I thought id setup a new thread for visits as the other one is getting rather large. And im going to be visiting today and on the 31st as well as in August. Anyway is there anything anybody would like me to find out today? Any pics etc?

Just a few things to note from today, work is taking place on the Tiger enclosure the tigers are being kept inside and the glass window has been covered up looking into the house. Elephant calf was outside for most of the day but is being very closely followed by Thi & Sithami with Sundara. Red Panda Cub is doing well and seems to be getting bigger still no sign of it outside today but did manage to see it on the camera.

I think there probably getting rid of some of the vegetation and possibly relanscaping part of it as there was a digger in the enclosure yesterday and several keepers with chain saws.

Not too much to report today, Nayan the Elephant is doing well (was playing with Sundara this morning). I think there might have been another litter of Meerkats as well.

I went Friday and noticed a few things.

In tropical realm there is concrete foundations under opposite the hornbills. Ay ideas as to what is going here?

Also I didnt get to see the tigers as they were locked indoors while new feeding posts and some other maintenance was being done. The path from around the house was closed off so couldnt view them indoors.

Was really annoyed because the Giraffe/Okapi house was closed due to there being 'a problem with one of the okapis'. Couldnt find a keeper after they had all rushed into the house, any ideas what had happened? I know they are doing introductions with the okapi. So because of the house being shut, I missed the duikers :(

I failed to see the bears either and was wondering for future reference when the best time is to see them?

Oh and I forgot to add that I saw at least two Sitatunga Babies and there is some work being done near Minature Monkeys.

The last feed is usually around 3.45-4.00pm - that's a pretty reliable time.

Doesnt sound good, hope they are ok.

I have a couple of questions im hoping someone in the know can answer:

Whats going on with the Hornbills ?
Writhed: Female is sealed in. Is it known how many chicks this year and how many have they bred total ?
Wrinkled: Female was sealed in but no sign of male, there was what I presume to be a food bowl attached to the nest box
Tarictic: How many breeding pairs do chester have? How many chicks this year and how many total?

Also what was exhibited in the section of Islands In Danger where the Carbibean Iguanas are now kept?

Thanks

Also what was exhibited in the section of Islands In Danger where the Carbibean Iguanas are now kept?

It was originally an additional indoor exhibit for Komodo Dragons; now Chester has moved from keeping 1.2 to 1.1 (adult) dragons it was presumably no longer required and more display space for smaller reptiles was needed with the closure of so many exhibits in the Tropical Realm.

6.4 Tarictis are kept at Chester, with two breeding pairs. The Tropical Realms pair have bred 2.2, thier first breeding. Islands in Danger pair have 5 eggs.

Writhed Hornbills bred at Chester are a female in 2008 and one unsexed chick in 2009.

Tarictics bred at Chester
2001 2.2 hybrid

pure Visayan Tarictics bred
2007 1.0
2008 2.0.1 (1 DNS), these two are next to the birds of paradise
2010 2.2 with one pair nesting

Thanks for such great answers!

Do you know what the Writhed and Wrinkled hornbills currently have in their nests?

Has the zoo ever bred Cinereous Vultures? (it looks like they are sitting).

The vultures have had a number of eggs, none of them fertile. I believe the male at least is quite old which might explain it, but they do make a lovely couple and are always allowed to breed, although usually the egg is replaced with a wooden dummy so that they can continue sitting.

Couple of things from today, all four Cheetahs were in together, I don't know how normal this is but I usually see that the three males are separated from the female. Two keepers were watching them and one was filming them.

No sign of the Duiker today, but on both visits I made then the little off-show area that it has [its bed] was closed off. Only saw one Okapi today (not sure which) but it looked as if it had access to both paddocks (both doors were open).

That was about it. I would love tou know where the other Okapi was if anybody has any info? Thanks :)
