I received the Auckland Zoo bulletin today and it claims they are 98% certain Molek is pregnant and due to produce cubs in the next month or so.

Yay! How exciting if alll goes well.

Has there been a tiger birth in Auckland zoo before?, if so Molek is quite old to be a first time mother,

Not of the Sumatran Tiger I dont think. I believe this program has taken ten years of planning to get to this stage, with other Australasian zoos holding Sumatran Tigers in the past taking priority for breeding and other zoos waiting in line to hold this species.
Steve Robinson has posted this info on the Darlings Down thread I think. Its a long wait for Sumatrans as the program aims to slow down generation time by spacing breeding out for as long as possible to minimise inbreeding and consequently gaps are filled quickly.
I may be wrong but I think this is one of the few species for which a CBP demand is outstripping supply, tempting some zoos to jump the gun and acquire cubs through non-recommended pairings. For example, it was roughly ten years between litters for both Taronga and Melbourne with the zoos waiting for well-represented lines like the Taronga Seletan/Shiva line to age before pairing.
in the 1990s this program had space for only about 25 tigers, today the capacity is much greater with Darling Downs wanting in, Orana building its new facilty, Auckland upgrading and of course Australia Zoo and Dreamworld, not to mention large number of recent overseas imports AND the three new Indonesian cubs.

There are no other facilities in New Zeland that have Sumatran tigers right? So in the future it is most likely possible that the cubs will arrive in Australia, unless there have been other plans,

I hope they won't have to go to Zion Wildlife Gardens though,

Orana Park, Hamilton, Wellington and Auckland Zoos all have tigers.

Any offspring will never go to Zion. That's a fact.

Thank you, for that and backing me up, i think, Tigers deserve better!

I went on Friday, no cubs visible as of 4 days ago...

Hopefully this isn't her last litter, Molek is quite old for a first time mother.
I'm pretty sure that there are two cubs born, not only the Auckland zoo website but some other blogs also say this.

The burb fromt he zoo...We have grrrreat news! We are thrilled to confirm that after 10 years of planning and preparation, we have welcomed the arrival of a critically endangered Sumatran tiger cub.

Keepers arrived at work last Thursday (12 June) to the ‘squeaking' of what is thought to be one tiger cub, born in the early hours of the morning. In a case of ‘less is more', mum Molek has been left to bond with her cub in her den. Keepers are yet to get a close look to confirm details, but report that all seems to be going well so far.

Can I ask a question, Glyn,
