Zoochat Big Year 2025

Well haven’t I been awful at tracking my Big Year this year! It’s been a very busy year for me and I’ve not had all that much time for birding (or zoos even, really) so my list will be a bit lackluster compared to the past couple of years. Spring birding in CT was bizarre this year. The foliage grew in early which made finding singing passerines difficult, so a lot of my usual birds were heard-only. Additionally, a lot of birds seemed to have arrived early and passed through quicker than normal. All in all, a much quieter season for all CT birders, though I still managed three long sought-after lifers.

Most recently I spent a week in Maine with my fiancé’s family. While this was not a wildlife-watching trip, I did spend a couple days out birding. One of the days, I visited the small mountain town of Rangeley, which is supposed to be a very excellent spot for a lot of boreal birds such as Ruffed Grouse, Grey Jay, and Black-Backed Woodpecker with decent odds of Bicknell’s Thrush if you go high enough, and small odds of Spruce Grouse. It’s also one of the most popular towns to go moose-watching. Unfortunately, the weather turned out pretty miserable and I missed out on pretty much every single one of my target birds after 7.5 hours of birding starting at 5am (and I had woken up at 2:45am to make the drive up there…). The best I got was a brief and unsatisfying flyover of one lifer on Saddleback Mountain. On the bright side, the mammal watching was pretty good. My next Maine birding day was a puffin cruise to Eastern Egg Rock, the site of America’s first seabird reintroduction. That day turned out to be more fruitful.

Where and how did you get American Barn Owl?

I find myself in Jakarta with a few days to spare, so am taking at trip to Pekalongan in Central Java, nearby which are to be found five of the six non-human primate species found in Java. I left this morning and was meant to take a train that would have taken 4 hours and which left at 7.15. Unfortunately, due to a derailment on the track the train was cancelled. Cars were organized as a replacement but that meant I did not get here till 4pm. However, the change did allow for some birdwatching at stops along the way.

Central Java Trip Day 1 continued.

The tour is run by a primate conservation NGO (more details later), and the first night is devoted to looking for one of their prime target species, the Critically Endangered Javan slow loris. After dinner we headed off to search in the hills about an hour south of Pekalongan. Things went extremely well with stunning views of all five species seen, including the flying squirrel gliding. We were on our way back within an hour and a half of arriving in the hills. A top rate evening.

Had a little mini road trip round a few local-sites around the wild borderlands(/ex-industrial fringes) of Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire today.

The Derbyshire site near Holymoorside let the side down but I was able to add a species each from Adwick Washlands in South Yorkshire and Idle Valley in Notts - where I also got some UK Green Sandpipers for the list (previously seen in Austria), so the UK counter advances by three.

Birds:
183. Western Yellow Wagtail - Motacilla flava
184. Wood Sandpiper - Tringa glareola

(UK: 178)

Couple of nice birds, one late identification from a recent trip and the other a garden moment today. There are Sparrowhawks here, a breeding pair judging by the juveniles. I had one in the garden during Storm Darragh last December and have seen a few kills since. Was about to go out and feed the birds and there was a Sparrowhawk sitting on top of the feeders. Managed to grab the camera and sneak out as it went down to the ground for a bird it had killed, so hope the shots come out! Amazing to get close up views.

Some insect photography at Bempton offered some interesting views of bees and their mimics.

Mammals
18. Javan colugo Galeopterus variegatus (new Order and Family)
19. Javan slow loris Nycticebus javanicus CR
20. Javanese flying squirrel Iomys horsfieldii

Birds

Central Java trip day 2.

The organization running the tour is Primavest, the ecotourism division of the SwaraOwa Foundation. They work in the local habitat and communities to support conservation, in particular in this region of the Javan slow loris and the silvery gibbon.

The foundation works around Mendolo village to support slow loris habitat. They promote forest agriculture here, encouraging durian cultivation, shade coffee and honey production using native bees. The forest here is obviously not pristine but seems to suit slow loris.

Day two is about birds. We spent the morning around Mendola village (actually a complex of four villages). The highlight were the pin-tailed parrotfinches, which we saw in good numbers. We were lucky they had come out of the forest to feed on ripening rice in a paddy field.

Mammals
21. Black giant squirrel Ratufa bicolor NT
