Zoo Hodonín Zoo Hodonín news

Yes, it seems like translation mistake.

Hodonin zoo runs its own dog shelter. The shelter´s got demolished by tornado and currently the zoo constructs a new one (for 1,5 mio euro) with capacity of 31 dog kennels. (BTW several other Czech zoos own shelters that accept and rehome homeless dogs, cats and other pets.)
Sorry, @Jana and @xmoose, I was not thinking straight after reading the Czech report. The dog shelter is back of house and outside the main zoo. Should have changed the "wild" to "domestic" dogs. Mea maxima culpa!

The recently assembled pair of Red-mantled saddle-back tamarin (Leontocebus lagonotus Syn.: Saguinus fuscicollis lagonotus) produced twins but one of them died. Thus they carry just one baby around.

A baby Collared Mangabey has been born last week.

This species was completely absent from Czech zoos for several decades. Hodonin received a pair last summer (16-years old male from Münster and 12-years old female from Barcelona) and this is their first offspring.

Two pairs of European roller arrived from France and Germany.

Blue-throated macaws are no longer in the collection. They got replaced by a pair of eclectus parrots (no subspecies mentioned).

The zoo accepted a 10-months old female cotton-top tamarin that has been seized by authorities from illegal breeder (all primate/monkey owners in Czechia need a special licence to keep them). She´s got paired with a resident 6-years old male. She has visible motoric and coordination problems and is bad at estimating distances when she travels around.

Two immature male Greater flamingos arrived from Jihlava zoo last month. With them, Hodonin keeps a flamingo group of 17 males and 16 females. This group breeds only occasionaly, with zero chicks in 2024. (if you want to see entire history of this group, check ZTL)

In December, a construction company will take-over the area of future aquarium, construction works should commence early next year. Fingers crossed it wont see further delays.

Next week, a reconstructed children playground will open.

The litter of 3 Barbary lions is still kept bts. After two previous failures of the young lioness to raise her cubs, the zoo is extra autious and lets her with cubs isolated from visitors and the male for 2 months. They could go on show in the middle of November.
