I have some new information on the first Maned Wolves at Altina. I will repost the timeline in it's entirety, with corrections and additions, for ease of reference. (Information up to 2014 is confirmed.)

(There is one discrepancy in the info I have compared to the studbook. I had the Swedish import Pepe as the father of the first 2014 litter (which makes sense), but the studbook lists Senna. I will choose to believe it's a bookkeeping error, rather than siblings being bred.)

Maned Wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) have been kept in Australia since 1982. By 2008 the population had dwindled and by 2009 all remaining individuals had gone to Altina Wildlife Park:

1.0 Rocha (Boroche x Ytamby) 30/06/2001 at Dubbo
0.1 Marmalos (Boroche x Ytamby) 30/06/2001 at Dubbo
0.1 Esquivo (Chaco x Liz) 10/07/2002 at Dubbo
1.0 Juarez (Boroche x Ytamby) 30/06/2005 at Dubbo
1.0 Don Juan (Boroche x Ytamby) 30/06/2005 at Dubbo

1.0 Senna (Rocha x Liz) 13/07/2005 at Dubbo
0.1 Arapey (Rocha x Liz) 13/07/2005 at Dubbo

Altina subsequently imported three individuals:

0.1 Olinta (Cezars x Olga) 08/12/2008 Imported 2009 from Riga Zoo, Latvia

0.1 Tepin (Meek x Cayenne) 23/02/2013 Imported 2015 from Pueblo Zoo, USA

In 2016 two-year-old male, Cruz, was destined for Altina from Abilene Zoo, USA but died of a heart attack before the import could take place.

Two female pups born at Altina in 2011 to Senna and Olinta were the first Maned Wolf to be born in Australia in six years:

@akasha When I first visited the Western Plains Zoo Dubbo a few months after it had opened in 1977 I saw a new exhibit that was signed for Maned Wolfs but never managed to see them, I assume they had them at the time?.

I don't think so, but I'm going to post a history of each zoo over the next few days, so that should answer any questions people have.

Yeah definitely no Maned wolves there in Western Plains Zoo's first years (and not until over 7 years after they opened) and definitely wouldn't of been an exhibit for them yet either or any signage for; not until shortly before the first arrived in 1984.

The first Maned wolf at Western Plains arrived in April (the 10th) '84: Wolfy 1.0 (b.15/9/80 Sao Paulo), he came via Taronga where he'd arrived 27/12/83.
2.1 more came June '85 and 0.1 in November '85.

(sorry Akasha, the rest of their population in Australian history story is yours to share to us when you are ready, cant wait to read).

This is excellent, thank you! From memory Dahlia was returned to Altina from Wildlife HQ due to suffering allergies which were exacerbated by the heat/humidity of Queensland.

History of Maned Wolf in Australia (Pre-Altina)

Perth Zoo (1981) was the first zoo in Australia to acquire and breed Maned Wolf, followed by Dubbo (1984) and Melbourne (1986). Adelaide Zoo (1992) exhibit Maned Wolf but never bred them. By 2011 all remaining Maned Wolf in Australia were sent to Altina. In the pre-Altina era, 13 founders were imported. Since 2009 Altina have added 3 more imports to the gene pool and distributed Maned Wolf to zoos all over Australia.

Perth Zoo

The first Maned Wolf in Australia were a pair imported from Berlin Zoo, Germany to Perth in July 1981.

1.0 Juan (166 x 167) 16/12/1980 (Transferred to Melbourne 1986)
0.1 Juanita (166 x 168) 01/02/1981

A male was imported from Dortmund Zoo, Germany in February 1982.

1.0 289 (92 x Dorle) 11/01/1981 (Exported to Kuala Lumpur 1993)

A female was imported from Marwell Zoo, UK in June 1984.

0.1 404 (222 x Donnah) 24/01/1983 (Exported to Singapore Zoo 1991)

Perth was the first zoo to breed them in Australia. The first litter was born in September 1983. The 4 pups did not survive.

0.0.4 (289 x Juanita) 11/09/1983

A second litter was produced in 1984. Only one of the four pups survived.

1.0 Rio (289 x Juanita) 14/07/1984 (Transferred to Dubbo 1985)

Two litters were born in 1985.

1.0 Don Quixote (289 x Juanita) 03/07/1985 (Exported to Kuala Lumpur 1988)
1.0 Arafat (289 x Juanita) 03/07/1985 (Transferred to Dubbo 1995)
0.1 Yosi (289 x Jaunita) 03/07/1985 (Transferred to Melbourne 1986)

1.0 Gaddafi (Juan x 404) 06/07/1985
0.1 Joan (Juan x 404) 06/07/1985

A litter was born in 1987.

1.0 Rapulo (Arafat x Joan) 01/10/1987 (Transferred to Dubbo 1995)
0.1 Capim (Arafat x Joan) 01/10/1987 (Transferred to Dubbo 1990)

Two litters were born in 1988. None survived.

0.0.5 (289 x 404) 10/07/1988
0.0.2 (Arafat x Joan) 21/09/1988

An eighth litter was born in 1989.

1.0 Steppen (Arafat x Joan) 07/08/1989 - 29/09/1990
0.1 Virginia (Arafat x Joan) 07/08/1989 (Exported to Kuala Lumpur 1993)
0.1 Kulkucan (Arafat x Joan) 07/08/1989 (Exported to Kuala Lumpur 1993)

Perth's final two litters were born in 1990. None of the pups survived.

0.0.2 (289 x 404) 25/06/1990
0.0.5 (Arafat x Joan) 27/06/1990

In 1995 the last Maned Wolves at Perth (Arafat and Rapulo) were sent to Dubbo.

By the end of their decade and half association with Maned Wolves, Perth Zoo had bred 32 pups, 10 of them surviving to maturity. Perth bloodlines survive in Australia through Senna and Arapey at Altina who are descended from Capim.

(Perth-bred male, Don Quixote sired a litter of 3 at Kuala Lumpur in 1991, none survived. Neither of the females that went to Kuala Lumpur bred.)

In 2011 Dubbo's last Maned Wolves went to Altina to restart the regional breeding program.

Over 27 years, Dubbo bred 32 Maned Wolf, 13 of them surviving to maturity. Dubbo bloodlines survive in Australia through Senna and Arapey at Altina. Their offspring are now at several Australian zoos.

(On a personal note, I had behind-the-scenes access in 2001 when Ytamby's second litter was about a month old. Keepers had 24-hour cameras recording the den and would meticulously record data about times that Ytamby attended the pups etc. After her unsuccessful litter the year before, they were extremely determined to have her successfully raise her pups. It's nice to know that Rocha from that litter went on to be an important part of the Aussie Maned Wolf population.)

Thanks again to @steveroberts for providing this data. And thanks to @Zoofan15 for helping out.

No problem @akasha, I was happy to help out.

Many thanks to you for your hard work in transcribing the data into a well presented list for us all to enjoy; and additional thanks to @steveroberts for sourcing it

So the first Maned wolves came to Australia in 1981!

I was also particularly interested to read over Melbourne Zoo’s records. The first time I’d ever heard of Maned wolf was reading through Melbourne Zoo’s 1992 guidebook as a child and seeing a photo of one there. Looking at the data, it wouldn’t surprise me if the photo was of Melbourne’s first male (Juan) since a male would make for a larger and more impressive specimen to photograph. The zoo’s guidebooks often recycled photos, meaning it could have been taken much earlier than 1992 (e.g. when he arrived in 1986).
