ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade; 2012 and beyond

Nice to see ZSL Whipsnade breeding these again they had a great record with the old trio (?).

They did breed a number of calves from their original Reticulated import, which I believe started as 2.3. However gradual loss of the original adults and the fact nearly all the calves were male meant the group dwindled to just one female and a couple of male youngsters before they brought in new females and a new male.

I think the homebred female 'Savanah' may have been one of the only females produced in the original group.

Thanks Chlidonias. either I missed this or I had forgotten- can't remember which...too much data!;)

I wasn't aware of the third female either then I remembered that it was stated on another thread that ZSL Whipsnade were due to import a pair (1.1) from Europe. I expect the other two females to be breeding shortly too if the new female was successful.

That may have referred to the existing male and the female 'Ina' which they already have? At one stage before they arrived, the only adult they had was the female 'Savanah (+ a couple of young males)

Ina arrived in 2009 from Dvur Kralove, so if the post that Jordan-Jaguar97 mentions was fairly recent (last year) then it would refer to Ijuma (from Hellabrunn, June 2011) and Uno (from Kristiansand, July 2011). Unless they are planning a new import of another pair.

Right, thanks, I have it now. Apologies to Jordan for querying his post.:o

I remember now that the last time I went there they had the new female 'Ina' but not the new bull or the third female. 'Ina' is very tall indeed and has a rather strange lump on her head as if its been damaged in the past.

I don't think they will be bringing in any more.

Couple of things:

Onager- Thank you very much Adam for these birth dates, very helpful for my data. Do you know who Ollie was born to? I know one of the females in this group is expecting twins next year. Do you know which one?

Giraffes- excellent news about another calf however a shame about another male. Do you know how old the current group are? I expect if one female has had a calf then one of the other females is pregnant, probably/possibly 'Savannah'. Do you/anybody know if Ina has ever bred?

No problem! Yep he is the son of Maddie and Touran :) I do but I'm not sure if I can say, it would probably be fine but just to be safe I'll say I can't say!

Unfortunately I don't know anything about the giraffes!

my hubby saw a large lorry going into the zoo this morning with live animal signs on it.
any ideas on what it could be??

Hmm, not aware of any animals going in...

What I can report is that anyone visiting the Asian rhinos will notice that there is a huge crate there as Karamat is now being crate trained for her move to Belgium in a few weeks :)

Could that crate have been what your husband saw kaz?

You might as well say out loud ... the female rhino is due to leave for Planckendael Zoo to form a new breeding pair with their resident male (ex San Diego stock).

Similarly, I expect both Nepali females out with the male soon ...

Thanks, I didn't actually know what zoo she was going to! :p

I think you're probably right, since they are moving the offspring on much quicker this time, the previous female born several years ago only got moved earlier this year!

Lots of activity on twitter trying to get him named Greg, maybe they could get him to officially name him to !

Also saw on their facebook page that they have put up the dates for their "lodge experience" seems like a pretty good way to do both zoos, as you get a day's entry to Whipsnade and London, along with 3 private tours of Whipsnade and dinner, bed and breakfast.

Had a look at trip advisor and it seems to get rave reviews, so thinking of adding it to my christmas list. Has anyone actually done the experience?

Most people rave about the lodge! I think it's probably really good, especially if you go on a lovely sunny day. The sunset on Monday was gorgeous! And waking up on a foggy morning for sunrise would also be beautiful!

There is one exciting piece of news that happened on Friday, but I'll have to give it a few more days to be okay to say it I think. Unless anyone knows? :P
