Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens LA Zoo News 2012

Is this wombat coming from within the US or from overseas? It seems that it would be possible with Taronga to swap Komodo dragon for wombat or other Australian animals.

Why do people attack this elephant exhibit of all the exhibits in the U.S.?

There are lots of "celebrity" animal rights activists in LA who prefer to harass the zoo rather than figure out how they can actually help elephant conservation and do other useful things that will actually help animals.

It's laughable really. That the activists can claim the Billy is sexually frustrated, when they are the main reason the zoo can not bring in breeding females from elsewhere in the world... To insinuate that the Los Angeles Zoo is incapable of regulating its animal's weights in a 60 million dollar, six acre enclosure is not logical....

14 elephants have died over the last four decades. Yes, but considering the natural lifespan of an elephant is four to five decades, that is not unusual. How many thousands of elephants have died in the wild during that time period? Maybe we should ban wild elephants too!

The thing that I hate most about the animal right groups (not all the groups but the crazy ones that say all zoos are bad) are that they use the worst picture they can find and use it and say all zoos are like this, you never see a photo of a good exhibit in the U.S. (example: showing a picture of the gorilla exhibit at the Buffalo Zoo and saying that congo gorilla forest is just like the picture shown). Why does peta or IDA use a picture from Congo Gorilla Forest or Artic Ring of Life. Also if you watch a video on youtube and read the comments people say "I hate the zoo" what is THE Zoo? People write these thing because these videos show many private zoos and they give the idea all zoos are like this. I support these organizations for closing roadside zoos and fur farms but not when they attack ALL Zoos. I hope that I did not offend anybody on this website.

At least some people really are out there trying to give zoos a good name. This guy works (or worked) at Beardsley apparentely, and he is trying to tell people that zoos aren't so bad, along with many other people out there.

David,
Read the interview in the LA Times with Craig Stanford about chimp behavior. I would disagree with the term dysfunctional.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for pointing out the article: L.A. Zoo should have seen chimpanzee warning signs, critic says - latimes.com

I know that wild chimp troops can undergo "warfare" when they clash and babies can get killed, but I would assume that a captive chimp troop living together wouldn't usually be at war? Of course captivity is un-natural so it may be that wild chimp behavior is not applicable. This is the second baby chimp in a row that has been killed like this, so clearly something isn't working in the LA troop dynamics that propagates "normal" baby-raising behavior (assuming that "normal" for a stable wild chimp troop = "normal" for a zoo chimp troop, which it very well may not).

David, thanks for not taking my comments to heart. Craig is a respected with his regards to primates and their behavior. Every chimp that is in that group were born in captivity. If you can read some of Jane Goodalls publications, or G. Teleki's book on the predatory behavior of chimpanzees you can see that this type of behavior happens. Its unfortunate that its happened here 2 times. There have been many chimps born at the zoo without any problems. In fact the matriarch of this group was born here in 1967. I worked with chimps for several years and I agree that they can be a very nasty species to each other. However, some individuals that I worked with were very nice. All of the staff that works with the chimps have been with them for years and this death is a blow to them. The last one that died was killed by a very young male and I do not believe that it was intentional.

Thanks for the background information on the troop. Whatever caused the male to kill the baby, it is very sad obviously and I know especially for the keepers and zoo staff.

I'm not sure if it was said on here already but where on Earth is Harapan at the zoo?

Harapan is located behind the World of Birds Show in a very shaded area. He is very responsive to his keepers.
