Australasian Cheetah Population

Really nice staff at Sydney Zoo confirmed Obi is still alive but at a different zoo/w.p of which they personally did not have details of. ''Obi was transferred to another wildlife facility recently, I am not privy to which one unfortunately. Obi was with them (Moyo, Mwindaji & Balozi) for a little while, separately, until the transfer was arranged. The youngsters are doing very well settling in, as I hope Obi is too at his new home.''
Interesting to know he wasn't transferred out prior to their arrival. Perhaps they attempted to introduce him to this coalition of males, but it just didn't work out and he's since been sent elsewhere as a result.

It'll be nice to know which facility he ended up at if you could find that out eventually. I know that will depend on other facilities responding though; but appreciate the effort!

New Cheetahs

Sydney Zoo have posted on instagram about three new male Cheetah’s arriving at the zoo, and resident Cheetah Obi moving to a facility. Nothing about where they’ve come from yet, or where Obi is going. Instagram post below:

New Spots & Sweet Goodbyes

We're thrilled to welcome three new cheetah boys! They've settled into their habitat and are already stealing hearts with their speed and charm.

At the same time, we're saying a fond farewell to our much-loved cheetah Obi, who will be leaving next Tuesday, April 29th to join the regional breeding program. Obi is a keeper favourite and will be deeply missed — but we're all so proud of him and this exciting new chapter.

Come say hello to the new crew and goodbye to Obi before his big move!

This was what Sydney Zoo posted on their socials lately in relation to Obi's move. It seems to imply that the move is for breeding, considering it's mentioned Obi is joining the breeding program - sure, zoos holding non-breeding surplus animals are part of the breeding program in their own way, but if looking at it through that lens, Obi would have already been in the program at Sydney.

Thanks heaps for sharing the info Abbey and @Tigergal, didn't see the Sydney Zoo news thread (goes to show should have checked, because they kept fewer cheetahs generally in comparison to Monarto and Dubbo etc, didn't check their news page).

The wording implies Obi has a breeding recommendation as you’re correct, all holders are part of the breeding programme irregardless of whether they have an active breeding recommendation; or hold non-breeding surplus. I’ve seen it used countless times in reference to a male animal we all know is going to life his entire life in a bachelor troop/herd etc.

Sydney’s exhibit is ideal for a coalition of males. The reduction of their previous coalition to a single male (Obi) makes him an ideal candidate demographically for breeding.

Thanks @Steve Robinson for confirming about Mrembo's arrival two days ago on 23rd May, and sorry to hear about Hasani passing in 2022 after veterinary treatment (not being able to recover from the anesthesia).

The keeper additionally added: ''We are pretty lucky and have quite a large facility for our cheetah with lots of yards, so we are able to move all the cats around quite regularly. This means the cheetah on the exhibit changes often as we move them all around for enrichment and depending on what is happening on section - breeding, training, medical, etc.''

27/5/2025: There are 66 cheetahs accounted for in Australasia - 34.32

Brilliant effort Steve. I'm glad to hear a lot of the zoos were transparent with you. I would love to see some updates for some of the other populations too. Rhinos, red pandas? If you want to of course.;)

My apologies for that. I had thought whistling kite had given you permission to give updates for all of his lists.

All good. No just cheetahs list (happy to handover). Can always make your own list and email zoos etc but, anyone can if have the time (but does take time, big respect to everyone who's done population lists etc).

Three cheetah cubs born
We're beyond excited to share some incredible news, three new cheetah cubs have been safely born at the centre!

Arriving on June Ist, these tiny newcomers, two boys and a girl are yet to be named, but one thing's for sure...they've already stolen our hearts. Their birthday will certainly be an easy one to remember, and a special date well celebrate for years to come.

This latest birth is a powerful testament to the way we manage our cheetahs and the strength of our conservation programs. Just like Edie, Ezra, and Darcie, these cubs are being raised with the goal of one day joining our unique rewilding program in South Africa, helping to restore cheetah populations in their natural habitat.

For now, the cubs are tucked safely in the den with mum and will remain off-display for the first few weeks of life.

And an update about Mirri, the clouded leopard cub:
Looking ahead, plans are underway for Miri to transfer to Europe later this year as part of the EAZA Clouded Leopard EEP (Ex-situ Program), a globally coordinated conservation program that supports the long-term survival of the species. We're proud to be the only organisation in Australia working with clouded leopards, and even prouder that our Director, Ben Britton, sits on the EEP species committee helping guide the conservation of clouded leopards worldwide.

Mirri's journey to Europe is likely to happen in October, so if you've been hoping to visit and see her in person, the next couple of months are your last chance before she embarks on this important international chapter.

We’ll continue to provide updates on her progress, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for this truly remarkable young cat.

Both updates from the WCCC Newsletter

Thanks so much for the news @Tigergal @akasha

18/06/2025: There are 69 cheetahs accounted for in Australasia - 36.33

This was reported on the previous page. The cubs were born June 1 and have been sexed as 2.1.

However, a more recent post from yesterday confirms the mother is Emmy @steveroberts.

Thanks heaps for the news @Zoofan15

Am guessing Duke is probably the sire again.

You’re welcome and I agree that seems likely. Females are highly selective about which male they breed with and Duke has clearly impressed Emmy in the past.

I recall Orana had a male named Jonah who was even selected by two different females against multiple other males/options.

Wild Cat Conservation Centre Cheetah Cubs have been named

From instagram:
Exciting news - our cubs have names! Meet Enzi, Eshe and Davu! They are growing so well, wrestling all day long and their favourite toys at the moment are mums ears

As previously discussed the cubs have been sexed as 2.1. My guess is that Eshe is the female, given that’s a name generally given to girls

Thanks so much Tigergal for sharing the news. They are realy nice names too. Am actually going to put Eshe down as the female cub of the trio for the pop' list because think you're right:
