Had a super lucky day at Frampton today with (hopefully) good shots of both Reed and Sedge Warblers - I was trying to get diving Terns and Reed warblers kept flying into my eyeline, a pleasant problem to have.

Thanks to the sightings map in the visitor centre I was able to find a good looking Pink footed goose among some Greylags too. Had some sort of caterpillar too on the path but the photos will have to be worked on to find out what on earth that was.

Turnstones at Titchwell the other day were the highlight of a busy reserve and my first chance to get them up close in flight. Had the first Cuckoo call and distant view of the year there too, very much hoping for another chance to get one of those in the lens this year.

Today turned out much better than I expected. It rained almost the entire morning, so I wasn't expecting to get any new birds for the day. Instead, I got four new birds (which weirdly seems like a trend based on my last few outings) and my highest warbler count for a single day. I ended with 9 species and tried to get to 10, but it was a little too late for anything new to show.

5/1/25

Updates from me. Recent highlights have included doing a very long day trip, three hours west near Goondiwindi for Greater Bluebonnets of which I saw many. I picked up White-eared Honeyeater and Jacky Winter as well which are long overdue. I’m still chasing a few Great Dividing Range species. White-spotted Eagle Rays off North Stradbroke Island and a fluke Squirrel Glider in the afternoon at a local bushland reserve have been lingering memories. I also went to Melbourne for a couple of days mainly for zoos and I tried to squeeze in some birding which was actually pretty poor probably due to warm autumn temperatures. I should have planned better but I still ended up with a lifer Collared Sparrowhawk just outside Melbourne Zoo clutching a small bird in its talons and the best sighting of Spotless Crake I’ve ever had as they fought out in the open at Newport Lakes among Hoary-headed Grebes. I won’t be travelling for the winter break (I think) but I will be starting to finalise a return to far-north Queensland for September for operation cassowary.

A small update from me. I recently participated in a frog spotlighting survey in the outer fringes of Brisbane, something I hope to continue, which added two new species of frogs including two endemic Green-thighed Frogs which are poorly understood and no one was excepting to see them into autumn. A bonus Greater Glider frozen high up in the canopy was a neat find so close to suburbia among all the frogs and huntsman spiders including a new one (invert #267). Additionally, after an absolute embarrassing search around Melbourne for Scarlet, Pink and Flame Robin, a local winter Rose Robin was brilliant to see among White-naped Honeyeaters and Fan-tailed Cuckoo at my usual patch at Enogerra Reservoir. I didn't get Rose Robin at all for 2024 so it was great to get one early in the season. For all things buggy, Green Jewel Bugs have been a much-awaited local target; beautiful little things I tracked down at the local park while looking at fungi. I also ventured back to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast a few weeks back for more rock pooling and was finally rewarded with lots of sea hares munching on the algae and a few new fish species.
