Don't trust the chimps!

I actually caught 10 minutes of Oprah when the victim was on (the only time I've watched Oprah in the past few years:)) and the injuries were enough to just about give me nightmares. Absolutely horrific damage from the chimpanzee.
 
It shows how much damage a chimpanzee can do and emphasises why primates generally should not be kept as pets. Chimpanzees are classed as one of the most dangerous species in some zoos, this shows why.
 
such a shame that a beautiful animal like this had to live in a house! whilst i dont agree that primates kept privatly should be baned, they seriously need to introduce a similar system to the DWAL that we have in this country, a license that means only primates can be kept under the right conditions e.g a VERY large enclosure, in a group and only with people who have the correct knowledge of how to keep such an intelligent animal.
amazing that it doesnt happen more often in america, and that people can go around buying a large primate, dress it up and keep it in a cage in a house!:mad:
i feel for the women whos horrificly injured but if you play with fire one day your gona get burnt

oh dear! my empathy goes out to Charla, I hope she gets better soon.
I've watched a few docos on chimps they've all covered the brutality they can inflict.

She was an employee of the chimps owner, and had warned her many times. It was the owner who played with fire, and all the more unjust that it was not her who ultimately got burnt.
 
Chimps are one of the few animals I don't like, and this doesn't help.
 
Agreed, evil things are chimps. I'm curious to know what the injuries on her face looked like but I imagine I'd probably regret it after I'd seen it...
 
Does anyone know which qualifications the owner had which could have justified her owning an animal with the same muscular power in its arms as 10-12 adult men and teeth like those in big cats?
 
This is so unfortunate. There was a race car driver in CA a few years ago who was severely mauled by 2 chimps from the entertainment industry that were living out the rest of their lives at a sanctuary. He and his wife was visiting their "pet" chimp, who had been confiscated because he bit someone, and these 2 chimps got loose from their cage and bit off his nose, toes, fingers and genitals. He was in an induced coma for a long time before he went home.
 
Tragic all around, both for the woman who was attacked, and for Travis. No sympathy for the owner who has no business owning a pet rock, let along a social, complex animal which should not nor ever should be considered a "pet."

Chimps aren't evil - can any animal be described as evil? It's a shame you think that as negativity towards this species is one major offshoot of this womans story. They can be aggressive animals in the wild so obviously can be in captivity as well and for that reason there should be legislation in every country to prevent people keeping them in their own home, without the company of other chimpanzees, and with not enough knowledge of their needs.
 
I'm not just basing it on this, I've worked with chimps, they are evil lol. They're like the chavs we get in Britain only stronger ;)
 
I don't think you can realistically apply the concept of 'Evil' to any species apart from Humans. Certainly Chimpanzees can be many other things; dangerous, unfriendly, very unpredictable, at times highly aggressive and violent, but conversely;also highy social, intelligent and friendly.

Of course, keeping adult Chimps, however humanised, as pets in people's homes is asking for trouble. These horrific attacks are unfortunately the net result of such folly. Chimpanzees will attack each other in similar fashion too- as anyone who has read Jane Goodall's books will know, so this is really only an extension of behaviour that can occur in the wild, albeit in this case the Chimpanzee has a much weaker adversary(a human being) than itself so it can potenially inflict much worse damage.

BTW- shouldn't this be in the General Forum?

Fine, they're not "evil" but they're not exactly a nice species to work with!

I have also worked with chimps and wholeheartedly disagree with you. I found that each has their own character and some are prone to being more aggressive than others but one of the best individual animals I have ever worked with was a female chimp who trusted me and vice versa to a high level. Another individual was one of the most gentle males and he was kept with humans when young.

Each to their own I suppose, I just really don't find it useful to label animals with attributes that can only truly be applied to people (give me any chimp over a chav any day!)

Yes. I have worked with chimps and I can't say they are my favourite animals. But they certainly are very dangerous and that is no mistake.
