Bit of sad news I found out from Colchester was that one of the female wolves born to Tallauh called "Astria" passed away under anesthetic in september. The pack now stands at 10.

8 males: Tip-Toes, Scottie, Little-Star , Ebony , Dakota , Kenai , Montana and Akila

2 females: Tallauh and Two-socks

Well these things happen:(. But hopefully this wolf pack will continue to develop. Colchester has been so successfull with this species.:)

Yep thanks monkeyworld, I thought there used to be more. Little-star or star as he is commonly known as is the lowest ranking pack member.

Well at the moment Colchester can't breed from their wolves as they are all related - to expand the pack in the furture they would need to bring in a new female or a new male.... my bet in the near furture bring in a new female

You are asking us the question of what they will do with them,I would have thought you already knew that;)

I realy don`t know what they would do with a group of hybrid Timber Wolves because as far as I know there isn`t any pure Timber Wolves in the U.K.

I think they will keep all the pups as they make a really active and intresting exhbit and when the time is right bring in a new female or swap their two current females for two un-related females.

Thats about the only option that I can see because I don`t know any collection that wants Wolves.

Had a quiet short but quiet and icy visit to Colchester Zoo.

Saw the new Amur Leopard extention and I'm impressed with it. He was pacing on the icey platform in his current enclosure as though he was excited to come along into it.

Saw the baby pygmy hippo in the water, Oapal is now looking heavily pregnent. Does anyone know how she's coping with it?

Also saw Rajang he was pacing in his main indoor area with bits of apples getting stuck in his long hairs. He later posed for some phtographs from a couple of old women.:) Tiga was in the doorway bettween inside and outside.

Opal is coping okay as far as I know. I shall email and see next week.

Rajang was doing this when i went too. He seems to be stocking up his own little supply of food for later :D

Good ol' Rajang! :D When I went on the 23rd I noticed a huge infestation of field mice in the orangs main indoor area- this was at about 7 so I don't know if the keepers know about it !
Were the tamarins/marmosets still in their enclosure at the leopards area or has this been made into part of the new leopard enclosure?
Did you find out what is happening in the Snakes and Lizars building?

Tamarins are still there and no, this area will not house the leopards,

Snakes and lizards is being revamped, so i'm guessing maybe a discovery centre or a smaller version of worlds apart.

Was there 27/28th - saw the mice too, the keepers are aware of them, as you said, there are a few!! Rajang was extremely lively and climbing onto the top level for food quite nimbly - he seems to be more perky since Tiga arrived. I did the Keeper for the Day - it was fantastic - Rajang was so co-operative and loved the attention! Tiga is definately coming out of himself and wandered around without his head gear a few times!! My partner adopted Tiga for me for Xmas, so they are both my adoptees now!!! :O) Picked a very cold day though and the Lemurs weren't so keen to come out for long!!! Spent time with the chimps also, did enrichment feeds for them and the spider monkies.

We had a chat to the Amur Leopard Keeper who said that Dende was not now leaving Colchester and finally saw Sayan - what a beautiful leopard he is! The new enclosure is well on the way and looks impressive.

Saw the baby hippo - what a sweetie and Zamba was running around outside having a great time. Igor and Anoushka also enjoying a walk around in the cold - shame the snow had gone though as it would have been great to see them in it.

Hopefully our new visit will be timed with Opal's new arrival! :D

The mice are now being sorted by staff :D

As for Dende, haven't heard anything about him not leaving. Did the keeper you spoke to mean not moving yet or not moving at all?

Pleased you enjoyed yourself Andii. I didn't see any mice 2 days ago on my last visit. Hopefully its all sorted.

I saw several Rats on my last visit. They were popping in and out of a hole under a boulder in one of the Bird Aviaries and going to the food dishes..

 Is this serious? Has this problem ever happened elsewhere?

Yeah there are many down the old part of the zoo where the capuchins and sayan are now kept. You cant really help rats getting into zoos, i should think it happens everywhere. I supose poisen cant be put down for obvious reasons. As long as there is food and a hidy hole there will be rats and mice unfortunatley.

anyone know why colchester have moved some of their patas monkeys?

The group has been 2.1 for a bit now and i dont know why they have moved them.
