Anne the ex Circus Elephant.

probably more speculation than a likely reality...have longleat even got the required accomodation to hold an elephant anymore?

wasn't the house knocked down and the space used for the netted aviary with the flamingoes and ibis

The Roberts family have confirmed they are looking for a new home for Anne, so we now just have to wait to see where she will go.

BBC News - 'Abused' circus elephant to be rehomed

I also read today about the possibility of her being housed at Longleat for a while, but i wonder too if this is true as i dont know if they have the facilities to house Anne.

Longleat's elephant house is still there, used by the rhinos. I don't know if they moved in after the elephants went or shared it before, so I can't say whether they still have room to spare.
Numerous rumors from the new chief exec's plans for Longleat says he plans to bring back elephants anyway: Purely speculation, but perhaps Anne would be a 'test' before they brought a permanent group in?

I wonder whats best for her, to go somewhere with several eles, or somewhere she can be alone. I know they are herd animals, but shes been alone for along time. I just hope its all a good outcome for her were ever she goes.

Longleat have stated that they may well bring in more ele's for her if it's in her best interests

Longleat still have staff members with elephant experience. Certainly as improvement for her. Good also to see the RSPCA involving ZSL and other 'genuine' experts is making a serious assessment on this animal future welfare. It's sounds as if Longleat may want elephants back and considering it location and space if there is decent investment why not.

Mind you, you can hear the palpable disappointment in the comments for ADI that they are not going to get their hands on her which is also a great relief.

Yes aslong as their is decent investment, Longleat could be a great home for Anne, and other elephants that they may rescue. (If this is the plan). Could this also be a bitter blow for Noahs Ark Zoo Farm, who plan on rescuing Elephants for their Zoo. I know where I would rather see them go, as Longleat have the elephant experience.

Whipsnade has apparently been ruled out due to fears that a herd with young calves could be too much for her.

I was surprised Whipsnade was discussed as a possible home. Integrating this old female with their group would have been a very difficult (or impossible) task.

Longleat does sound a much more suitable option for her. I wonder if their intention is to keep Asian elephants in the future, or maybe companionship would be in the form of Africans if they do bring back elephants at Longleat.

That shouting Brian Blessed man makes me squirm, rather like the 'crocodile man' Steve Irwin used to.

I think the only other Elephant in need of 'rescue' in the UK is the Temple elephant in Wales and they won't part with her. Noah's would have to look outside the UK for any others.

The new zoological director who is a vet with a zoo experience background seems very well qualified if they do get elephants so Longleat would seem to be a good home for Anne.

Yes it was good to see all interested parties discussing this matter like civilised human beings, the result of which would appear to be a satisfactory conclusion for both man and beast, perhaps if Anne's re homing had been arranged nine years ago following the deaths of Janie and Beverley a lot of unpleasantness may not have occurred.

This elephant is to a certain extent forgotten about, perhaps it is because she lives very much behind closed doors and not in public view like Anne, I have no doubt that she is very well cared for, however at the end of the day this is another Asian elephant living on her own, perhaps her owners could consider doing what Bobby and Moira Roberts have done , giving her over to Longleat and therefore providing a companion for Anne.

Confirmed:
Longleat will take delivery of Anne the Asian Elephant within a week. She's already been cleared to travel and work has begun on creating a suitable enviroment for her

Coincidence that it's almost eight years to the day (12 March 2003) since the last Longleat herd of Africans were shipped to Beauval, France. When they left several staff commented that they didn't want to see the park have anymore elephants due to the upset generated over the herd being moved. I wonder how they feel about Anne's imminant arrival?

Longleat's herd were originally brought into the Europe from Africa as babies with the intension of one day breeding them. Come 2002 they were reaching sexual maturity and the Bull, Limbo was becoming more dangerous for the keepers to handle in the full contact program that they were using. They had three choices in the matter

A) Build a proper bull pen and put Limbo in protected contact. At the time they stated that they thought it was against the ethos of safari parks to have one of these pens and keep Limbo in protected contact whilst the females would of still been in full contact

B) Relocate Limbo and just keep the females, possibly sending them away to another zoo for mating when the time was right. But the EEP wouldn't of liked splitting up such a geneticly valuable (all of the herd originate from the wild) group

C) Relocate the whole herd and go out of elephants for the time being. This was the option they took by packing them off to Beauval.

Eight years on and it's been confirmed that two of the females are pregnant by AI using sperm from wild elephants. The calves are due in summer 2012. For this reason and a host of others, relocating them back to Longleat now or in the future wouldn't be in the best interests of Zoo Parc Beauval or the elephants themselves
