Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2011 #2

There was a baby Tapier born on Monday. I was at the zoo on Tuesday and the staff were very excited about it. There was also baby Pygmy Marmosets born in the last week. Also the female Tiger is responding well to treatment. 3 of the chimps have eye infections that are being treated.

There was also baby Pygmy Marmosets born in the last week.

I suspected this might be coming, as myself and Hel had indeed observed a very pregnant looking pygmy marmoset a few weeks ago.

A drill is mentioned in October births ,is this a second as I thought the first was born some time ago ?

Some news from today's course;

Sad bits first - 1 of the Pygmy Marmoset babies has died. The other is doing well. 1 of the parrots has also died (I think she said thick billed, but I'm not 100%).

Good news - a Guinea Baboon baby has been born.

Other bits - Tigress is still unwell, but no details
A female L'hoest monkey is leaving for another collection as part of the breeding programme.
Kenya and Eve the Hunting Dogs are leaving today. A new pack will arrive in a few week which will either be 3:2 or 2:3 (couldn't recall offhand) to try and have better success with a new pack

Did you happen to hear whether it will be a breeding pack, or a family pack?

Have the previous pair of Wild Dogs (Kenya and Eve) stayed in the UK or gone overseas?

Visit 24.10.11

Just had a short visit with my three under 5 neices in tow today... so didnt get that many pictures but a few things i thought i would mention....

1. The painted dog pair that were there have now left and there are signs up that they are waiting for a new pack to arrive soon.

2. The Drill baby was looking healthy and was moving away from its mother today... the other female was watching intently and the male was also in with them...looked like a lovely family

3. There are a group of gentoo penguins up on big cat row in the enclosure right at the bottome that are in there for prequarrintine before heading off to another collection... there must be about 15 or so of them.

4. The Amur leopards have both been moved down to where the Jaguar was house in big cat row... both were calling to each other today and the female was definately looking very flirty

5. Couldnt see the black jaguar out today...but the two enclosures marked as jaguars... one had camoflage netting over the windows maybe thought it would be for the new female jaguar??

6. Tibor the male sumatran tiger was out but there was no sign of the female tiger... does anyone know if she is still ill??

7. All the chimps looked as if they were now together... i know the last time i hear they still had a few in a seperate group.. are they all together now? the enclosure looked amazing with them all together and excited about being fed... was amazing to watch.

8. I could only see one sealion... i know they recently lost one of the female sealions... is the other one still there? i am unsure if it was the male or female sealion that was lounging on the rock

Thanks for any response... had an enjoyable day and came home with two panda balloons!!... eventho the pandas are not there yet the shop is full of panda stuff!

I noticed that only the male was in evidence a month ago. Never heard whether the second female had been moved offshow, or died, or moved to a new collection.

I think there's just over 20 in there. Apparently they're going to a zoo in China (I can only assume it's tied up with the Giant Panda deal in some way).

Hopefully the other female will soon breed also- they are two sisters of roughly similar age(from Columbus, USA).

The trio of drills birthdates are as follows:

Ilembo (m) born 24/01/00 at Barcelona zoo to Inga and Congo.

Eschu (f) born 03/05/01 at Zoo Atlanta to Inge and Adonis

Nora (f) born 31/12/96 at Zoo Atlanta to Inge and Adonis.

There's a bigger gap in their ages(10 & 15) plus both are older, than I thought. I wonder which one has the baby- the 15 year old might be a bit old to breed now if she hasn't previously.

The second female, Miranda, died a few weeks back. She had been ill but it was fairly sudden.
