New England Zoos Master plan Ideas and Discussion

Hello everyone, though I love most of my home zoos in New England, I’ve thought of ways to improve them in various ways. This thread is to show my ideas for improving the zoos of New England. I’ll post about each zoo every couple weeks with the first one being Capron Park Zoo which is coming out later today or tomorrow. I was inspired by several zoochatters’ ideas, most notably, @Neil chace

The first zoo I will improve is Capron Park Zoo, which is a 8-acre zoo located in Attleboro, MA. This zoo has historically had many rare and endangered species but recently, they’ve been decreasing their number of species. Now, they only have less than 50 species on exhibit, with many losses (most notably, “Vickie” the Sloth Bear, and the Visayan Warty Pigs) in the past years. The first thing I would do is replace the entrance building with a two-story building. The first floor would have several enclosures I’ll explain soon, a ticket booth, gift shops, restrooms, and a new cafe (accessible to non zoo-guests too). The second floor would have space for animal ambassador holdings, offices, and education rooms. After passing the ticket booths, there would be a terrarium housing two Attleboro natives, Eastern Garter Snake and Eastern Painted Turtle. In the new cafe, there would be a fish tank housing Banggai Cardinalfish, Goldtail Demoiselle, and Tapestry Turban Snail. These species would hopefully be pet rescues or they could be sourced from other AZA facilities. After exiting the entrance building, there is an indoor enclosure to your left side that’s connected to the building. It’s home to a species that used to be in New England collections until recently, Australian Little Penguin. On the second floor of the entrance building, there would be holdings for the animal ambassadors which would include species currently kept at the zoo, and some new, easily attainable species which is noted in the species list.

Entrance Building Species List (new species in bold)
  • Eastern Garter Snake, Eastern Painted Turtle - T. sirtalis, C. picta
  • Banggai Cardinalfish, Goldtail Demoiselle, Tapestry Turban Snail - P. kauderni, C. parasema, T. petholatus
  • Australian Little Penguin - E. novaehollandiae
Animal Ambassadors List (new species for the zoo in bold)
  • Sugar Glider - P. breviceps
  • Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth - C. hoffmanni
  • Nine-Banded Armadillo - D. novemcinctus
  • Domestic Chinchilla - C. lanigera f. domestica
  • Palawan Porcupine - H. pumila
  • Eastern Screech Owl - M. asio
  • Turquoise-Fronted Amazon - A. aestiva
  • Congo Grey Parrot - P. erithacus
  • Eastern Box Turtle - T. carolina
  • European Glass Lizard - P. apodus
  • Desert Rosy Boa - L. trivirgata
  • Australian Green Tree Frog - (R. caerulea)
  • Giant African Millipede - A. gigas
  • Chinese Mantis (T. sinenis)

The popular Splash pad will be expanded slightly. For the circular island that used to house Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur, I would have the smaller Collared Brown Lemurs which are more cold-tolerant. For the square island (current red ruffed lemur enclosure), I would have Crowned Lemurs. These species are more likely to be able to be outside during wintertime. In the former space of the Southern Screamer enclosure, there would be an aviary for Madagascar Ibis, Madagascar Partridge, and Red Fody, which are birds from the forests and wetlands of Madagascar. I would also construct an enclosure between the pond and the maintenance building, being home to Madagascar Miniature Zebu, a species revered in Madagascar.

Lemur Islands Species List (new species in bold)
  • Collared Brown Lemur (E. collaris)
  • Crowned Lemur (E. coronatus)
  • Madagascar Ibis, Madagascar Partridge, Red Fody - L. cristata, M. madagarensis, F. madagascariensis
  • Madagascar Miniature Zebu - B. indicus
I'll continue with some expansions for the zoo, this weekend. What do you think so far? Do you agree with my suggestions, if not, why? Any suggestions?

There would be a 3 acre expansion into the forest/hockey field part of Capron Park. This area would become the Arctic Adventure area.

Polar Bears would come back to the zoo and New England. Steller Sea Lion would be the other headliner of the exhibit, and this zoo would be one of 3 zoos in the USA to have. Visitors can view the animals both indoors (in a building), and outdoors. Inside the building, there would also be an aviary for Common Murre, Horned Puffin, Pigeon Guillemot, and Tufted Puffin. Next to this building, there would be an aviary for Snowy Owls, and an enclosure for Reindeer. All of these species would be seen year round. This area would be accessed by a path between Lemur Islands and the Lion Area.

