Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2025

I was at the zoo last weekend and I noticed the Crocodile Newts weren't on exhibit and whatever creates the humidity for their exhibit was turned off, I believe they were still present as of June 14th does anyone know if they were of just doing a health check out is this another phase out?

From Calgary Zoo:

From Toronto with love! We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome ‘Johari’, a 24-year-old western lowland gorilla, to our troop!

Recommended under the AZA’s Species Survival Plan, Johari joins us from The Toronto Zoo as a hopeful future breeding partner for our silverback ‘Jasiri’. With her playful spirit and love of accessorizing (just like ‘Dossi’!), she’s already winning hearts behind the scenes.

Cherished by Toronto Zoo staff, volunteers, and community for nearly 25 years, Johari now begins a new chapter here—and we’re honoured to carry on that care.

While she won’t be viewable just yet , you can follow along for updates as she settles in and begins her gradual introduction to the rest of the troop.

I’ve known the location of Johari‘s move for sometime, and I have to say, I am quite happy that it’s Calgary. Their silverback, Jasiri, is the 13th most genetically valuable in North America. Still not quite as good as Jawara from Granby (Who is the third most valuable and strongly speculated to be the next silverback for Toronto), but absolutely no slouch in the genetic value department by any stretch.

I also suspect that this is part of what will be a long term plan to potentially get Johari back to Toronto. It’s been mentioned on here before, but Toronto‘s staff strongly did not want to send her out. However the fact of the matter is, she is 24 years old and the 9th most genetically valuable female gorilla in North America, and she has never bred before. The clock is absolutely ticking for her and she really should’ve had her first offspring a decade ago.

I suspect that Johari will return to Toronto with an offspring, once Jawara heads over to be their new silverback. Given the age and social structure of the four male gorillas at Granby (all adults living in two separate social units of two each), they will likely need to transfer out Jawaras social partner and half brother, Zwalani, to a facility in the states to lead either a breeding troop or bachelor group of younger males. As we all know here, a transfer to the states can take years, so even if the wheels are turning on that, it’s likely still a year or two off at the quickest.

This is just speculation on my part, but I will not be at all surprised to see the Toronto social structure remain as it is for the next year or two until the new Silverback arrives, and then at some point in the next 6 to 8 odd years, we see Johari return, but with an offspring or two of her own.

I think they replaced the glass and made some minor tweaks but they are back in their now. And I never knew how many we had until the new glass was put in and there's so many!

Personally, given the fact she has never bred at Metro Toronto Zoo she should never be coming back to the zoo ... Period! I would be much happier that she stay permanently in Calgary and breed with their silverback and be integrated into their troupe.

It will also open up opportunities and possibilities in MetroZoo Toronto to make the necessary changes in their breeding group designed to help them back to forming a new gorilla family in the zoo and get in some fresh genes to the current troupe ...

The only reason that Johari never bred was because her father, Charles, was the silverback.

Now that a new silverback will be arriving (albeit perhaps with a slight delay), there's little reason to not eventually send her back unless she confidently settles herself in the Calgary troop in the meantime.

Dolf posted this on his IG - possibly some new Kids Zoo residents?.

I agree. Likely in the barn in the kids zoo. The rabbits there can easily move to another exhibit. Will wait until see once they clear quarantine.

We cannot forget the two Snow leopards cups (Zoya and Minu) are slated to move to Akron.
Apologies for replying to an old post, but do you know if these two leopards are still destined for Akron? They just began their snow leopard exhibit renovation and I can imagine they'll bring in new leopards so it's not just old man Tai Lung inside all day and not using the new exhibit.

Does anyone know the names of the golden lion tamarins that are left? I believe there are three. Also does anyone know what happened to the others - there used to be two groups and now there is only one

There should still have Carrie, David, and Pickles(Golden Lion tamarin)(From the Toronto Zoo names thread). Kat and Dill moved to the Zoo Granby around 2023-2024.

My understanding is there may be some more moves coming, as they are all currently related. However I think the moves planned are all cross boarder with the states, so who knows how long that will take.
