Chester Zoo Patna's woman

When's Patna's mate arriving from Basel?

I was told that she would be coming at the beginning of December, but she's not here yet.

I'm pretty sure this move has been held up by the blue tongue and F&M outbreaks in the autumn. Have patience- she will arrive...

Even when and if she arrives it will take a long time before any prospective union may come to fruition. Baatschi was born 2/9/2004 and is barely 3 years old. She may breed anywhere between 6-8 years of age.

The male Patna was born 21/7/2004 and will not be a confident mature bull before he is 10 years old.

As one can see, Patna is unlikely to be Baatschi's mate.

Or do you mean because the female will be mature and ready to breed before Patna is?... I guess that's it- not relatedness.

I think Patna could still breed before he's mature at say, 10 years- but not sure if that often happens or not?

Pertinax,

I meant your second option. Bull Patna is somewhat unrelated to the Basel female. Allthough both share a San Diego infusion in either. I will check if these overlap or not.

Chances are that a fully mature unrelated bull is needed for Baatschi to breed when she is sexually mature at 6 or so. That would be advisable given the need to quickly build up numbers in the EEP population for the moment.

The Indians will probably still beat the black rhinos to it anyway given the lack of results so far over at the Tsavo

Patience is a virtue when it comes to rhino breeding. The Chester group is fairly young and has plenty of scope and opportunities. There are still several bulls in the 9-12 age class available (between Chester and Port Lympne). Also, Chester now have control of the Black Rhino EEP, so their stock should become even more prominent and is expected also to make a contribution to both the continental EEP population and in situ releases.

Dream on when it comes to Indians. In the UK they still need another 5-8 years before the bulls you have are fully matured and can stand up to the females in the breeding stakes. That is the reality of rhino breeding ......!

Im getting worried about the black rhinos, it just looks embarrasing now. Loads of rhinos kept in the zoo in the past few years and not a calf born in years.

Guys,

Do not despair! As I said rhino breeding and pair composition is a slow learning process. It will happen .. I am sure, we just need a little more patience.

And it would help if you all read the posts in the black rhino thread sometime ...! All the information you need is there! :D

I will be going back in February, so if no news has broken by then, i'll try to find out what's happening...

I may beable to ask sooner, well if the weather isnt too bad i plan to go sunday morning. And i'll try and find out some more information the possible new black rhino

Spoke to a contact of mine at the zoo she should be in the zoo before the end of march as that will get her to the zoo before the midges start biting and blue-tongue is back.

Patna's 'mate'.

I take it that's the new Black rhino you are referring too?

It seems that Indian rhino Pattna's 'woman' might turn out to be a man- or nobody at all at present. According to our rhino expert Jelle, the young female Batschi from Basel is (initially at least), to go to Whipsnade.

Anybody know what the Chester staff say is happening here?

last i heard they were still quite sure she was arriving their as soon they could depending on the blue tongue restrictions

That's what I was told last week. Don't understand it though, other people seem to be importing ungulates from Europe.

The female Baatschi is first set to go to Whipsnade. Probably to sit out her quarantaine there (see remarks in the UK Indian rhino thread).

It is current good practice to first sent sub-adult bulls to collections to set up bachelors groupings. Cows only tend to be given out when almost mature. That policy has however been put aside in the case of bringing Stuttgart's cow Shikari to bull Jacob at Warsaw (both are from 2004).

So, if keepers at Chester still assure you lot that she is coming in March, I guess that may well be correct ...! We will just have to wait and see here!!!

However, to put paid to any hopes you may have of a quick breeding. The bull Patna will not be able to stand up to Baatschii untill he is 8-9 years old (2012-2013). Baatschii will be mature at 5-6 (2009-2010). So, if Chester wants a calf by then, they will still have to bring in a mature bull ..................
