Pairi Daiza Pairi Daiza News 2025

The Chinese Govt only announced these Snub-nosed Monkey deals earlier this year I think. Pretty sure Berlin was mentioned as the third zoo to receive them.

The China wildlife conservation association announced that 3 European zoos will get snub-nosed monkeys. Beauval was soon afterwards confirmed, Pairi Daiza started works on the enclosure, but the confirmation came only quite recently (although informally it was known they would get them). The third zoo isn't announced yet, but Berlin is considered a logical candidate.

Still hoping Ouwehands will get them

A big week for Pairi Daiza! Servals, mongooses and golden snub-nosed monkeys!
Also this week, a bald eagle chick hatched and a baby reindeer was born.

Also some more information about the sanctuary (got this from facebook, from a source that is very close to the park and is almost always honest, but still keep this in mind, I am going to put the pictures here because these things sometimes get deleted since PD wants to remain very secretive)
A map of the sanctuary:
Seems like there will be a cliff (Andes/ coastal cliffs??) Waterfall (like Burgers' Bush?) Beach (Don't know what to expect of this) Rain forest (Amazon?) Dry forest (Caatinga?) Riverine (Amazon river?)

Zoom in on the open doors (seems like it is going to be ready soon!:D)

We visited for the first time in April from the u.k. staying in the hotel, and it quickly became 1 of our favourite places in the world. Seeing the construction we asked about what was happening and was told it was an Amazon rainforest with a water park opening at a later date, but there will also be a hotel with underwater rooms inside a shark tank.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, I havnt read through all posts on here.

Is there a chance to spot short-beaked echidnas in the koala house?
It’s quite hard to spot them because they dig themselves under the ground and you also need to have a volunteer there otherwise the house isn’t open. (You can’t see them from the balcony) I went 2 days in a row recently and didn’t see the echidna there but there was a volunteer each time around 10:30.

Went to Pairi Daiza today, some updates:

  • 3 new species were in the rescue center at the entrance:
- a Hermann's tortoise
- a python species (looked like reticulated but not sure)
- a Pantherophis species (most likely corn snake)
  • It seems that only one rufous hornbill is left. Maybe the other one is backstage but since the birds are over 20 years old it's likely that the other has dead.
  • When I stepped into the Tropicalia house today I was amazed to not only find the sunbitterns showing off (look up sunbittern open wings on google to see what i mean), the sloth passing right over my head, and the African jacana beautifully sitting in the bushes, but also lots of new birds! (likely going to move to the sanctuary in a few months, some aviaries are now a bit stocked) Here's a list of all the species I saw that aren't on ZTL (I'll add them tomorrow):
- Golden-breasted starling (Lamprotornis regius): free roaming
- Chestnut-eared aracari: back on show, same aviary
- Blacksmith Lapwing (Vanellus armatus): same aviary as the aracaris
- Crested partridge (Rollulus rouloul): previously empty aviary on the opposite side of former BoP aviary
- Blue-bellied roller (Coracias cyanogaster): together with the roulroul
  • They finished repainting the left side of the buddhist temple and were busy on the squirrel side, but when I came back later in the afternoon all barriers were gone (Does paint dry that fast???)
  • There were tortoises in one of the three dorcopsis exhibits. It looked like Hermann's tortoise but I am not entirely sure. This is likely because of the overload the Mersus Emergo is facing right now
  • Underwater viewing for hippos is open again
  • Saw the serval exhibit for the first time. It was bigger than looked on pictures or what I expected. I was positively surprised.
  • The mongooses that arrived a while ago are already mixed with the red river hogs and on-show.
  • Works on the gibbon addition to the elephant plains are progressing quite fast. My only concern is that the indoor holding for the gibbons will be too small (it's about the size of a bull elephant)
  • A window of the sanctuary was open... there were plants visible that looked like bamboo and mock rock that was as high as the wall. This is likely the Cliffs section I saw a preview of :p
  • And one more note: the Mersus Emergo seems to be dealing with a huge influx of reptiles. Of course these are surrendered/confiscated pets etc. and PD has no other option but to take them in but still... where once was one anaconda in an already small exhibit are now 3 anacondas.. This is i think also the reason random reptile exhibits keep popping up all over the zoo (Japanese garden, tortoises mixed with chickens, African village, Tortoises mixed with sheep, The above mentioned dorcopsis exhibit inhabitants, the lakes in front of the aquarium, the Oasis, the Crypt...) I hope the new sanctuary will include at least some reptile exhibits so the burden is eased. There are more than 3000 of those annoying sliders ALONE for example... Since the 19th of may, I read on the information board, they received 4 more red-eared pond sliders, a european pond turtle and 2 false map turtles. I wonder what the true size of PD's reptile collection actually is, it must be one of the largest of europe in terms of number of animals at least!

When I was adding the new species I saw yesterday to ZTL, I saw that ZTL lists the Long-tailed Glossy-Starling, Common bronzewing, Emerald Starling as being in Tropicalia since 2025, but I didn’t see any signage or spot the birds there. Does anybody know more about this?

The Blue-ground doves that were added to ZTL are apperently in the Oriole aviary, which is possible since I didn't really look at that aviary.

Thiswould mean that the influx of new species is even bigger than I thought yesterday. Certainly a large part of these species will go to the sanctuary, since now it's getting really overcrowded in that small greenhouse!
