A couple of deductions. My field identifications did not match up with the photo documentation for Trumpeter Swan and Common Grackle.

126 Tree Swallow
127 Bewick's Wren
128 Osprey
129 Great Egret

Spring migrants have started to arrive. I've spent a couple mornings out on the Snake River looking for some new arrivals and attempting again to get a few overwintering rarities.

130 Burrowing Owl
131 Turkey Vulture
132 Virginia Rail
133 Sora
134 Violet-green Swallow
135 American White Pelican
136 American Pipit
137 Swamp Sparrow
138 Sage Thrasher

Those last two were life birds I picked up today. It's not that often that I get lifers close to home, and even less often that I get two of them!

Over the weekend I have been able to add a number of new species:

Birds:
60. Great crested grebe

Mammals:
8. Brown rat
9. Reeve's muntjac deer
10. Common shrew

Went on a field trip to Wicken Fen yesterday and managed to pick up a nice number of new species:

Birds:
61. Eurasian chiffchaff
62. Reed bunting
63. Northern shoveler
64. Meadow pipit

Mammals:
11. Roe deer

Reptiles:
1. Grass snake

Fish:
1. Common rudd

Also heard tons of Cetti's warbler and some sort of amphibian (possibly a common toad) but saw neither.

According to Ebird there have been some reported in your area (Connecticut) in the last month or so.

Excellent! I saw a raptor flying yesterday and the calls were identical to that of the hawk but I wanted to make sure they were still around.

In that case:

Birds
20) Rough-Legged Hawk Buteo lagopus

Spring migration is in full effect. The mecca of the annual North American migration is a small place called High Island, TX. I'm sitting right now in a motel in High Island that has bird posters on every single wall. I did a little birding this afternoon and have picked up a few good year birds, but nothing overly exciting that I could not have gotten back home. I have high hopes for some adventure tomorrow though.

178 Scissor-tailed Flycatcher - Tyrannus forficatus
179 Eastern Kingbird - Tyrannus tyrannus
180 Red-eyed Vireo - Vireo olivaceus
181 Purple Martin - Progne subis
182 Common Gallinule - Gallinula galeata
183 Black-necked Stilt - Himantopus mexicanus
184 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - Polioptila caerulea

Non-bird addition:

Amphibians:

2. Smooth Newt - Lissotriton vulgaris

Some after dinner birding along the Gulf Coast.

185 American Golden-Plover - Pluvialis dominica
186 Piping Plover - Charadrius melodus
187 Western Sandpiper - Calidris mauri

Didn't get any sparrows, but I did get two new birds while birding at the University of California, Riverside Botanic Gardens.

162. Western Tanager
163. Hooded Oriole

Did some after work birding today and I got four new birds:

164. Clay-colored Sparrow
165. Nashville Warbler
* Red-whiskered Bulbul
* Lilac-crowned Parrot

So far I have 5 ABA non countable birds.

This morning, I trekked out to Anahuac NWR in hopes of tracking down Yellow and Black Rails. These are two of the most difficult birds to get in North America. I had high hopes though because there was an expert field hike that almost gauranted to get the Yellow Rail.

Alas, neither species was found. But I did pick up a few year birds and two lifers.

188 Mottled Duck - Anas fulvigula
189 Green Heron - Butorides virescens
190 White-faced Ibis - Plegadis chihi
191 Virginia Rail - Rallus limicola
192 Long-billed Curlew - Numenius americanus

194 Tree Swallow - Tachycineta bicolor
195 Common Yellowthroat - Geothlypis trichas
196 Northern Parula - Setophaga americana
197 Seaside Sparrow - Ammodramus maritimus

I'm now finishing up my trip to High Island and Galveston. I've added 30 year birds and 7 lifers in the past 26 hours. Not too shabby.

198 Louisiana Waterthrush - Parkesia motacilla
199 Hooded Warbler - Setophaga citrina

200 Semipalmated Sandpiper - Calidris pusilla
201 Caspian Tern - Hydroprogne caspia
202 Royal Tern - Thalasseus maximus

To put it in perspective, last year, I hit 208 on September 28th.

You know the stereotype that Aussies have kangaroos in their backyards and ride them to school? Well, although I never rode them to school, I did see a family of 4 Eastern Grey kangaroos from my front window over the weekend. This is always a treat, given that I live in suburbia just 30mins from the city centre.
