Chester Zoo History of Chester's Lions

Chandani and Jake = Original pair... 13 cubs (1994 (0:3 born), 1996 (3 born),1997 (4 born), 1998 (2:1 born))

Cubs that are still in the UK include: Chandra (Cotswolds) Asoka (Chester) Gir and Kamelesh (Edinburgh) Assok (Chessington)

Subu (Chandra's brother) went to the Cotswolds but died in 2007
Masala ('98 female) at Parken zoo
Naseek ('98 male) was housed at Helsinki zoo?

As far as I'm aware, all the cubs have produced cubs of their own, making the Chester group, the most prolific and well represented set of Asiatic Lions

For more info, look at ASIATIC LION, Asiatic Lions India, Gir Lion, Asiatic Lion Habitat, Lion Animal, Lion Tiger There is info on all the lions in the breeding programme, updates (occassionally) and photos

many thanks paul, do you know when chandani died?

Yeah me too, they where an impressive pair of lions. I went the zoo in June 05 just after Chandani had died, i was gutted. Even though i like Asoka and Asha, it doesnt seem the same though, there isnt as much legacy, if u know what i mean. Chandani and jake were a faultless pair of lions.

yeah i know everybody in the forum says they like the lion exhibit and whilst i agree its good i think it could be made better, do you know what happened to Chandani after she died?

I presume an animal autopsy was done on her which would have found she died of old age, although i think, a cat of her age, possibly kidney failure, although no statement was made beside 'she died of old age'. then i think she would have been cremated like all other animals, to prevent disease

oh right ok its just i heard sometimes the zoo animals are given to museums etc when they die just wondered if that had been the case here.

I think it all depends on the rarity and demand for the animals. As far as i know, chester havent donated any animals for museums. Balckpool zoo had an elephant put down for a tv crew to do an animal autopsy on her... ok the animal was sick, but it seems a bit coincidental that she dies while the crew are doing the autopsies and they wanted an elephant.

yeah thats terrible, is that the one that is going to be on channel 4 with an autopsy of a giraffe aswell?

That Blackpool would have an 40 year old elephant put down for the convenience of the media.....isn't that bordering on slanderous!?!?!?

Not really... tv crew wanted an elephant, a sick elephant is euthanised on 'health grounds', and then its conveniently revealed an elephant is part of the autopsy line up?

Im not saying it was done intentionally, i'm just saying its worked very well for scheduling

Can you not see where Hyak2 is coming from thou?

I thought that the elephant hadn't passed but they where considering doing autopsy once one did pass away? So when did this elephant die?

I think that was what was going to happen, heard no more on her actual death.

The problem with the elephants at Blackpool is they are used to entertain the public with tricks like circus elephants also the reports that the use fo cattle prods and the like have not put their management in a good light.

 When was this? Because surely this is still not the case?

A CAPS report was posted in 2002 on their website regarding the use of electric cattle prods, but the elephant encounters are still put on as far as I'm aware, this is were the elephants are trained to little tricks and the reason for this is enrichment and training as quoted by the zoo.
I am not trying to be negative with Blackpool Zoo as we all know nothing is perfect but it is this sort of thing that helps drum up the anti zoo lobby support.

This is akin to the old adage about never having a road accident within 50 miles of the organ transplant hospital in Cambridge.