Arctic Adventure Species List (new species in bold)
  • Snowy Owl (B. scandiacus)
  • Arctic Fox (V. lagopus)
  • Polar Bear (U. maritimus)
  • Common Murre, Horned Puffin, Pigeon Guillemot, Tufted Puffin - U. aalge, F. corniculata, C. columba, F. cirrhata
  • Steller Sea Lion (E. jubatus)
  • Reindeer (R. tarandus)

In the current lion, sloth bear, and domestic area, I would retheme it to be Inside Africa. I would expand the existing lion enclosure into the former sloth bear enclosure. With the remaining land, there would be a walkthrough aviary with Blue-Bellied Roller, Kenya Crested Guineafowl, Speckled Pigeon, Superb Starling, and Taveata Weaver. In the domestics area, there would be a savanna with Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Impala, and Thomson's Gazelle.

Inside Africa Species List (new species in bold)
  • Lion (P. leo)
  • Blue-Bellied Roller, Kenya Crested Guineafowl, Speckled Pigeon, Superb Starling, Taveta Weaver - C. cyanogaster, G. pucherani pucherani, C. guinea, L. superbus, P. castaneiceps
  • Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Impala, Thomson's Gazelle - B. abyssinicus, A. melampus, E thomsonii

I'm going back to the entrance area, and there is a medium-sized enclosure there. Currently, it's home to African Spurred Tortoise, Emu, and Red Kangaroo but they only have a couple individuals left. I would add some rocky outcrops, and hills as it used to be an Aoudad enclosure. This new enclosure would house Transcaspian Urial.

Transcapian Urial Area Species List (new species in bold)
  • Transcaspian Urial (O. vignei arkal)

If you're interested in realism, and a sort of "what would I do if I suddenly became director?" speculative masterplan, I think you'd struggle to do such an expansion into the neighbouring public park. I'm not sure how big the area is, but it looks like 3 acres would take up about a third of the existing public park?

Regardless, you may also want to consider how to incorporate the existing forest into the exhibits you build in that area.

Do you have any ideas of incorporating the forest into the exhibits? Capron already has a plan of expanding into the forest which I meant (not the park)

Perhaps a species that can make use of a wooded area. Sticking to New England, I thought Stone Zoo made good use of the forest in the wolf enclosure.

Maybe some other interesting carnivores of temperate woodlands like black bears, wolverines, or great grey owls would be interesting. Fishers might be interesting as well as local MA wildlife with quite a few local myths about them being dangerous and screaming at night, etc.

I’m deleting the arctic fox and reindeer enclosure. I’m going to replace them with an enclosure for Wolverine.

Updated Arctic Adventure Species List (new species in bold)
  • Snowy Owl (B. scandiacus)

  • Steller Sea Lion (E. jubatus)
  • Wolverine (G. gulo)
@LaughingDove , what is your opinion on the other sections of the zoo so far?

I think the polar bears, sea lions, blue penguins and even the wolverines are a stretch. The capron park zoo is a REALLY small zoo and it would be very hard for the zoo to fit a polar bear habitat and sea lions. Both are very expensive and require much land. The wolverines are hard to acquire like the others and need a lot of land too. Blue penguins are seemingly a phase out of the AZA due to their hard breeding and life cycle. Plus they would also be expensive for the zoo.

What should replace these species? Are any of the other animals implausible? I'm going to replace the wolverine with the native Fisher (P. pennanti), and I'm going to replace the sea lions with either Harber Seal (P. vitulina) or Grey Seal (Halichoerus grypus). I don't want to have subantarctic, Antarctic, African, and Humboldt Penguins because that would compete with nearby zoos (New England Aquarium, Franklin Park Zoo, and Roger Williams Park Zoo). I might replace that expansion with an exhibit starring Grizzly Bears or Sloth Bears

Maybe keep all the species but the bears, I just don’t find it likely that the zoo would waste so much of their land for polar bears. They are also already struggling with space (at zoo) so it would make more sense to make it into a grizzly exhibit and add more species like elk and keep the sea lions and wolverines.

Here is my edited draft so far.

It’s home to a species held behind-the-scenes at New England Aquarium, Atlantic Puffin On the second floor of the entrance building, there would be holdings for the animal ambassadors which would include species currently kept at the zoo, and some new, easily attainable species which is noted in the species list.

