Colchester Zoo Subu the lion dead?

Someone has posted on fb that Subu the lion has died. Can anyone confirm this? I am also awaiting confirmation from the zoo themselves.

Colchester Zoo is very sad to announce that our male African Lion Subu was euthanized and sadly put to sleep on Thursday 1st April. Subu had been examined several days previous to this in order to assess his deteriorating condition, due to his age, after a final veterinary examination and on veterinary advice it was decided that putting him to sleep would be the kindest thing to do for him.
The enclosure at Lion Rock is currently unoccupied during this time.

Subu will be greatly missed by all the staff here at Colchester Zoo.

Aww what a shame but he had a long life and better this way than a few more lonely years without a mate! I always thought he was such a good looking lion!

Quick, get the Gelada baboons in there....;)

I suppose they won't want to be without any Lions for long though.

Subu was a superb looking male lion.
He was one of the last of the orginal Woburn lions, and carried the magnificant mane that was so typical of the group.
He is also the last out of the trio, As his sisters Massing and Ashanti have both been dead for a few years.
With such an increase of lions in the UK I would much rather see this enclosure converted either for the Geleda troop or for a group of non breeding lions.
He lived to a great age, and he will be missed.

I saw him on Saturday looking gorgeous . He was such a magnificent animal .
New to the forum - did the lioness die a while ago? - last saw her there 2008 ??

I always thought he was a particularly good looking lion too, just as you'd imagine a lion to be with a fantastic mane. He also always seemed to be in very good condition ...... other lions I've seen can look a bit 'tatty' if you know what I mean. He provided me with several great (IMO) photos over many visits.

In a way, I'm not so sad he's died. I don't think his enclosure was the best and I don't believe he'd have been indifferent to Leoni's departure. I'd also like to see the geladas in there ........ those of you who know what Ussuri Falls looks like, well, if they built stepped 'cliffs' like that against the back of Lion Rock, I think it'd be more authentic than what they have now.

subu was magnificent and gourgeous. his mane was more spectacular than kabir's from lsp. he was put down so suddenly and he is going to be sadly missed.:(

i would like to see white lions at cz:) (even if they have to travel the world to get here, which im sure they won't because other zoos in europe have them):) because they are so rare and they might be returned to the wild like any future amur leopard cubs might be.:)

Ooh, you should've kept you're tounge bitten on that if you're saying something like that here. ;)

Sad to hear, sounds like he was a really impressive character. :(

Why the heck are you bringing Kabir into this? He was a barbary lion. Not an african like Subu.

White lions will never be returned to the wild. There's too much of a threat from pocahers for them to be able to live safely and zoo's need the space to focus on breeding more endangered big cats such as the Amur Leopard and Asiatic Lions. White lions are a genetic mutation not a seperete sub-species of lion.

I know it's trawling old ground, but aren't all the White Lions a defined subspecies Panthera leo krugeri? Whereas most of the other 'African' lions are a zoomix?

DISCLAIMER: I do not endorse the inbreeding of white lions and don't have an opinion either way on whether Colchester should or should not get them
