Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo? - 2012

If you go to the "Everyone (Most Recent)" tab and scroll down you will find the post. Someone had asked about the plans for Africa, and the zoo responded with this, "wild dogs are still in the plans. I'm not sure about the kopje, I know there will be lots of species of birds."

The 137-year-old Reptile House will be undergoing a major renovation. Some noticeable changes will include a new red roof (the original color of the roof), new energy efficient windows, as well as a new Galapagos Giant Tortoise exhibit along the outside of the building which will open this summer. The aesthetics of the building will be maintained, and the foundations will be reinforced to ensure that the building is still standing in another 137 years. The Reptile House will remain open throughout the renovation process.

Really? A Volkswagen? Oh well, very exciting that there will be an outdoor Reptile House exhibit.

It appears that Thane Maynard has confused Chelonoidis nigra with Colossochelys atlas ;)

I am also glad that there will be an outdoor exhibit at the Reptile House, but I would have really liked to see an outdoor exhibit for the Chinese Alligators along with the renovation.

I will be making a trip to the zoo either this weekend or next if all goes well. It will be nice to go back and see how everything is coming along with construction.

Unfortunately my plans for a visit today fell through. Hopefully I'll make it to the zoo next weekend.

I was searching around on ISIS today, and I found that the zoo is listed as having three female Northern Red-sided Opossums. The zoo is not up-to-date on ISIS, but to my knowledge they've never been on exhibit....

I wonder where they would go. The only place I can think of is Night Hunters.

That's very exciting news. I'm looking forward to the possibility of the pitter-patter of little aye-aye feet :-)

Now for some news that I've heard through the grapevine. Apparently an undisclosed species of primate escaped from its enclosure at the zoo yesterday, but all of the animals involved were quickly recovered.

Oh wow. Exactly where did you hear it? Many of the primates were off exhibit. The only ones that were out were the gibbons in Gibbon Islands, snow monkeys, and the lion-tailed macaques, and of the course the gorillas but, that would be almost impossible for them.

CINCINNATI (February 27, 2012) – The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is home to the oldest Zoo building in the country, the Reptile House. The 137 year old building, which has been home to primates and reptiles, is currently undergoing major external upgrades to the roof, mortars, windows and vents. These renovations will maintain the aesthetic appeal of the national historic landmark and will ensure that the building’s foundation is solid enough to keep it running for another century. (The building will also undergo interior renovations next winter 2013.)
The exterior renovations are scheduled to be complete in May 2012, just in time for the Zoo’s summer season!
Among the noticeable changes, the iconic roof will be painted its original color – red. And the deteriorating mortar around the building will be replaced. Additionally, the vents at the top of the building will all be replaced. The Reptile House will remain open during the renovations to the exterior, but will be closed during the interior renovations during the winter of 2013.
All renovations are being made possible through a matching grant of $408,886 awarded in 2011 from the Department of Interior, National Park Service’s (NPS) Save America’s Treasures (SAT) grant program. SAT grants, made by NPS in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), help preserve our nation’s most significant and endangered cultural and historic treasures
With the funds, organizations and agencies conserve U.S. cultural and historic treasures considered to be of national significance. The Zoo’s grant was one of 61 awarded nationally and the only one awarded in Ohio for 2011. Collectively, Save America’s Treasures projects tell our nation’s story and ensure that this priceless legacy is passed on to future generations.

"These Save America's Treasures grants will preserve the physical fabric of our history and the rich diversity of America's story, as told by its artists, scholars, and other notable figures. These awards also honor the hundreds of volunteers, organizations, and communities whose energy and investment are ensuring that this national legacy endures for generations to come," said First Lady Michelle Obama.
“The Reptile House is one of Cincinnati’s most recognizable and iconic buildings,” said Thane Maynard, Executive Director of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. “We take pride in the fact that so many people cherish it for what it is – a historic landmark that needs to be treasured, tended to and maintained. And that is exactly what this grant allows us to do.”
The Reptile House is the nation’s oldest Zoo building, built in 1875. The Cincinnati Zoo was declared a national landmark in 1987 due to its unique architecture in the Elephant and Reptile Houses. The Reptile House is home to hundreds of rare reptiles including lizards, snakes, crocodilians and turtles.

Press release on the renovations of the Reptile House. I'm interested to see what exactly they will do with the renovation of the indoors.

Whoa, thanks for posting. In other very exciting news the zoo will get Chattanooga's 14 month old female snow leopard, Renji this March in hopes of breeding with Nudo, our 10 month old male (when did we get a very young snow leopard?).

That is exciting news! I'm glad to see that the zoo is obtaining a breeding pair for the new exhibit, however I do not know when the zoo obtained the young male.

I was wondering if you were going to the zoo anytime zoo like you said? I would be very excited to see your new photos especially since you haven't posted in awhile:)

I was planning on it, but I have found myself having too many other things to do. Hopefully I'll be able to make my way to the zoo sometime soon.

There are four new baby African Pygmy Hedgehogs in the Nursery. The zoo is accepting name suggestions on Twitter.

When will the new reptile house be finished? And I hope there's plans on putting the chinese giant salamander back on exhibit :) even thou it is a amphibian. And also getting new species of reptiles. Thks
