The plan is to turn the nursery group into an adult group now, so none of them will have to move. It'll save Bryan and Rodders being in the Batchelors.

The plan is to turn the nursery group into an adult group now, so none of them will have to move. It'll save Bryan and Rodders being in the Batchelors.
It's been years since they've had infant chimps brought in, Bryan was the last. I don't imagine they really 'need' a nursery. Having another 'adult' chimp group could maybe allow for more rescues in the future. It will be interesting to see (or hear in my case, I can't very easily visit from Australia!) how the dynamics of Sally's group change as Rodders and Bryan mature.
I don't see how gibbons bred at MW would ever by a high priority for release in Vietnam while there are still gibbons over there in need of rescue.

Yes I suppose it has been a long time since they last had any rescued infant chimps. But surely there could still potentially be infant chimps that could need rescuing and surely if a situation like that should arise surely they would still want a nursery group?
Also Mazfc why wouldn't Brian and Rodders settle in well with the bachelors???

Even if they were to rescue infant chimps sometime in the future, I don't imagine it would be fair to leave Sally and Lulu with no other company 'just in case some other infants need help'. If infants did need rescuing, they may still be able to be introduced into Sally's group, or a new group, or a different rescue centre/sanctuary could provide a home.
It's probably better for the chimps to live in a mixed sex group, so they can enjoy a more natural social setting, though I'm sure the bachelor group are all content with male company.

I think Rodders has bachelor written all through him but a mixed group is probably still a nicer option for him as Soona says, but Bryan was very severly traumatised as a baby and is not without issues still, growing up with Sally and Lulu is a lovely option for him and it's not to say babies couldn't be introduced. I've seen Bryan and Sally behaving together in an adult looking way, (I don't meen mating but grooming, not in a mother/baby way like Sally and Rodders). I'm a bit sad Ash won't be joining Hananya's group as I think she'd fit right in and love all the young folk whereas now she has the older ladies and two laddish lads!
I used to think of the Bachelors as a bit of a last resort until I saw Ben go in there and blossom from a sad little boy not getting on with Hananya in to a big very happy lad. You do wonder if Hananya could see the ambitious chimp Ben appears to be today when possibly humans didn't, but maybe he'd just be like that with any young chap coming in.
I wonder if Sally's group will become the one that they introduce rescued adolescents to in the future, as that seemed to have been the role of Hananya's group for several years. It might be nice for Hananya's community to be able to become settled without more chimps coming in, and develop into a more mature group like Paddy's.
Maybe, it would be great for Ash in particular and I don't think Hananya's house has room for (m)any more!
Will there ever be any more rescue Chimps coming into Monkeyworld? As mentioned above, there have not been any for some years now(when were the last in fact?) They seem to have focused more recently on the Orangutans and Gibbons and their conservation work in S.E. Asia.
Kiki and Bryan were the last ones, I think Kiki has been there around 2.5 yrs. Currently they don't have room really, certainly not to take any males but they have plans for a new complex that will house both orangutans and chimps but not sure when it's likely to happen, it has been mooted for a long time.

I think they'd settle just fine, but I'd prefer to see them in a mixed sex group if possible.

Yes the three spider monkeys are still there.
Thanks. I saw their enclosure when I visited last year but it was unmarked so it may have been before they moved to the park.

I visited Monkey World a couple of years back and loved it. Can't wait to go again!
I'm a bit confused about the classification of the Woolly Monkeys though. I've heard that they are Critically Endangered and there are very few left, and that they are Lagothrix Lagotrichia (Humboldt's Woolly Monkeys). However, on the ICUN Red List that subspecies is only listed as vulnerable. Does anyone know why?

I'm not a woolly monkey expert but I don't think they are a single sub-species, there are brown and grey ones. The single Colombian (I think) woolly monkey died in the last couple of years.
I don't think anyone thinks they would ever be released, there are very small numbers in captivity. In a talk last year Alison Cronin suggested that what is being learned about their husbandry may help with rescue and rehabilitation insitu at some point rather than having a captive population that can have any impact as potential reintroduction animals. (I hope I have represented what she said correctly)

Fantastic news I was quite expecting this to be another birth for Susie what great news! Especially for Cherri as her second baby Pip sadly past away and indeed she and Seamus (her first baby) were both hand reared let's pray this is third time lucky!
As for Susie it has been a few years since Bart was born I wonder if she will have a third baby any time soon or two will leave it at two youngsters in the ageing group

With their birth control failing so often, maybe they should try a different more reliable method. Contraceptive implants are used successfully at Edinburgh, wonder if they have thought of using this method?
