Chester Zoo Chester Zoo updates *3

At Whipsnade the male onager, Touran, was moved down to the onager stables on Monday and was let out with the group on Wednesday so fingers crossed!

Thanks for that Adam. I know ZSL imported Touran (sp?) from Hamburg to breed with their three females. He bred at least once calf (See Whipsnade gallery for GL and Tim May's excellent photos).

I'm not sure too much of the history of the animals, or at least not yet. I'm learning gradually :P Current Asia section is now my speciality haha. I know the most recent foal Ollie is still with the group along with his mother Maddie and the three 'French females' as the keepers always call them. I assume they have names, but I've never heard any mentioned!

So ZSL's 2010/11 calf was 1.0? Maybe he will be moved on this year if ZSL are expecting a new foal. If you could find out the three French females names then I could trace there history in the studbook. :)

I think so. I'm not sure exactly how old Ollie is, but I would assume that he is the most recent to be born, probably last year. I'm not too sure about if he will be moved, don't know if there is much interest in him from other zoos at this point! He is non-breeding, but I think he's on some sort of hormone treatment so maybe that can change if he was needed for breeding somewhere else?

I can ask for you!

As a novice in delving into zoo records, how did you get the studbook for onager? I have seen Marwell's are provided for download online, but what about other species?

Thank you Adam. Could you also ask about breeding, current members of the group and background info on them. Back to Chester news, sorry for ranting over ZSL Whipsnade. ;)

Bornese Orang-utan male "Kevin" (~30) will travel from Berlin Zoo to Chester next spring to breed with "Leia" (16), "Utara" (2) and "Latifah" (3).

Utara is a Sumatran Orang-utan... think you mean Sarikei (who is significantly older than two)

Interesting news BjoernN, thanks for that. :)

Does this mean Chester's current male 'Tuan' will move in the other way to Berlin? Sariekei and Leia are the two daughters of Chester's eldest female, Martha. Sairekei and Leia are half sisters not actual full sisters. One of the females fathers is 'Anak' ex ZSL London.

Interesting news as, afaik, 'Kevin' is the only Bornean Orang at Berlin(all their others being Sumatran) while he is also a wildcaught male with no offspring/representation in the population. There was talk about him coming to Chester previously but the current male 'Tuan' was selected instead.

I also believe 'Kevin' has some problem with his legs/locomotion but presumably this is not genetic and so hopefully it won't prevent breeding.

The name "Utara" comes from a private message from Berlin Zoo. Is there another young bornese orang-utan female beside "Latifah"? I know, "Sarikei" is about 29.

I think they are going to establish a second group, a younger breeding group.

"Kevin" will travel to Chester when the Blackpool orangs are back from Chester.

"Kevin" produced offspring with "Rawit" two times in the late 1990s. Unfortunately both were stillborn, but it shows that he is able to breed. After "Rawit's" death in 2005 he is living alone off show.

Only Iznee, but I thought Iznee was male?

I know about the Blackpool group being moved to Chester whilst Blackpool revamp the current Orang enclosure. Do you know when this move will take place?

The current group at Chester is 2.4;

Males- Tuan and Iznee (Father and son)
Females- Leia, Latifah, Martha and Sariekei

Martha is the grandmother of Iznee and Latifah. I know a while ago there was rumors about Chester bringing Kevin to Chester with the old (Now deceased) female from Dvur (Donna?).

Well I would say lets wait for Chester to confirm this is going to happen, before we all start jumping up and down over it.

Does this mean Chester's current male 'Tuan' will move in the other way to Berlin?

Seems unlikely since Berlin have no other Bornean orangs.

Seems more probable Tuan would either stay at Chester (if they want two males) or go somewhere other than Berlin.

If Blackpool's Orangs are moving temporarily to Chester, there is an opportunity for mating their females with 'Tuan', as their own male 'Ramon' seems no good for breeding.

The new male Giraffe is confirmed as "Doto" from Longleat (ex Woburn) He arrived late yesterday afternoon and is already out in the paddock with the females

Thorn also left yesterday, his loading and journey went very smoothly and he arrived safely at the other end.

Oh good, hope I get to see him tomorrow, see if he's up to scratch :)

And Tuan the man has NO problems in that department! Go Tuan!
