Zoochat Challenge North America 2025

Finally getting a few more points on the board with my other mainstay zoo. The only other facility I’ve visited so far this year didn’t have a single mammal.

  • Metro Richmond Zoo (03/29/2025) - 40 (Total 60)
  • Markhor (Capra falconeri)
Do you recall where this was at the zoo? I visited about 6 months ago and left with the conclusion that they no longer had markhor - they’d previously been kept with the tahr to my understanding, but I didn’t see them and their signage seemed to have been removed. I’ll be heading back at the start of July so I’d love to not miss it again.

Question: are we including porcupines in here? I didn't think so, but I saw one person did list a cape porcupine.

I have amended my master list to keep my numbers on track, removing manatee from my trip to Seaworld Orlando back in January. I have the full, correct list saved to my laptop, so I have it at the end if you need to double check anything!

They were visible from the Train Safari; as the train (really, tram) rounds the first 180-degree turn, they were visible off to the right in a separate enclosure. I saw about multiple males. Do note that they are technically not part of the tour, so the guide will likely not mention them unless asked.

The red-circled area in the image below is where I saw them. The train travels counter-clockwise through the loop. Look towards this area as the train rounds the bend. I have no idea how far that enclosure goes back, so it might be possible for them to move out of view.

Question: are we including porcupines in here? I didn't think so, but I saw one person did list a cape porcupine.

No, we are not. Sorry, I have not had the chance to go through people's updates the past couple weeks. To wit:

Greenville Zoo (04/06/2025)
44) Cape Porcupine (Hystrix Africaeaustralis)
34. North American beaver (Castor canadensis) - Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum 4/17

Neither of these species count - so @Mr. Bobcat you are at 46 and @iluvwhales you are at 34.

Everyone seems to be struggling with remembering what rodents count for some reason - so once again, the eligible species are:

Sciuridae (squirrel family)
Mole-rats (of any family)
Capybara and Mara

No porcupines, no beavers, no agouti, no rats or mice.

82.) Mohol bushbaby (Galago moholi)
80.) Feathertail glider (Acrobates pygmaeus)
88.) Caribou (Rangifer tarandus)

I already had you down for the bushbaby; the feathertail glider does not count (only marsupials we're counting are macropods) and the Caribou I'm assuming does not count because it would be domestic reindeer?
You also skipped 75 in your listing, so your actual total is 87.

Bright’s Zoo (04/19/2025)
47
) Owl Monkey (Aotus azarae)
48) South American (Ring-Tailed) Coati (Nasua Nasua)
49) White-Nosed Coati (Nasua narica)
50) Gemsbok (Oryx gazella)
51) Nyala (Tragelaphus angasii)
52) Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger)
53) Cotton-Top Tamarin (Saguinus Oedipus)
54) Golden-Headed Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas)
55) White-Fronted Capuchin Monkey (Cebus albifrons)
56) Tufted Capuchin Monkey (Cebus Apella)
57) Red-Handed Tamarin (Saguinus midas)
58) Red-Faced Spider Monkey (Ateles paniscus)
59) Waterbuck (Kobus Ellipsiprymnus)
60) Red River Hog (Potamochoerus porcus)
61) Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros)
62) Black And White Colobus Monkey (Colubus Guereza)
63) Black Backed Jackel (Canis mesomelas)

I wasn't sure if the Jackel counts even though they are sometimes considered a pack animal.
My numbering reflects removing the porcupine from my personal list.

63) Black Backed Jackel (Canis mesomelas)
I wasn't sure if the Jackel counts even though they are sometimes considered a pack animal.

Jackals do not count, no. They are now in Lupulella not Canis, and when I was doing my cursory research it seemed like they are frequently in mated pairs rather than true packs.

48) South American (Ring-Tailed) Coati (Nasua Nasua)
49) White-Nosed Coati (Nasua narica)

Coatis are not in the list of what counts either, though I admitted earlier:
Coati was an oversight on my part and probably could have been included, but we're already 3 months in so I'd like to keep the list as is

I would suggest re-reading my opening post, for what counts and does not count.

Sorry, my bad.
I will remove them from my list and re-number. I did read the original post but did not read every single following post. I included the Coati because I recently saw a documentary showing that they forage in large groups so I thought they could count. I work in IT and can be very busy and I don't always have the time to read every message I receive.

I do challenge the correction to my list a bit, as lesser galago and moholi bushbaby have two different Latin names. :)

I thought all Galago in US zoos were the same species, G. moholi? Which used to be considered a subspecies of G. senegalensis.
