Adding to the noctural discussion, what happened to the species in the noctural house near the hall, did they leave the collection or are they off-show?

Most died of old age , the last couple went to retire at Bristol Zoo some time ago.

^so what species did the house contain?, also, why are the anoa back in there old paddock, and not in life in the tree's?

The lemurs kept in that enclosure were Coquerels Mouse Lemurs.
The pair of Anoa are opposite the Kangaroos , the other enclosure houses a single male Anoa.

ahh, thankyou. WHat happened to the Mouse lemur?:/, and thankyou, i just remember seeing the pair of anoa in the other enclosure at one time, (tho, if im honest, im rather dissapointed with the anoa enclosure in life in the tree's :( ), what species did the nocturnal house contain?

No, no. I am talking about the actual nocturnal house they had, after where the tamarins and marmosets are by the hall, after you go through the stone arch. I was just wondering why they shut it?

Its called nightlife in one of my old guide books.

It held Kowari , Spiny Mice, African Pygmy Dormice , Coquerels Mouse Lemurs originally , later held Brush-tailed Possum and various rodents - Jirds etc..
All now gone apart from a few Dormice off-show.

Interesting. Any pictures?. Can't help thiinking that sort of attraction I'd more suited to a city zoo:S, why did marwell close it then?, and what happened to the mouse lemur, because in the book 'marwell, the story so far' it says they were very rare imports at the time (or something like that, I'll dig out my copy later + I will confirm that)

The Kowaris eventually died , the last Mouse Lemurs went to Bristol as I mentioned, all were very old, they were rare and only ones in UK at that time, bred very well at Marwell, came from Duke Primate centre originally.
The enclosures in "Nightlife" were very difficult to service and keep stocked , and rodents have short longevities obviously.
The management did not want to continue with it as it was.

Ahh, thankyou. Why didn't marwell just maintain the mouse lemur in the nocturnal house in the madagascar exhibit until they died?, I do hope marwell go back into mouse lemur tho, thanks for the info:)

Also, does anyone know what happened to the Arabian mountain Gazelle which were kept at the current site of life in the tree's?

A few observations from today's visit to Marwell:

1) The female giant anteater has arrived this week - I was told she is called Inti and came from Denmark. I saw both her and Ernesto in their respective enclosures
2) It looks like the enclosure alongside the secretary birds (currently empty) is being prepared for some inhabitants as there is green netting around the rear fence and some troughs and a small shelter in the enclosure
3) The mara have moved out of the enclosure next to the okapi paddock - this is purely a guess on my part, but I wondered if they were going into the enclosure mentioned above
4) The potto enclosure has now been covered with educational boards (see attached photo)
5) The male cheetah (Turkus) was in the enclosure with the fake rock (and he chose to sit on it) and one of the females (Juba) was in the adjoining enclosure on her own - I believe her sister Suki may have been in the end enclosure (I didn't see her because the fences are blacked-out), as Juba was patrolling the fence line between those two enclosures and appeared to be looking for her

Interesting on the mara, how many does marwell hold because if its a large group I'm not sure that the enclosure you described would fit. Why did they move them out of the paddock by the penguins. Was always quite senic, with both south american species there together;)

May be wrong, but the Arabian Garzelle are now listed as Dorcus Garzelle, and live in the Arid,s land house along with Addax

Ahh, thankyou. So they just got them mixed up?, there never was any arabian gazzelle?

During my first period as a keeper there in the early 80,s they were listed as Arabian Gazzelle, and in thoses days kept in the New Orxy House, this is the house thats now closed to the public opp the tiger,s in those days it also housed, Darma Gazzelle and the first Anoa we had at the park.

There were 'Arabian' gazelle at Marwell - see the photo thread of a 'Thomson's ' ? gazelle at Dudley for recent discussion on the taxonomy of these animals , which were originally imported in small numbers by Chester and Dudley . I think the imported animals came from Aden where they were pets of servicemen . Marwell had a successful breeding group , but these left before the arrival of the Dorcas gazelles .

Affirmative, Aden and N.Yemen. Sadly, that solely British Isles breeding programme was lost and the population was allowed to go more or less extinct.

Totally different ball game than the current N.African dorcas they maintain
