Really impressive Meaghan! Must have taking a while to gather all of them! I wonder why the zoo saw it as a better choice to bring in Sumatran tigers instead of having White Bengal tigers, interesting.

addition to above... The marine room in the americas looks to be almost complete, all they have is garbage bags covering the display windows, and they were blowing all over the place so I got a chance to see inside, hopefully it will be open during my next visit probably in late April. I think part of the reason on some of the partial renos of this pavilion is to scale down what they are doing when the do the conversion or to update the look a bit so when the Tundra Trek opens it dosn't look so run down.

Wow, I didn't think they were going to start on the Americas pavilion for a few years. Great to hear it's being worked on; when I was there last, the octopus was off display. Does anyone know what exhibits will be there?

Thanks for the head's up :)

I actually think my post was in the wrong fourm. I think it was supposed to be an addition to the Tundra Trek post I did. :| I don't think they are actually renovating the Americas Pavilion just upgrading facilities that will be kept once the do the conversion. The octopus will probably be back aswell as the other exhibits that are closed off in the Americas Pavilion.

Does anyone happen to know how the original plans for the African Savanna were scheduled to be. By this I mean, what cutbacks were made and were there any cancelled species? The one thing that would have been nice is more reptiles and an aviary of some sort

I remember an additional species to go with the Greater Kudu, impala, etc. For some time there was an extra sign space there, unless I'm thinking about another exhibit in the savannah section. They had a sign for the White-headed Vulture so I don't think it was for him.

Oh! And some past animals I remember off by heart, VERY briefly, roadrunners (I'm pretty sure that's what they were), were kept in the Prairie Dog exhibits. I think the Prairie Dogs themselves were off display at the time; there was a sheet over the glass and I was only able to see them through a space where the sheet wasn't covering the glass.

I think there was also an impala ram, unless I'm thinking way back to the Thomson's Gazelles they once had.

I know they had thomson's gazelle in with the impala as I've seen a video from 2000 when one was chasing an impala

Do you have a link to the video? I don't recall ever seeing gazelles at the zoo?

Wow, have the exhibits ever changed! The gibbon exhibit doesn't look anything like it is now! Can anyone tell which animal the "A little furry critter" picture is of? I wish we had penguins still. I really hope the zoo aquires them to go in the current seal exhibit.

The video was actually on Zoo Diaries as a short clip beetween the scenes

I gotta check my PVR and VHS recordings, then :)

They really do look different. Although there's room for improvements, the gibbon enclosure looks so much better now. The Malayan Tapir used to share the exhibit with them. The "little furry creature" is the Chinese badger.

Here's some more!
