Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo New Animals, Departures and Deaths 2012

When I talked to a keeper last year he said one male two females. However ISIS shows the zoo with 2 females.

The Wilds has 1.1 Dholes as far as i know and i remember reading that they were brother and sister. Im wondering if they got there dholes from the toronto zoo. I also know that minnesota zoo has dholes on exhibit now and SD-WAP has dholes but there off display. i still havent seen this beautiful animal and i hoping the wilds still has them on display so i can see them :)

Well unless a new male was imported into Toronto Zoo from overseas, this would be basically impossible and very unlikely. Most dholes in North America are descended from Toronto's animals

Updates from the zoo today:
- Vitali (male amur tiger) will be moving to the Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina as soon as the permits are approved
- golden lion tamarin born March 20
- 2 male bactrian camels born (about 10 days ago and on Good Friday)

Wasn't Vitali brought to the zoo for breeding? Why are they moving him out?
Is it because they are renovating the enclosure for pandas?

Since the siberian tiger exhibit will be the future home of the giant pandas in 2013, our female siberian tiger "Tatiana" will be moving down to the Sumatran Tiger enclosure in Indomalaya.

The sumatran tiger exhibit's maximum capacity is about 4 adult animals, so there just would'nt be the space to have the zoo's current sumatran tiger male "Harimau Kayu", along with a breeding pair and possible cubs

Tatiana is also older, and has already contributed to the zoo population with two litters, so there is probably better breeding situations for Vitali elsewhere

We have a new yak on exhibit I believe he is male and is about a year old from Granby Zoo in Quebec.

I went to the zoo today and I saw three capybara babies.

The pamphlet they offer at the zoo also states that the orangutan and hippos will be getting upgraded enclosures in the five year project for the zoo.

This is great. The orangutan's are a large group and they don't all get along so now hopefuly they can let out more groups out at once, hopefuly with some outdoor acess. And the hippos could definatley use a upgrade. The zoo is going to look great in a few years. Well... better then it already does.

I've heard the Guar will be rehomed to make way for the new outdoor Orang-utan exhibit, but we will be gaining two new species, the okapi and the gerenuk! Not sure where they'll be sourced, though.

I'll be sad to see the Gaur go but I'm excited for the arrival of Okapi and Gerenuk!
Also excited for the Orangutans are getting a new exhibit

How would that work though? The orang exhibit is almost the other side of the pavillion. Unless the whole pavillion is getting a redo I don't see how it's going to work. I asume there are no plans out yet?

@Sealife357

The orangutan enclosure could be renovated for another species and a completely new enclosure would be built. I'm sure the zoo will figure out how they could connect indoor enclosures with outdoor. Much like the Red River Hogs, there could be some interconnecting tunnel. I have no idea though

In other news, Chrissy, the tree kangaroo may be carrying a joey in her pouch!

@Meaghan where are your sources from? As sealife said the exhibit is on the other side of the pavilion, from what I understood is that the exhibit will be built between the pedestrian pathway (boardwalk) and the zoomobile bridge not where the Gaurs are located now. I am especially curious to where you heard the generuk from?

@Flixox I truly do not think the zoo will invest to built a completely new exhibit for the orangs, they will probably have the same similar layout in the pavilion when they renovate it in the future. Similar to what they have been doing elsewhere.

@Sealife there are no plans yet, but there is speculation and I would assume the whole pavilion will get a facelift!

As for Chrissie, is this 100% certain and visible?

As for deaths a few days ago Tatiana passed away. She was suffering and had many tumours.

@Quartz92

I was reading the zoo's magazine and it mentioned that they saw Chrissie stuffing her head in her pouch frequently, they aren't 100% sure though.

I heard the news about the Guar and Generuk from Zoos Matter, not sure where the poster got the information from; maybe misinformation though.

Sad news about Tatiana.