Entrance Building Species List (new species in bold)
  • Eastern Garter Snake, Eastern Painted Turtle - T. sirtalis, C. picta
  • Banggai Cardinalfish, Goldtail Demoiselle, Tapestry Turban Snail - P. kauderni, C. parasema, T. petholatus
  • Atlantic Puffin - F. arctica
Animal Ambassadors List (new species for the zoo in bold)
  • Sugar Glider - P. breviceps
  • Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth - C. hoffmanni
  • Nine-Banded Armadillo - D. novemcinctus
  • Domestic Chinchilla - C. lanigera f. domestica
  • Palawan Porcupine - H. pumila
  • Eastern Screech Owl - M. asio
  • Turquoise-Fronted Amazon - A. aestiva
  • Eastern Box Turtle - T. carolina
  • Eastern Glass Lizard - O. ventralis

In the former space of the Southern Screamer enclosure, there would be an aviary for Hadada Ibis, Madagascar Teal, and Red Fody, which are birds from the forests and wetlands of Madagascar. I would also construct an enclosure between the pond and the maintenance building, being home to Madagascar Miniature Zebu, a species revered in Madagascar.

  • Crowned Lemur (E. coronatus)
  • Hadada Ibis, Madagascar Teal, Red Fody - B. hagedash, A. bernieri, F. madagascariensis
  • Madagascar Miniature Zebu - B. indicus

There would be a 3 acre expansion into the forest surrounding Capron Park. This area would become the Boreal Forest area.

The main headliner of this exhibit is American Black Bears with bears returning back to the zoo, after a year or two. There would also be Fisher, Great Grey Owl, Moose and Harbor Seals (coastal animal). All of these species would be seen year round. This area would be accessed by a path between Lemur Islands and the Lion Area. This exhibit won't be competing with Stone Zoo's Yukon Forest for a reason I'll talk about when we get to that zoo.

Boreal Foreast Species List (new species in bold)
  • Harbor Seal (P. vitulina)
  • Great Grey Owl (S. nebulosa)
  • Moose (A. alces americana)
  • American Black Bear (U. americanus)
  • Fisher (P. pennanti)

  • Blue-Bellied Roller, Kenya Crested Guineafowl, Speckled Pigeon, Superb Starling, Taveta Weaver - C. cyanogaster, G. pucherani pucherani, C. guinea, L. superbus, P. castaneiceps
  • Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Impala, Thomson's Gazelle - B. abyssinicus, A. melampus, E thomsonii

I would add some rocky outcrops, and hills as it used to be an Aoudad enclosure. This new enclosure would house Transcaspian Urial.

Transcapian Urial Area Species List (new species in bold)
  • Transcaspian Urial (O. vignei arkal)

Could you please write out the scientific names?
For which species? I have them but simplified like here
  • Lion (P. leo)
  • Blue-Bellied Roller, Kenya Crested Guineafowl, Speckled Pigeon, Superb Starling, Taveta Weaver - C. cyanogaster, G. pucherani pucherani, C. guinea, L. superbus, P. castaneiceps
  • Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Impala, Thomson's Gazelle - B. abyssinicus, A. melampus, E thomsonii

Everything in the master plan (https://www.boston.gov/sites/default/files/file/2020/12/Landmarks Zoo Presentation 2.pdf) would happen with penguins and stuff. African Experience would merge with Kalahari Kingdom and Giraffe Savanna, still retaining its name. The theme would be mostly South and East African savannas and deserts. I would just move Lowland nyala to the waterhole enclosure.

I made my own master plan for Zoo New England. What's good? What's missing? What are the issues and mistakes that I should fix? All justifiable feedback is helpful. For ideas, please reply on this thread or private message me. I want this to be semi-realistic

Zoo New England Master Plan
What is the possibility of a third Zoo New England facility? Maybe in central or west Mass or cape cod. Potential expansion could be Roger Williams zoo (they have done some partnerships), buttonwood, Beardsley, Capron, etc. Feedback is very requested for the master plan. This thread can be used as a discussion for ideas

Please ask any questions and provide feedback.
Some things I was wondering:
  • Would any other vertebrates in Butterfly Hollow work? I know that there are typically wood ducks (I would move them to Bird's World) and common cooters (I would move them to Bird's world)
  • Are there any major breeding programs missing in this masterplan
  • How much space is available in Hoofstock Yards?
  • Are there any size limitations for any of my suggested replacements?
  • Would there be any better additions/replacements then the ones I mentioned?
  • How much space is available behind Bird's World and behind the Mexican Grey Wolf exhibit
  • Are there any other major issues
