Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo? - 2012

The Bengals & the Zoo teamed up to name our two new Malayan tigers, animals that will be a major highlight of the exhibit. Bengals season ticket holders selected "Who Dey" as one name, and the Zoo's Facebook fans chose "Taj" for the other. Come see them when Cat Canyon opens next week!

...Plus the fact that he said they're the rarest species of rhinoceros...Anyways,

Member Appreciation Night is a week from tonight, and if all goes well I will be attending in order to take advantage of the preview of Cat Canyon. I'm very excited to see how it all has turned out.

I've hear that the Sumatran rhino is the rarest from other places to, but the Javan has near 150 total animals left than the Sumatran. I think I may go as well to the preview, I'm sure it will turn out perfectly.

Edit:
I'm a bit disappointed though that the zoo received 2 tiger males so they cannot breed at the moment. At least Renji and Nudo will breed.

Two greater flamingo chicks hatched two weeks ago. Yesterday was their first day outside.

The Steller's sea eagle chicks are now starting to venture outside of the nest.

1. Guess who got to see Cat Canyon!? :D The snow leopard exhibit is superb. Half of it is all grass and the other half rock, along with Asian highland plants all around. The white tiger exhibit has two viewings and both of them are above. New plants and a pool were added for them. As for the Malayan tigers, you get to of course see them at ground level and it is an amazing exhibit as well. The plan showed that the viewing for the Malayans was going to be in a shelter but actually it isn't. If I had to rate it, it would be a 10/10.
2. There are now boat-billed herons in the South American aviary.

Lucky you :p Friday evening will have to do for me.... It's good to hear that the exhibits have turned out nicely :) I'm very excited to see them for myself. I'm also glad to hear of the addition of boat-billed herons!

That's disappointing, as the underwater viewing area shown in the concept art looked like it would have been superb.

You will be surprised how great it is. Sorry I couldn't take pictures because I don't think I was allowed to. But I did try to take it with one hand and my finger got in the way of all of them:(

Also what I'm not too glad of is that a hill goes downward from the pool, so it doesn't actually look too much like you're face-to-face or ground level.

Too bad. I mean, if there is one inch above the glass level then obviously they did the extra work to make the glass water tight, so why not have more underwater if you already did the work? Of course, if you lay your camera on the glass right on the ground, you might get an interesting split view above/below water.

Before I get to all of the Cat Canyon news, I'll start with a little blog update about the zoo's three miniature pigs:

Now, for Cat Canyon updates:

There was a picture of the viewing window on one of the zoo's blog updates, so I decided to ask what happened to the plans for underwater viewing. This is the answer I received:
Instead of underwater viewing up against the glass, the exhibit designers chose to install a shallow pool just a few feet in from the glass. There will still be a great view of the tigers when they’re in the water.

Here's the new page for Cat Canyon on the zoo's website complete with an overview, cat bios, videos, and information on the zoo's work with tiger conservation.

Cat Canyon Opens June 30 - The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden
CAT CANYON OPENS JUNE 30
JUNE 28, 2012/FRONT NEWS, GENERAL ZOO NEWS/LEAVE A RESPONSE

CINCINNATI – On June 30, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden will open its newest exhibit – Cat Canyon! Originally opened in 1934 as Tiger Grotto, major renovations will allow visitors to see the Zoo’s big cats closer than ever before. One of the highlights will feature a new viewing area offering an opportunity to stand eye-to-eye with Malayan tigers, with just an inch of glass in between.

In addition to Malayan tigers, Cat Canyon will also be home to white tigers and snow leopards in immersive exhibits that showcase the majesty and grace of these amazing cats. With two new viewing areas overlooking three new outdoor exhibits, waterfalls, new rock work, a wooden bridge, eye-to-eye viewing panes and lush play spaces for the animals, this exhibit promises to be exciting for young and old alike.

Linking visitors to Night Hunters, Cat Canyon hopes to provide guests with a new, exciting adventure into the world of the great predators, while strengthening the Zoo’s commitment to the conservation of threatened species through education and scientific research in the wild and at the Zoo. Cat Canyon is presented by The Spaulding Foundation. Generous donations also from the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pichler, Mr. and Mrs. R. Kerry Clark, The H.B., E. W. & F.R. Luther Charitable Foundation, Winfried L. and Emil L. Barrows Fund, John Hauck Foundation and the Dorothy M. Kersten Charitable Trust.

Are there any photos of the snowleopard exhibit? For some reason the tiger exhibits remind me of Busch Garden's exhibits.

While the malayan tigers now have eye level viewing, the white tigers appear to only be visible from above looking down. Not a very good design - you used to be able to see them on the same level across a moat. Now all the views are looking down? I hope I am wrong and there is a lower viewing area, but if not this is a step backwards not an improvement.

That is exactly what I thought even though the format isn't the same at all but the shortness of the grass reminds me of it.

Thanks a ton for posting that Kudu, that's a ton of info, especially for the zoo. Who would've known that they kept Olga this whole time and she gladly can have the new space too.
