Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2012 #2

There's always a realist somewhere* to spoil the legend:D.

yes, its a nice idea;)- but they could hardly gloss over the fact of having such an incredibly long-lived Penguin- so I guess people must be generally aware its not the same original bird?

A white-faced saki was born on the 28th February. Also amongest the new arrivals are four Agouti (sub-species unknown, presumably Central American) they are in the Brilliant Birds exhibit at the moment.

Managed to get to the zoo yesterday after a change of plans (didn't find any keepers to ask nosy questions about penguins though, was a short visit). Noted a few changes from when I was last there-as Jordan-Jaguar says Agouti are now in a corner of Brilliant birds (under where a nicobar is nesting), no signs up yet. A green wing dove was on sitting on a nest too.

Meerkats are in quarantine in the marbled polecat exhibit next to aardwolf (which I finally managed to see yay). They were locked in yesterday but pretty active, couldn't get pictures as my camera couldn't cope with the little viewing holes. Towards closing time they were all snuggled on top of each other right by the window. Marbled polecats have been moved to an exhibit I had never spotted before (unless they were some there all along?) which I can't entirely remember where it was sorry-I think it was near the childrens adventure playground, and we could only see the inside area but there was an outdoor area, we just couldn't get to it (although we didn't try too hard so may have just missed it).

The new jaguar was looking stunning, quite active and growling as keepers went passed. She had a lot of viewers getting excited about the heart shape marking on her side.

Penguins- all still there, but 24 (yes we counted) gentoos have been separated into the smaller pool area-presumably these are the 12 pairs they are keeping. In the main pool we saw a fair bit of courtship behaviour going on, particularly amongst the rockhoppers-lots of allo-grooming and even a couple of (unsuccessful) mating attempts.

The waterfowl area was open to walk in (only the lower pond) with the cranes, stork etc moved over from the nearby enclosure.

Finally, does anyone know how the lemur enclosure works in terms of whether they let them out together or not? They have all moved enclosures (inside) since I last paid full attention to them so yesterday the red-bellied lemur was in the separate indoor area and had access to the small outdoor cage, the black lemurs had access to the main outdoor area and the back section of the main indoor area and the mongoose lemurs seemed to only have the front section of the main indoor area. So does this mean they have to alternate outdoor access and keep the species separate? Previously, I have seen the mongoose and the red-bellied together in the main indoor/outdoor area, and the black lemurs in the separate indoor/outdoor area. I ask because we looked at the lemurs right when we got to the zoo (admittedly this was after midday) and as we left just after closing time and the mongoose lemurs were shut in both times to what seems like quite a small space so I was wondering if this was a regular occurrence or a one off?

According to Zootierliste Edinburgh has had Azara's Agouti (Dasyprocta azarae - a species, not a subspecies ;) ) since 2008. Have these just been offshow all this time or is Zootierliste in error?

If they'd gone into agoutis new this year I'd have expected them still to go for Azara's, being the 'current' species (the punctata and leporina/aguti animals in Europe seem to be not of the most certain purity to say the least, and prymnolopha and fuliginosa are still only in low numbers).

It's not impossible they've gone into punctata/Central American, but it would surprise me.

EDIT: The zoos' website says the Azara's are mixed with the pudu (http://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/animals/individuals/AzarasAgouti.html), so I guess the question is have they moved the Azara's over or are these new animals?

There was no sign of the 0.2 they originally had in December- saying that there was no signage for them on the Pudu enclosure.

They have been split between the two enclosures all along I believe.

They've hopped from enclosure to enclosure over the past few years - I've definitely seen them at Edinburgh before. Think at one point they might have been in the Monkey House!

Pandas

The zoos face book page this morning is reporting that sweetie is now in her pool. This is a key sign that she is about to ovulate. Exciting news!

Other news is that Tibor the Sumatran tiger's sister, Chandra, who he came with to Edinburgh Zoo and she was sent to another zoo when she because sexually mature, has recently became a mum for the first time!.... its about time Tibor became i dad i reckon!...lol. Going to the members talk on Wednesday... anyone else going?

Went to the zoo on Saturday, primarily to see the Meerkats - there has been a switch of enclosure with the Dwarf Mongooses, who are now in the small carnivore house and the meerkats in the indoor enclosure in the Hippo house (In spite of the leaflet handed out at the entrance saying they were in the SCH). Couldn't find where the Marbled Polecats are now - can anyone point me in the right direction?

Also saw a Souslik, for the first time (in about 20 visits!) - much smaller than I expected.

It was just a quick visit, so we toured round the favourites (Just my son and I, so he could happily ignore the favourites of his sister & mum!!) - Both Amur Leopards were active, and further up the hill Mowgli was calling to the female jaguar. Tibor was also active, but the female Tiger was sleeping in the small enclosure. Golden Cats were their usual elusive selves!!

Penguins seemed content in their temporary enclosures - especially the rockhoppers, where pairing/mating behaviour was observered. I wonder if they are happier in the covered/enclosed area than they were in either of the 'big' ponds.

Ravens and Vultures have swapped enclosures since we last saw them, with much activity and stick carrying/pairing activity in the raven enclosure (One feeding the other) so they seem happy.

Two of the Painted dogs were outside, and the internal enclosure was completely curtained off whilst the new females settle in.

1 new arrival not on the board - the Moorhens in the duck ponds have a brood of 4 chicks!!

Finally a question for old timers - what was in the area between the Anteater and Mned Wolf enclosures at the top of the hill - I'd never noticed it before, but there is a gate and the remains of a wall/fence along with a concrete floor up there.

I believe the male Sumatran tiger is Tibor not Chandra. ;)- Chandra is his sister, the female is Baginda. I believe the polecats are now near the Brilliant Bird exhibit.

Is Yang Guang ready to ovulate too since he has been in his pool aswell? I appreciate that the keepers have been warned that Tian Tian may bathe as her body is preparing to ovulate but surely given the hot weather that is a more obvious reason for her bathing, especially given the fact that Yang Guang has also been making use of his pool.
